Why opel. Can there really be that much cooperation between MB, BMW and Opel.

For similar reasons why Porsche (or Audi) needs VW. Economies of scale. Both BMW and Mercedes need a partner for the lower segment large-scale production models. R&D is extremely expensive but profits per vehicle aren't big. Mini is FWD so BMW can't benefit from sharing platforms with 1-series. Same case with MB's A/B-Class vs. the rest of their lineup.
