The Chinese copycats thread

I'm even more baffled that the Chinese president and government are letting the country's growth be founded on a big copy cat industry.

They need laws fast. This is hurting the whole image of China, which can do perfectly without this copying nonsense. I'd love to see some original designs from China......maybe they can do better than the Japanese, who knows....

I was in Shanghai 7 years ago and was amazed at the development of that city and how modern it is. The only problem is that copy goods are sold everywhere, even clothing shops ripping off well know brands sold in the same shopping mall!! And then the music and film industry and watches not to mention. Fake CD and DVD shops everywhere and also watches sold at the markets, really good copies of Rolex, Omega etc, that are supposed to have Seiko internals. To be honest my fake Omega lasted 5 years so it wasnt that bad!!

Erm... Fong Kong, Chinese knock-off - I'm sure you can come up with other well known terms. It's nothing new from a country where an entire sub-economy is anchored in imitation.

I'm just frustrated because China is inching closer to becoming the world's most powerful economy. Dim Sum is a favorite treat of mine, I have immense respect for Jack Ma, respect how their government is using protectionism and have experienced quality Chinese products. Why does all the good have to be drowned by the unoriginal.

It's 2016 next month. How much longer will this go on, or will wide adoption of advanced tooling and technology ramp up the copying?

All they care about is the absolute power and the absolutely control of the country and people.Thank god at least I can wrote this sencence here...the truth can not be said in any Chinese forum.

I suppose the country is so big that the leaders have other problems to worry about, the copy cat industry is the least of their concern. Speaking of which, the product imitation is not limited to cars, it extends to health products, food, etc, which IMO is far more concerning.

We are very much guilty of fueling their production of copycat goods. The more imitation goods we buy, the more the produce and the more global trading is done in Renminbi which has now been approved as a main world currency. This news is unprecedented.

I think the Chinese market is big enough by itself to sustain these copycat goods, for example a city with a population of 6 to 7 million is considered as a small city.

Wow that imitation of the Macan looks really good but the interior although it looks almost the same I would question the build and material quality and also the smell cause I have heard that Chinese built cars smell bad cause of the glue etc used in the interior

Have we seen any EURONCAP tests for these car? I don't think the saving made in copying existing cars were put towards safety.

Yeah very good point, the safety standards of the chinese cars (copies and non copies) is really pathetic. I personally would not buy any car from that country.

While I understand your disdain for the copycats, just a reminder that the BMW 3 & 5 series sedans as well as the X1 are all manufactured in China, so I don't think it is fair to say one would never buy a car from a specific country.

I think these cars are only being sold in the Chinese Market, (which itself is a massive market) and that is part of the reason why these manufacturers see no need for ENCAP testing. They also know that they stand no chance of selling these cars outside of China without lawsuits.

China still has a long way to go before people realize the importance of safety and crash protection in a vehicle. Passengers are still not required to wear seat belts in China.

You honestly think China will become the most powerful economy?

Funny thing is, besides the obvious premium vehicles, I've seen chinese copycats of the Suzuki Vitara, Hyundai Tucson, Peugeot 308, Volkswagen Amarok and Ford Raptor. Really, really lame and even more lame is such a powerful country and economy as China, still overlook these issues, like a 3rd world country.
