I would make the poll in reverse - which is the least liked S class. And than I would vote for the pre-FL W220.

I loved the exterior design of the W220. So sleek, so elegant. And its' C215 sibling was absolutely sublime. Alas, the pre-MOPF cars were really crap in terms of material quality and reliability.

For me its probably the W116 as I had one in the family and it was built like a rock, so solid, so comfortable and classy and elegant and a terrific V8 with the 350SE. Close 2nd will be the W126 i 560SEL as well as 500SE form and also I like the W222 and then W221 and W220. The W140 I admired and still respect but its ungainly size i was never in love with compared to the other models.
It's quite funny that the W223 got most votes so far, despite the fact that the car is almost entirely unknown from many standpoints aside from its aesthetics. We don't even have yet proper reviews of how it drives/how it feels/if the numerous gadgets work properly, not to even speak of reliability. It's way too early to include it in such a top.

The W221s' glasshouse still looks as fresh as if it were presented just yesterday. The rectangular rear window in tandem with the glass roof actually look far more modern than the more current, rounded designs of the W222 and W223.
