Volkswagen Chairman Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn has revealed some new details about the company's future product lineup.
Speaking at the Vienna Motor Symposium, Winterkorn confirmed the company is working on a high-performance diesel engine that will produce 136 HP (100 kW) per liter. The executive also acknowledged the development of a 10-speed dual-clutch transmission that will offer improved fuel efficiency.
There's no word on when they will arrive, but the executive also discussed plans to refine their petrol and diesel engines. As he explained, “Since the year 2000, we’ve reduced the fuel consumption of our TDI and TSI engines by more than 30 percent. I’m convinced that by 2020 we can achieve further increases in efficiency of around 15 percent."
Winterkorn also see natural gas engines playing a larger role in future products because the "technology is fully developed" and CNG vehicles are "environmentally friendly, economical and suitable for everyday use."
Lastly, the executive confirmed plans to "electrify all vehicle classes" to improve fuel efficiency. In the short term, Volkswagen will focus on plug-in hybrid technology. The Audi A3 e-tron and Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid will go on sale shortly and be followed by plug-in hybrid variants of the Golf, Passat, Audi A6 and Porsche Cayenne.

And we thought 9 speed automatics was a gear too far we have chat that 10 speed is on the horizon and not only that but they are going to bring us a diesel capable of 136hp/L.

Never a dull moment in the automotive industry.

You kidding me ? Even if you google exactly "CVT sucks", you will find people telling you why.

Just because of sound. People are so hard to please. Sequential is to agreesive, CVT is too smooth. IMO DCT is a bad compromise of neither this nor that. I guess I'm in the minority.

I can understand why CVT isn't perfect or that reliable but IVT is designed to cope with huge amounts of torque.

P.S.
Shocked no one is commenting on the 136hp/L diesel.

There is no data about how unreliable the lastest CVT's are. I think it is one of the best transmissions for non performance cars and for those who don't "need" a clutch pedal. It is a light and very efficient transmission. The sound? It is no worse than automatic, and DCT, with exception of the latest 911 T3, doesn't sound any good either.

^As far as i'm aware traditional CVT use a belt or chain method so torque capabilities aren't particularly great unlike IVT which uses discs and oil to creat the friction, its torque capabilities is vast by all accounts.

Like any technology, there are good and bad examples of the breed. The Korean's efforts with DCTs fall short of those of the Germans, Japanese auto-boxes aren't as sophisticated as ZF's bar-raising 8 speeder and a number of German manual gearboxes can't hold a candle to the mechanical precision of a good Jap manual.

Similarly, there are fine and poor examples of CVTs... the Mitsubishi ASX's CVT coupled with NA 2.0i engine just has the most anodyne drone and complete lack of driver appeal. [Shudder] Subaru's new Lineatronic CVT in Legacy 2.0T DIT and Forester XT is not only smooth and incisive, it also is much more refined in terms of acoustics and rev-to-torque-demand matching. Did y'all see the terrific Subaru vids that Sunny posted up in the Tech-talk forum? Lineatronic is a high-torque CVT capable of handling more than the 400 Nm of the FA20 DIT.

It's all about fit-for-purpose in my opinion. The last thing you'd want in a Ferrari or a Porsche sportscar is a CVT, and, you'd never want to see a DCT box in a multi-purpose SUV.

In my opinion, the best transmission in the world right now is that ZF 8 speed auto for its tremendously good operation and ubiquity of application. I bet it's also the most reliable in the long term too.
