86 Toyota FT-86 II Concept at Geneva

The Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ are 2+2 sports cars jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru, manufactured at Subaru's Gunma assembly plant.
I really want to like this. I really do, but there's too much Porsche in the greenhouse. It's too rolly-polly for my taste. I thought the first (or was it the second) concept was much better albeit very much GTR-inspired.

I may have to convince myself that I like it, because I do like the idea of a sporty RWD Toyota that's semi-affordable. Let's see what Subie's got in store for us during day #2.

I agree about the flow, there's no flow at all to the design really. The sides look practically upright and slab compared to the heavily sculpted and crazy/aggressive front. The rear also has its own thing going on.

As a serious car, I'd have a lot of criticisms, as a little affordable Toyota, it looks pretty fun so far.

What on earth happened between the first concept and the second? This looks production ready to me, which is sad because Toyota has ruined it. The angular front wheel arch is gone, the simple crisp clean side is gone, replaced with that horrible, large fake side vent. The rear quarter window has a greater downward curvature.

The real problem I have is with the overall profile of the car. The front end section, particularly the distance between the front wheel and the leading edge of the door has been significantly increased, the car looks to have lost its compactness. I have a feeling Toyota has put the front and most of the rear end styling from the first concept onto the body of the Subaru version of the same car.

All of you make very valid points, and I agree whole-heartedly. Eventhough it's supposed to be an attention-grabber and targeted at a more youthful demographic, the design itself is very exaggerated.. kinda like some artist did a swoosh here, and a swash there, and a flick here, and a crease there. Who knows, it might well be perfect for those who its aimed at.

Monster brings forth an excellent point that possibly the more subdued and refined concept (v1.0) shown above in the red, has been reserved for Subaru. One thing I did read in the press releases for this car is that the low-sitting front end could not be maintained due to pedestrian safety regulations, so at least that explains the more upright nose on this v2.0 concept.

Who knows, knowing Toyota, they will probably offer two versions of this car, one with toned-down styling, and the second pushing the visual envelope (ala this second concept).

Also, why make this a 2+2? It's small and that back seat seems useless unless you are a baby.

Many sportscar have the redundant '+2' feature? ...and 95.628% of the time they are exactly that, redundant (well except for throwing crap in the backseat), but whenever Haley's Comet swings by the rear seats might get some action.

I know this, but this is REALLY small. Hell, they could take out the seat, save some extra weight, get it to have better fuel mileage and reap the $$ benefits. :t-hands:

That first concept just wouldn't work in the real world of EU pedestrian impact standards. There is no cushion in the hood and there is nothing over the front wheels.

^^I actually like it. As for the AE86 style of view...lets see. I'll have to wait to drive and see for myself. I've driven my buddy's car so I can actually have a valid opinion. LOL

Toyota FT-86 coupe - full details

Toyota will next year fulfil its promise to the world’s car lovers by recreating a range of affordable, sporty Toyotas that bring fun back to driving with its new Toyota FT-86.

The new coupés are aimed directly at VW’s successful Scirocco – but have several built-in advantages. Toyota insiders say that as well as having rear-wheel drive, which better suits handling adjustability than the Scirocco’s Golf-derived front-wheel drive, their new FT has a considerably lower centre of gravity (even lower than a Porsche Boxster’s) and is around 200kg lighter.

1100 kgs, and lower center of gravity than a Boxster... Color me impressed, if that indeed turns out to be real. :t-hands:

According to Wheels magazine, Toyota US didn't like the first concept, the car appeared too tame and too compact for the US market, so the California design studio re designed the car with more aggressive styling (I will say it is over done) and gave it longer front and rear overhang.

Toyota should really hurry the hell up with this car, are they worried that sports car will inject too much excitement into their current range? It took them 10 years to get the LFA to the market, we don't want to see it repeating for this car.

Monster, I think they're waiting for the new FB20 engine which will likely feature DI to become available first.

Can they just get this car out on the road? Too many gimmicky concept cars.

You should read the AutoCar article that hoffmeister_fan linked to. :usa7uh: They had to make extensive changes to the original concept. But the production model should be presented at the Tokyo Motor Show in December.

Now I understand that it was done to better driver visibility and abide by pedestrian laws, but did they really have to redesign the entire car... especially with that ghastly front bumper?

Under $25k. That would be fantastic. As per the usual discrepancy, that would mean something like €25k here. I wonder if that will happen, could easily turn out to be €35k...
