M3/M4 The BMW M3 Coupe is officially dead..!!!

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986. The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. As part of the renumbering that splits the coupé and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, the M4 replaced those variants of the BMW M3. Official website: BMW M
Interesting and sad to see the M3 go. The M3 is undoubtedly one of Germany's most revered, respected, and capable machines. I don't mean to spark this debate again, but how is it possible that the new "4" nomenclature holds more power than the traditional "3"? An M3 has always been representative of a sublime, "ultimate" driving experience. Renaming the coupe is throwing away some very influential and powerful branding.

In a time when the M cars are no longer as dynamically dominant as before, is it the best idea to create even more differentiation and, perhaps more importantly, give the marketers room to exercise their ideas?

I saw this red M3 E90 today. What a stunning color for the M3 (y)

I saw a graphite gray DCT M3 competition package with aftermarket exhaust exiting a Walmart parking lot and it sounded beastly. Absolutely fabulous looking car. He had spacers on it so it gave it a crazy wide stance.

If M5 gained 300 lbs and so did the M6 over the E63 M6, what makes you think magically the new M4 will be lighter??

From all of the spy videos I am seeing at Nurburgring of E92 M3 chasing the F3X M4, it appears to be a much larger and heavier car. Besides, the engine/exhaust note much like the M5/M6 is completely dismal.

I am just being realistic here.

You can be all the realistic you want, I won't change my mind. BMW must give us lighter cars. All generaations of the Mercedes S-Class weight AROUND the same. Even with lots of luxury and security added with each new generation, still, they manage to give us a car that weights AROUND the same.

I named the S-Class, but if it's not convincing enough, then think about Audi, almost all the lineup is constantly losing weight, and I would say they even have better quality interiors than BMW. If they can, BMW should.

(Sorry for extra post, I'm using an old computer and can't write to much on the same)
If M5 gained 300 lbs and so did the M6 over the E63 M6, what makes you think magically the new M4 will be lighter??.

Now, the increase in weights you talk about are understandable and I agree with you. Bigger body, more powerful engines and added security mean a heavier car. But as someone told to me, the S65 engine was lighter, so even though the E92s overall weight was increased (I guess mainly due to security reasons, again) in comparison to E46 M3, the heaviest part of the car was lighter.

BTW, I don't believe in magic. It's all about engineering. Besides, M4 may be bigger than E92, but it wont be as luxurious as the M5 or M6... (So extra weight is not justified, this time not even by security as it was justified on its previous generations) Besides, you are not saying that those cars are way more efficient than the ones they replaced. But 90 Kg are not "such an issue" in F10, because as I said, its intended to be luxurious. But the M3 (or M4, for that matter) should start losing, weight.
If this does not happen, maybe I'll forget about getting an E46 and start saving for a used E82 while they are still around in good shape... And I'll say all this time you all were right about the new, heavy M4. BUT, if I'm right, we may have a better car than the E92 to admire =) and I'll get the E46 so I can save for a M4 or at least a 435i =)

P.S.
If it wont by any means be lighter, I bet it will at least be more efficient and aerodynamic. And before anybody says "who cares about efficiency in an M, well, we all do. Less fuel, more power. Smaller engines, lighter cars.

I'm not the bmw M3 target market. But they have to tow the line on weight. It would be nice if they premiered some of the i3 technology in a serious manner.

Here is a breakdown of all the E90 & E92 M3's which have been sold since inception as well as their respective breakdowns. It really is heart warming to see so many people purchased M3's with manual transmissions

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
