Toyota suspends sales of 8 models in recall

GM, Ford, Hyundai and Honda have all thrown stones now....lol. They're openly courting would-be Toyota buyers.

M

And rightly so.
The big take away from this is how you respond in a moment of crisis like this.
I am sure Toyota will lose some market share in the short term, however I do see the becoming stronger on the long run

The 911 call came at 6:35 p.m. on Aug. 28 from a car that was speeding out of control on Highway 125 near San Diego.
The caller, a male voice, was panic-stricken: “We’re in a Lexus ... we’re going north on 125 and our accelerator is stuck ... we’re in trouble ... there’s no brakes ... we’re approaching the intersection ... hold on ... hold on and pray ... pray ...”
The call ended with the sound of a crash.
The Lexus ES 350 sedan, made by Toyota, had hit a sport utility vehicle, careened through a fence, rolled over and burst into flames. All four people inside were killed: the driver, Mark Saylor, an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer, and his wife, daughter and brother-in-law.
It was the tragedy that forced Toyota, which had received more than 2,000 complaints of unintended acceleration, to step up its own inquiry, after going through multiple government investigations since 2002.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on Wednesday said he wants to talk directly with Toyota Motor Corp
Chief Executive Akio Toyoda about the safety concerns involving Toyota cars and the company's handling of those
issues.
"This is very serious," Mr. LaHood said at a breakfast with reporters in Washington.
"After I talk with him, they'll get it. We're going to keep the pressure on."
Mr. Lahood also advised against driving any cars involved in the Toyota recall until they have been fixed.
"My advice is, if anybody owns one of these vehicles, stop driving it, take it to the Toyota dealer because
they believe they have the fix for it," he said, in response to a congressman's question during a
House appropriations committee hearing.

Appearing before a House Appropriations subcommittee on transportation this morning, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said that Toyota owners should "stop driving" their recalled vehicles until they're fixed.

"We need to fix the problem so people don't have to worry about disengaging the engine or slamming the brakes on or put it in neutral...If anybody owns [one] of these vehicles, stop driving it and take it to a Toyota dealer."

Report: Toyota Prius brakes under investigation by Japanese, U.S. governments

Now the Japanese government has ordered Toyota to investigate the braking system on the 2010 Prius. The U.S. government is also looking into the matter after receiving over 100 complaints about the brakes on the third-generation hybrid. Like most other hybrids, the Prius uses an electro-hydraulic brake system that blends the regenerative and friction braking functions. There have apparently been dozens of complaints in Japan and North America of a momentary loss of braking power at low speeds on slick or bumpy road surfaces.

I think it is a bigger problem than earlier thought.
It seems to be pointing towards serious quality and design problems.
Accelerator problem...
Braking problem...

What next- software problem?

Now, I want to see what their marketing geniuses will think! :D

Oh, the infallible Toyota, this can't be! The make cars so great the Germans can't even imagine...

I'm actually starting to feel sorry for Toyota. We're going to see just how tough they company is and how deep their pockets are. They're paying some dealers 75K to stay open longer. WOW.

Toyota pays dealers up to $75,000 for longer hours

Detroit -- Toyota Motor Corp. is giving U.S. dealers payments of up to $75,000 to help win back customers' trust in the wake of a massive safety recall.

"Within the next several days, you will receive a check from us (no strings attached) with a simple request -- 'do the right thing on behalf of Toyota customers'," Toyota group vice president Bob Carter said in the letter to dealers that was sent late Tuesday and obtained by the Associated Press.

Carter thanks dealers for extending service hours and providing car washes and other services. He also suggested other measures, like additional hires to help with recall repairs, mobile repair services, dedicated recall service lanes and complimentary oil changes.

"Toyota dealers already know the first and most critical step of rebuilding the confidence and trust of Toyota owners is the interaction and service they receive in your dealership," Carter said.

Toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles in the U.S. last month because their accelerator pedals may stick and cause crashes. The automaker is sending parts to repair the pedals this week. Separately, Toyota recalled 5 million vehicles to fix floor mats that could inadvertently trap the accelerator pedals.

Toyota is sending checks this week based on the number of cars each dealer sold last year. Dealers who sold fewer than 500 cars will get $7,500. Dealers who sold more than 4,000 will get $75,000. Toyota has about 1,200 U.S. dealers.

Carter said Toyota is considering other marketing efforts to win back customers' confidence, but he didn't elaborate.

Toyota has halted sales of the eight models involved in the pedal recall. When sales resume, Toyota may have to offer incentives like low-interest financing and rebates to lure customers, said Paul Ballew, a senior vice president at Nationwide Insurance Co. and a former General Motors Corp. sales analyst. Ballew said that would be good news for consumers, since other automakers will have to match those deals.

But Ballew said it's too early to tell what the lasting impact will be on the company and the auto sales market.

"We don't see the deals going away anytime soon," he said.

Toyota is making conflicting claims on runaways, U.S. lawmakers say

WASHINGTON -- Toyota Motor Corp. officials have made different statements publicly and privately
about the causes of unintended acceleration, says the chairman of the House Energy and
Commerce Committee, Henry Waxman.

In a television appearance this week, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A.
President James Lentz said the problem was restricted to two causes: floor mat interference with
the accelerator pedal and a sticky pedal, Waxman noted in a letter yesterday to Lentz.

But in a private Jan. 27 meeting with staff from Waxman's committee,
Toyota officials said the causes of unintended acceleration
are "very, very hard to identify," the letter said.

At this same meeting, Toyota officials said sticking accelerator pedals "are unlikely to be responsible
for the sensational stories of drivers losing control over acceleration
as their cars race to 60 miles per hour or higher," said the letter
from Waxman, a California Democrat, and Rep. Bart Stupak,
D-Mich., head of the oversight subcommittee.

So, the Prius software is a Windows based software?

:D :D

I've bought a black Aygo 1.5 years ago (best car in the world for the 8k you pay for it), but that's one of the models without problems.....

This is getting serious. The worst one in many years. I guess the talk about "Toyota = Quality" is a thing of the past now.
