W100 The Grand Mercedes 600 (W100)

The Mercedes-Benz 600 (factory code "W100") is a single-generation line of full-size ultra-luxury limousines and Pullman limousines, made by Daimler-Benz from 1963 through 1981. Nicknamed Der Grosser (Grand/Large Mercedes), succeeded the Type 300d "Adenauer" as the company's flagship model. It was positioned well above the subsequent 300-series in price, amenities, and status. It was mainly used by heads of states and Royalty. When launched in 1963, the Mercedes 600 was the most expensive car in the world. Its few competitors included British and American marques such as Rolls-Royce, Cadillac and Lincoln's top model lines. Though very costly, it's hydraulic mechanisms were ground breaking and has not been seen in any other car to this day. The Mercedes 600 still remains to be a very expensive car to own and maintain even today.
Here's the one that was for sale in Hong Kong last year which was restored and modernized by AMG - I really love this one. It is a six door version with the folding seats (some of the six door versions don't have outside door-handles on the middle doors but this one does). I really love these cars but they have to be in good condition - preferably fully restored - but the hydraulics can be troublesome I've heard - which means expen$ive to fix.

BTW cawimmer, Hugh Hefner had a 600 Pullman - since you appear to be following in his footsteps I just thought I would mention that - just kidding:eusa_danc

Here are some pics of the one I photographed in Amerang.

Beautiful. In white too! :eusa_clap

A rare Presidential landaulet ex-Romanian government was listed in auction in Las Vegas at $550,000 U.S. The AMG 600 in Hong Kong that Roberto posted probably sold for at least $4-5 million HK currency. I've seen landaulets seeing for as much as $750,000 U.S. so it fluctuates.

The Coupé.

Here is something intriguing, it has been named "Benzomino" and was designed by Paul Bracq, who was the 600's original designer, for Karl Middelhauve, who is a well known and respected MB restorer in the US - and a leading authority on the W100.

I saw a 600 today in a cream color outside of an ice cream parlour. I didn't even have my grainy camera phone on me otherwise I would post a picture. Anyway, I looked closely at the car and it was in great shape, but the paint was looking a bit faded. The owner caught me looking at his car and asked if I was even alive when the 600 was built. He showed me the interior and it had a glass division in it. He bought the car used in the 1980s, originally based in Vancouver. I've seen pictures of 600s, this was the SWB not the Pullman, with the glass division and the rear seat looked very cramped. How common was the division in the 600?

I have yet to see a W220 or W140 S-class with a division installed. There are a few comparatively short limousines based on the S-Class with the division. Has the S600 Pullman been killed? I'd like to see a S600 Pullman in the new body style. I probably wouldn't like it, but I'd love to see Mercedes make a go of it.

Lucky you 450SEL 6.9, I don't think the division in the SWB version was very common at all - I have only ever seen one with the divider (about 10 years ago)

If Mercedes do decide to build a Pullman version of the W221, I certainly hope it is better than the W220 version. The W221 might prove to be a difficult car for after-market "stretchers" to convert because of the dynamic lines in the body - to keep the body lines flowing smoothly will require a more gradual gradient (or more accurately, a longer curve) because of the increased length of the body - to correct this problem properly would require new body panels - and that does sound expensive.

I don't know where you manage to find all these great pics of old Mercedes, but thanks, Roberto. I remember seeing a picture of a Peugeot with a division and the interior had the leg room of a hatchback as a result of it.

I'd like to see Mercedes build a Pullman themselves. The after-market guys make some ugly limousines with raised roofs and a slightly longer wheelbase. Trasco, er Centigon now, is building a stretched version of the W221 available with a 50 and 135 cm extension. This particular Pullmann (chop) doesn't look so bad.

LOL, 450SEL 6.9 - Ha, I just add them to my collection as I find them.

This is a good picture I think - it is a pre 1969 model (you can tell by the wheel rims)

For anybody who is interested, this is a good website with excellent information about these great vehicles.

I just saw this on the M-100 forum - I find it astouding that someone would do this to what was once such a beautiful car :eusa_doh: :t-hands:

Ugly indeed. It looks like a cross between the 770 Grosser and a 300D Ponton. I really hate those later model rims.

That Pullman limousine looks nice. Is that a 190SL with knockoff Rudge wheels in the background beside the portly lad wearing a vest? It's quite rare for roadsters to have that wheel package. I think a handful of 300SL roadsters were factory-equipped with the Rudge wheel.

Roberto, do you have any pictures of the 1980, 1981 final models of the W100?

Here are some very late model 600's (sorry none from 1981)

Here is something interesting - only one Short wheelbase Landaulet was built - it is unique - I must say, I would love to own it ;)

Beautiful pictures of a beautiful car. Thanks. That SWB landaulet was built for a German aristocrat Mercedes race driver. Of course many of the Formula One, sportscar stars of that era were from prominent European families.

Goodness me! That 600 is armoured! :eusa_pray It looks in perfect condition. I initially didn't seen the line you wrote above the picture of the armoured car, but I thought the window frame and overlap looked thick enough to suggest it was a hard-car. If I ever buy a 600, I'll find a factory armoured SWB with a division. I believe only forty-five factory armoured 600s of all variants were built. You've an incredible collection of pictures or a great ability to find them on the internet, Roberto

These are some interesting photos from a Mercedes brochure from the 1960's

[In the picture above] I love the way the staff have "assembled" to admire their employers new "toy"...LOL - I find this quite fascinating, you woudn't see this kind of photo in a car brochure today - somehow it's just not PC - BTW, why is it, the wealthier people become, the more help they require just to get through their day doing even the most basic tasks - like dressing oneself or opening a car door - LOL

When I look at these old photographs, I realize what a very different world we live in to the one the 600 was designed for - I wonder what 600 buyers would have made of the fully reclining seats in the Maybach 62 - I imagine the idea of lounging about in the back seat of your car would have been considered quite slovenly and uncouth in 1965 - a lady [particularly] of the time would never have allowed herself to be caught in such a compromised position - running the risk of her chauffeur being able to see up her Givenchy skirt through his rear-vision mirror. No, in those days a lady would sit bolt upright - as she was taught at her Swiss finishing school.

wow Roberto that second pic looks just so old world elegance. i agree also that they would not have liked the idea of reclining seats for the reasons you posted along with the technology was not there and it is just not the type of car that would have it. Kinda like hte current rolls that dosent have those seats as the maybach does. its a diferent aruor with these cars
