M5 The New BMW M5 (F90) Driven

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M
Well, can't have it both ways. It's either a BMW with some albeit pedigreed aftermarket modification, thereby rendering Alpina to tuner status, or Alpine is a manufacturer and therefore their cars are not BMWs.
Officially they have the status of producer in Germany and that's why they give the cars an Alpina serial number.

Sure. BMW and Alpina do have a very special relationship. And yes, Bovensiepen is very proud of the "manufacturer" status.
But in my book, they are closer to being a - albeit a very comprehensive - tuner.
They get all of their models built on BMW assembly lines by BMW workers. Alpina specific parts - integrated into BMW logistics - are delivered directly to the assembly line.
Rumour has it, that Alpina is able to require some specific changes in the early project phase even on the body in white regarding mounting points, etc... don't know if its true ... but still - does it make Alpina a manufacturer?

I think reviews are now starting to trickle in for the LCI. Sorry if this is in the wrong thread but it's still a first drive (of a refreshed car) of sorts..

Short snippet..

"Much as they do in an E63, mind. The pair are still incredibly hard to split but the BMW remains the more rounded, comfy car; TV screens for rear passengers are a simple options box tick away. It covers all bases with a staggering depth of engineering and might well be the most complete sports saloon ever. To an enthusiast, though, such completeness can be a help and a hindrance. The Merc is less couth (read: louder), bigger hearted and encourages its driver to be more playful."

Another UK review:

"Ultimately, the LCI model will be very familiar to anyone accustomed to the current M5 Competition's way of doing things. But the final layer of superior polish added by the updates is telling enough to be worth seeking out. Whether or not it changes the status quo in a ridiculously talented segment is hard to say - each contender brings something slightly different to the plush world of scenery-blurring V8 heavyweights - but the idea that this comfier, cleverer BMW might be the most well-rounded flagship is now that much easier to get onboard with."

Verdict

"The new 2020 BMW M5 Competition is still one helluva super-saloon. We already rate the regular M5 very highly and this addition just adds more drama, more finesse, more outright muscle to make it even better. It’s heavy, it’s pricey (just over £100k), but for the discerning few, this makes the maximum M5 even better".

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
