The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986.
The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. And now, after four endlessly lauded generations, this famous moniker is history.
On 5 July, the final M3 Coupe, resplendent in fiery orange paint, rolled down the production line at BMW’s factory in Regensburg, Germany. But fret not, Bimmerphiles: a successor, dubbed M4 and based on BMW’s recently unveiled 4 Series, is set to arrive by the middle of 2014. It is certain to pick up where the overachieving E92 M3 Coupe left off. And in the meantime, the M3 Convertible carries on; production of the V8-powered droptop continues through September.

A manual will be offered, and what you hear is M DCT. The only M auto box cars are the X5/6. No M car has 8 speed auto btw

Heavy? The S65 V8 weighs 202kg. How much do you think the new (rumoured) turboed l6 will weigh with multiple turbos, large intercoolers and additional fluids? And the transmission, will it weigh any more to deal with the additional torque of the turbo motor?
Hint: The N54 and N55 weigh 195kg and 194kg.

Makes you wonder if it will be last M3 Coupe. Look at Mercedes. They have the C-class Coupe now, as well as the E-class Coupe (which would have been a CLK, which was the Coupe/Convertible variants of the C-class).... so BMW being BMW, maybe for the next generation of the 3 series, they could offer a simple 2-door chop of the 3er sedan, and then further differentiate the 4er family (ala 5er vs. 6er). It seems like the change over from 3er Coupe to 4er was more a marketing-driven initiative rather than an honest effort to create a new family like the 5er and 6er are highly differentiated. Next generation, BMW may be more honest with the 4er.

But I still believe it will be a lighter engine and a lighter car.
Hint: The N54 does not have forged pistons for example, and they can and surely will add EPS, which is lighter. Just little things adding up and making weight savings can make this car a great successor for the E92 and equal it's performance, outperform it, for that matter.
I think BMW will/should cut weight everywhere possible and give a better weight distribution (hard because of longer I6) if possible. I mean, they can't give us a car that is the involution of the one it replaces. If they went I6 route is not only for fuel efficiency, it should be lighter.

Right, I don't know why I was talking about the 8-Speed from the normal 3-series. For a moment I thought it was the normal 4-series coupe because I was browsing the Internet for info and videos about new 4-series and M4, and got mixed up while posting here and there. I'm glad to hear there will be a manual though
If M5 gained 300 lbs and so did the M6 over the E63 M6, what makes you think magically the new M4 will be lighter??
From all of the spy videos I am seeing at Nurburgring of E92 M3 chasing the F3X M4, it appears to be a much larger and heavier car. Besides, the engine/exhaust note much like the M5/M6 is completely dismal.
I am just being realistic here.
