Upgrading 1989 Porsche 930 RUF BTR Conversion

I don't know what the weight is yet, lots of things came out with the rebuild and some others went in again. The G64/51 gearbox is definitely heavier than by G50 was. Once the gearbox and suspension work has been completed and I have my car again I'll find a scale to weigh it.

Man, I can't believe I missed this for so long! What an awesome project. It's like my model car forum, only with real results, haha.
Thanks zetableh:t-cheers:
Since you brought the thread back to life I might as well give the interim progress report on the G64/51 (from a 993TT) 6 speed installation:

For installing the bigger 6 speed gearbox some fabrication work was required. The torque bar (containing the torsion bars) in the 930 is in the way of installing the larger 6 speed and had to be cut a little. That means the Torsion bars needed to come out and therefore new coil over suspension is a pre-requisite for this transmission swap. I had full RSR suspension fitted in my car. That happened pretty quick, just a couple of days and that was done.
The fabrication for the mount for the new gearbox took a little longer but that's also done now and all painted nice and black like the rest of the car.

I also had SpeedWerks change the diff in the gearbox to a torque biased Guard unit. The last thing we are doing before putting the georbox in is change some gaskets in the box to ensure that the box is as good as new with no oil leaks etc. Here's a couple of pictures of the suspension and the gearbox. BTW, I just delivered a nice shiny RUF 6 speed shift knob to SpeedWerks yesterday. Once it's all back together again I may post another pic of the final product, although I don't know if that's really going to work out too well because when the parts are in, they obviously aren't so visible anymore.:D

Here you can see the code of the transmission: G64/51 - the one used in 993TT cars:

The rear RSR coilovers:

Here you can see the spring is rated at 550:

And one of the front ones:

You may have noticed the two ring like parts at the bottom end of the coils. The lowering of ride height happens simply by just turning those rings. Could not get much simpler:) I think even I could turn those things:cool:

Hi there, i just got myself a 1982 930 Turbo. this is my first classic car and i found your page extremely helpful and trying to duplicate what you have done. However, the car failed on my the first few hours i got it. First was the sitting traffic (later i realised that the air intake tubes are bent so overheated -which is very unusual in the UK -cuz its always cold here.) which caused the engine oil leaking all over the back of the car, then 2 hours later after the car cooled and able to start the starter motor and starter gear was gone! after taking the engine off i realised that turbo is gone! However, it was your post that has made me decide to keep this car and restore it to top condition

Just wondering if you can let me know where you got the diverter valve from and which one i will need? any suggestions on where i can get the K27 HFS turbo and the Tial 46MM waste gate? i will start with those upgrades first. Thanks alot

Hi Eddie,

Congratulations on your new car! Your experiences remind me of some of my early experiences as well :) When you say that the turbo was gone, I assume destroyed? These cars are worth keeping although they can end up being very expensive equaling in price with latest GT3, GT3,Turbo - models or even more depending on what you end up doing to it. But there is nothing to match the experience of driving one of these cars. Definitely all worth it.

Well, my mechanic told me that the turbo pins has too much movement and it is beyond rebuild (probably has been rebuilt before) so its better to get a new turbo. Any suggestions on which diverter valve i should purchase and where i should get them from?

I got the diverter valve from Chris Carrol of TurboKraft in Arizona. The K27 HFS came from Kevin at Ultimate Motor Werks in Seattle. Since you are in the UK I would call a guy by the name of Jonathan (don't remember the last name). I believe his business telephone number is 0118 940 4583 (I got it from his profile JBL930 on Pelican). He has done an awful lot to his car including replacing the 930 engine with a a 993TT engine and is supremely knowledgeable about the UK wrenches.
Although you have already decided on the K27 and the diverter valve (both assume sticking with CIS - if not, then other plans needed), talking to Jonathan about your plans would not hurt. This might be the most practical approach. Of course I will be happy to discuss anything as well. If you get a hold of him and he wonders who the heck referred you to him you can tell him Olli. I only know him through these forums and he may remember me from 5 years ago:) Let me know if you need help in getting in touch with him. And of course, please keep us posted about your progress.

Sorry, you asked about the Tial (it's past my bed time), not the diverter valve. I got the Tial from Imagine Auto which no longer exists. You can order it directly from Tial if you don't have a distributor near where you live.

Thank you so much for your help! I will keep everyone posted regarding the process of the upgrade. Without realising its 4am in UK and I better get some sleep as well

Understood. Turbos are actually like tires, they wear off. Should just take a lot longer to wear off than tires. Was yours a 3LDZ? For the turbo go to ultimatemotorwerks website. Kevin does good work. There's also another guy in high esteem selling upgraded K27 turbos among headers etc. First name Brian and again don't remember his last name. You can google rarlyl8 and you'll find him. Once you start getting into these suppliers you'll discover why some are trustworthy. I have no association with these guys other than knowing and dealing with them at the time of my project. K27s are only good to a certain amount of power, after that you need something else, Garretts being one option. But the best bet is to call Jonathan first. He has gone through so much that he will not only be able to give you good advise but also save you a whole lot of money by pointing you to a wrench in your area who actually does good work. About the diverter valve, Chris at TurboKraft got the whole kit for me at a very low cost. It was billet but not sure who actually manufactured it. You can of course get name brand blow off valves like from Tial. In that case you could match the colors nicely too:) But call Jonathan before actually spending any money.

Hi,

Jonathan have disappeared after attempting to find him and he has changed his business tel as well. I have discovered some serious faults with this car i have got and I have decided to spend the minimum possible just to get it running but save the money for next project. I was told by Jonathan (very enthusiastic guy and given me so much advice) that K27HFS will require a lot of upgrades at the sametime, so do you have any other turbos to recommend? If i go for the non HFS K27 turbo will i still need to upgrade the other parts? my email is Eddietsuihk@hotmail.com. Thank you very much for your help!
