TT Twincharger engine for the new TTS?

Autoscoops reports that new TTS mightl have a 2.5 TSI engine (Twincharger - like in new Golf GT) with quattro and 350 hp.

Not really big on 5 cylinder cars... hopefully it will be reliable. Would it have been hard to keep a six cylinder with TT?

TT already has a V6 in the 3.2 lt model. The advantage of the 5 Cyl will be significanlty less weight than a V6 engine.
There is always the 3.6 lt V6 from the new VW Passat they could use.That engine makes 280 hp in Passat.

I'm of the personal opinion the a narrow angle V6 is overall the more compact layout compared with the 2 cylinder wider (transversly mounted) 5 cylinder mill.

Hey, imagine if the complexity of the twincharging system is such that VW can only use it viably in in-line applications because the design isn't suited to V layout engines! Watcha think Yannis?

Twincharger=Kompressor and Turbo together.

VW is the first company in the world to make a mass production twincharger engine combined with direct injection. It is used in new Golf GT which has a 1.4 lt Twincharger engine producing 170 hp.

As for the complication of the engine , i imagine it's not more complicated than the new double stage turbo diesel engine by BMW.

BTW Volvo already uses a 5 cyl Turbo engine in S60 and XC90 and also Audi used a 5 cyl engine in the past too.

Yannis, it's MUCH more complicated when you consider the layout of a V6.
The twincharger layout is this: in-line engine flanked by turbo on exhaust manifold side and supercharger on the other side complete with all the plumbing.

With the 3.0 litre twin turbo engine in the beemer the cylinder arrangement is still in-line, so the turbochargers in series sub-assembly is only on the exhaust side.

With a V6 you have two exhaust manifolds one on either side of the engine with very little free space in the middle. So, either you're running two turbo's either side or you're running one from both banks which complicates the exhaust manifolding. Add one or two superchargers and you've got a complicated network of induction and exhaust piping I'd say.

It is also possible on a VR6 engine i think but i'm not sure because of the absent of FSI.

Great diagram Iceman. It closely resembles that of the Golf 1.4 Twincharger that did the rounds over Frankfurt. I must ask, is this diagram official Audi material? If so, is that figure for 348 bhp legit?

Whatever the case, I think that this engine will prove reliable because it's been overengineered by the company that does overengineering best. I read a recent review on the Golf GT, and not only was the engine said to be a real performer, but it's also quiet fuel efficent. If this spoken engine configuration is to be in the new TT, I'll buy it!
