600 (W100) The Grand Mercedes 600 (W100)

The Mercedes-Benz 600 (factory code "W100") is a single-generation line of full-size ultra-luxury limousines and Pullman limousines, made by Daimler-Benz from 1963 through 1981. Nicknamed Der Grosser (Grand/Large Mercedes), succeeded the Type 300d "Adenauer" as the company's flagship model. It was positioned well above the subsequent 300-series in price, amenities, and status. It was mainly used by heads of states and Royalty. When launched in 1963, the Mercedes 600 was the most expensive car in the world. Its few competitors included British and American marques such as Rolls-Royce, Cadillac and Lincoln's top model lines. Though very costly, it's hydraulic mechanisms were ground breaking and has not been seen in any other car to this day. The Mercedes 600 still remains to be a very expensive car to own and maintain even today.

You live in a very nice place, and have three nice cars!

Which would be your most favourite car?

I can only comment on the 300CD and the 993 because the 600 is still in Pennsylvania being restored/refurbished. That said I prefer the 300CD since I don't have to drive it as delicately as the Porsche. I have a Euro (read lowered) suspension on the TT and it is definitely not as forgiving on these San Francisco roads. The car is best on the open road or o the twisties outside the city.

Here is a very nice one that is for sale.

dbtk, your 993 Turbo (in your avatar) is gorgeous -- the 911's just never look bad do they ...:usa7uh:

I can't wait to see pictures of your 600 once it is restored :t-cheers:

It's hard to keep up with all these forums. I wish I had more time. I tend to hang around mbnz.org, rennlist.org and m-100.cc (1985 300 CDT, 1997 993 Turbo, and 1972 600 SWB, repectively).

Sorry for being so inactive here, however, I received a PM from Rob requesting I post some pictures of my W100. You can read my contributions on the above mentioned forums using the same ID: dbtk, if you wish.
Ah...happy to find another Rennlister here....(I am with my real name there)

Nice car, Roberto. As always, I'm not a big fan of those wheels.

The market for late-1980s, early-1990s unique Mercedes cars has really soared in Asia recently. Sellers are getting pretty good prices for the 190E 2.3-16v, 500E W124 and the Evo cars. I think it's because the resale prices for current models, including AMG cars, are so bad. I saw a 2000 AMG E55 selling for $280,000 HK, which it isn't much of a premium on other preowned E-class cars

Roberto, thanks again. Here are some shots of it before restoration. There is not much we are doing other than a rebuild of the front suspension, buff job, woodwork (see photo), and new curtains. It's more of a street restoration or refurb.

Roberto could you please send me some info on where/how can i find someone who has a Mercedes 600 for sale? I would appreciate it if he is located in Europe and could tell me how much is he selling the car for.

PS. My friend has both of the Citroens on that other thread. The DS is now being restored and in 15 days it will be ready. Expect pics! While the SM Opera is located in Athens. I have some great info on both cars!

The 600 is old now but it is still a very noble car. For DaimlerChrysler, the Maybach is supposed to be the 21st century answer to the "Grand Mercedes" ....and it is also an incredible car.

You're right, the 600 is such a noble car. When you look at it compared to the Mercedes of today, there seems to be something...missing. The style has been compromised. Rather than catering to the tastes of the sophisticated upperclass, they're catering to the slovenly, low brow tastes of the nouveau riche rappers and hip hop "artists."

They aren't as cultured anymore *sigh* :(

LOL ...you'll get into trouble around here with comments like that modena_360stradale ....I do agree with you in essence ..but not all nouveau riche rappers have bad taste

.......just most of them :D :D

Well you're probably safe here in the "Older MB's" section ...but you would have been torn apart if you had posted that in the S65 thread ..LOL

I know exactly what you mean.

These pictures have been on my hard-drive for quite some time ...I forgot to post them earlier. This is a very good example. It is a pre-1968 version (it has the old head rests and inside door handles) but the wheel rims have been changed to the post-1968 type - which was the only exterior styling change made to the vehicle in it's 18 year lifespan -- apart from the hood ornament: the pre-1968 models have a slightly larger hood ornament.

Very interesting. I thought it had a V12, but I was wrong. Do you know when Mercedes started building V12 engines? It might be the W140 S600 or 600SEL.

For cars, it was the W140 S-Class (600S).

But MB had built V12's long before: inverted V12's that is. :usa7uh:

You might recognize these from the Messerschmidt BF-109 series fighter aircraft. They employed the DB601 engines early in the war and went through various engine changes throughout it.;)
