Z Series The Next Generation BMW Z4 - Coming in 2018?

The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants. The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.

I will, when the Z4 E89 came out my brother and myself bought one straight away we loved it when we looked at it in a closed room at the Brussels auto show....
I’m really curious if it can charm me...the concept I saw in January was just wonderful I’ll let you guys now if it’s still so cool in pre-production, over the phone they told me I’ll see the real deal only for the interior who will still have some hard plastic parts.
Keep you guys updated....cheers

If they are the same Z4's myself and others have seen? Then they will be fully finished.

You think they'd show potential customers a half finished car
If anything, what they will see is a Z4 with 50k extra options to make it look the best it possibly can.....

Or was this a stealth brag ;) :D

I have the feeling that no option would be able to make the front of the production car look good

The M Packet helps break up the expansive blank spaces of the standard edition. But overly I am impressed with the car even more so than the E89.
Although I still have a soft spot for the E85 to me that's a design that has stood the test of time and is as will be a modern classic.

This car is clearly not a priority for BMW. Current car is almost 10 years old. New one co-developed with Toyota WTF! Just like the poor Mercedes X-Class co-developed with Nissan. Not nearly as good as a less costly Ford Ranger. Premium German brands should move on from low demand models and cancel a model line, or go full-on passionately for development 100% in-house.

I thought there was a difference between co-developing and borrowing a platform, but what do I know?

It's a BMW development, it's a BMW car, BMW engine, BMW chassis , BMW systems, it was developed in BMW FIZ ... Toyota only contributed money for R&D since it will use the car under the Supra skin, and tuned it by themselves, applying their own touches to Supra. Geez, Supra has been tested in BMW testing facilities by mostly BMW stuff.

Supra will be reskinned Z4, not the other way around. BMW went into collaboration with Toyota to share R&D costs, while Toyota is getting a car with BMW dynamics character - since it is a BMW car.

Production of both cars will be outsourced to Magna Styer, Graz, Austria.

Exactly, the Supra/Z4 were co-developed by both Toyota and BMW on what is essentially a bespoke platform with BMW running gear. While the MB took a Nissan Navara and put a veneer of luxury over it. This is apples and oranges.

Is it though? Or is this a variation or CLAR which seems much more likely.

They could have used a modified variation of the i8 carbon tub for the next gen Z4, and make a serious ICE sportscar of it. Way too expensive to sell probably, not to mention likely a huge investment in R&D to make that platform ready for an I6, if even possible in the first place...

Nevertheless, it will be exiting to see the dynamic and sporty capabilities of the new Z4. Hopefully more Boxter than E89 in character, and all signs point that way.

And the folding hardtop obsession in Munich is also over, which is good news too.

My understanding was this was a ground-up exercise, but I'll defer to someone more knowledgeable than I.

Don't get me started with regards to BMW's aversion of tackling a full-on mid-engined sportscar/supercar.
