Guys i think that this is the right time to buy a car. My plans are to replace the Clio, since it is really old and it costs me some serious money. I don't know if the replacement will be a new or a used car, but we will get to it. My plans are to get something as a replacement for the Clio, and in 2-3 years, based on my financial situation, get something to replace the S60.

So to begin with the S60. My thoughts are to sell and buy a 3er coupe. I use it only for journeys and it suits my character very well. Relaxing drive, adequate power. But i got bored of it. I want something more sporty for a change and it's time to get a BMW. Right now i am spending money on my house, so it's not No.1 priority.

To go one, i hit the Clio pretty bad today. The right doors, front and rear suffered some pretty hard damage as i was driving like nuts while looking for some parking space downtown. I braked late and with 50km/h in a really narrow road. So i ended up in a parked Yaris! The car is drivable, only cosmetic damage, which i estimate will take 300-400€ to fix, when the whole car is worth no more than 400-500€. But that's why i keep it. I abuse it without mercy!

My thoughts are to get a used VW Golf 1.4, a used Volvo S40 early 2005 model, or a new VW Polo.

It's no question that it's gonna be german or Volvo. Badget no more than 15000€. Mind that we already have a small car in the family, my wifes 206.

The point of getting a Polo is that it will be small and agile, and the 1.4 80hp version is about 13500€ with more than enough equipment. I will get a new one, since i plan to keep it many many years, just like the Clio. But it will be replaced soon.

On the other hand, i could get a Golf for 15000€. What can i find for this kind of money? Mark IV or maybe MkV? And what engines should i be looking for? I don't want it to be really fast, only enough power for my everyday needs and even better fuel consumption. 11l/100km (21mpg) for a 800kg, 1.4 (78hp) Clio is extremelly unacceptable. I have a heavy foot, but not worth so much fuel. So, a nice Golf in good condition could be a good idea. Practical, not big enough, so that i can park it almost everywhere, economical.

The 3rd scenario that keeps coming to my mind is get a used Volvo S40 1.6. It's a very nice car. But before you crusify me because i already have its bigger brother listen to this: It's supposed to be a medium sized car. Competitor to the VW Golf. Also it has the same character as the S60, relaxing to drive. Yet the 1.6 cannot do miracles, but i don't need to! 5 doors are a must and also a good luggage space. I plan to use it as a family car when i get rid of the S60. A guy who ones one, told me that with normal driving he get's no more than 8 - 8.5 l/100km. So why not? Also, i really love its looks.

What else would you suggest?

I am really looking forward to your suggestions.

Also mind that probably i will get the car in January, so i have only two months to think of it.

Out of your options for the 'smaller' car, I would probably go for the S40. I think its the best looking out the lot, more practical than the Polo and just a bit more exciting than the Golf. And, yeh go for a 3er coupe. Those two sound like an excellent combination to me. But its all down to you in the end!

Here my take

S40: Very sensible choice. Neat design with a size that not too big but neither too small. Great if you want a small but practical. On the other hand it's...................still a Volvo. So in spite the size different between it and the S60, the car still have numb steering and pedals that lack feedback. It's really not a sporty car compared with a Bimmer, Benz or even a VW.

Golf: One of my buddies has a 1.4L Golf that I tried out a few months ago and I was surprised that 1.4l isn't weak at all if the car in question is small. The car feels very light, nimble and pulls quite nicely if you push the pedal to the floor. On the other hand I would opt for 1.6l version for a more effortless power delivery. Suit you more as well since you seem to enjoy relaxed driving. My buddy dad has a 2.0 TSI Jetta that is dead quick, absolutley superb engine but that's too much power for your needs.

My verdict is get a Golf. It's a very popular car in a saturated segment and with the economic slowdown the car manufacturers are facing, you should be able to get a well equipped 6 month old one with DSG and leather upholstery at a very attractive price.

Judging by how you say you (love) driving your Clio, and how you are already getting sick of the S60's "cruisy" nature... I have a feeling if you bought the S40 you'd get the itch for something a bit more exciting?

Anyhow... considered a small diesel hatch? Secondhand 1.9 TDI Golf or some such? Worth a test drive at least :usa7uh:

Diesel is not into consideration given the tax status of the diesels here. The point with the Clio is that it doesn't have electric gas, plus its mechanical steering and only 800kg. So it's very fun. But i have fun only because i don't care if i scratch it and that has made me very irresponsible driver.. So that needs to stop :D

Tomorrow morning i will get some pics of the damage i made.

Thanks for the input.

I agree with Luw. You should get a very nice price on a very nice golf in this market. :usa7uh:

Don't buy the 1.4 Golf , it uses more fuel than the 1.6 FSI.
If you are getting a small engine, you should go for the diesel versions.

The issue here is that the "new" Polo isn't on the marked yet, ...
and don't buy the old one now... DON'T!

Why do you need the car in January ?

I'd say get the NEW Polo

With a diesel engine with commonrail!

Get a new Golf or a new Polo. Unless you can find a good discount on the "old" Golf. The fuel consumption on the 1.4 lt Polo is very good (my wife has one) around 6-7 lt/100 , Golf 1.4 has average consumption of around 1 lt more.

The S40 is starting to look outdated , it's too big for everyday city use (especially for your wife) and also you 'd be better with a new car than a used one (better reliability , warranty ect.).

Tarek: The E92 will come in a few years when i get rid of the S60

DaSilva: About this January issue. It's just about the badget.

Yannis: My wife already has a 206. I will be using the car for my everyday commute. Home downtown and univercity. But i think i will go for the Polo in the end. Small, practical and economical. I think i can get a good deal since it's its last year and i am planning to pay cash!

Thanks again for the input guys!
