The Subaru Legacy is a mid-size car built by Subaru from 1989 to 2025. Their flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia.

Yet another deceptive and this time, forgettable concept car from Subaru. There isn't much creativity or refine styling on display here.

Subaru of America, Inc. announced it will debut the Subaru Legacy Concept at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show. The Legacy Concept celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Subaru Legacy and provides a look at the styling cues for future Legacy models.

Adorned with a custom Ocean Silver Metallic paint scheme, the Legacy Concept features a more coupe-like silhouette. The Subaru Legacy Concept is a modern interpretation of the Legacy and features a more distinguished front design with a new hexagonal grille and a sharper hawk-eye headlamp design.

Flared wheel arches cover 21-inch wheels and hint at the standard Subaru Symmetrical all-wheel drive drivetrain. A pronounced character line flows into the short rear deck and ends in the rear tail lamps. The tail lamps echo the hawk-eye headlamp design and enhance the solidity of the overall design.

Whatever happened to the Advanced Tour concept, I was desperately hoping the new Legacy will look like this...it is so much better than their latest concept.

I wish to heck that Subaru would stop teasing its fans with sexy design language and details that cannot feasibly make the transition to production.

I HATE Subaru for what they're going to do here. NO way this stunning concept is going to make production. Again, WHY BOTHER with this beauty if you aren't going to get remotely close to it for production? Look at this car concept good because you won't see it again.

^2nd that was just about to write that..they make great concepts, and visually challanged production cars..
why even bother?

Based on design alone, the only Subie that's appealed to me was the previous gen Legacy....my goodness, for mid-sized family car, it was a looker, especially in GT guise. They better not muck this up as I told my brother to wait on buying an Outback since a redesign is imminent!!!!

Totally agree with you

Surely if he wants to buy the current Outback, then styling isn't on his priority list.

^^Love that GT wagon. Spec B?

Haha, true. He wanted something with AWD, decent amount of space, and great reliability. However, based on some of the spypics, the upcoming car looks better than what's currently out there. But, then again, the watermark is not very high in terms of design for the current Legacy/Outback.

GT Spec B 402 STi, Japanese market only.

Anything is better than the current one, but if he wants all that then there isn't much else that is better than the Outback.

So Subaru's chef designer said the next Legacy won't look like the concept. I think we can work that out by ourselves, thanks. I am actually glad that the next Legacy won't follow this concept because it looks way too heavy and bulky. especially at the front end. Does the front really need to be this thick and blunt when it uses a horizontal engine?

A new, longer-bodied Subaru Legacy concept unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show yesterday does not reflect the design expected to hit showrooms in Australia late next year, a Subaru insider has told CarAdvice.

The insider said the styling of the Legacy concept only hints at what will be on offer from the version that will be released next year under the name Subaru Liberty in Australia.

It is understood the showroom version will be less dramatic in design, with a shorter body but more internal space.

“The new Legacy looks good, but don’t expect it to mirror the concept,” said the insider. “It definitely moves the car on in an evolutionary kind of way, but in terms of the concept’s styling, not a lot of that car has made it into to the next-generation production car.”

The concept marks the 25th anniversary of the mid-size Legacy sedan, which is Subaru’s flagship sedan, aimed to compete with the ever-popular Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima.

Subaru’s Chief Designer, Tatsuhito Itano, later told CarAdvice that, “while the Legacy concept lends certain design elements to the next-generation production version, it was never intended to be that car, more a look into the future design direction of Subaru’s mid-size sedans”.

“What I can say for certain is that we will not carry anything from the current Liberty over to the new model. Every part is totally new,” said Itano.

Measuring 4930mm long and riding on a 2880mm wheelbase, the Legacy concept is a large car, though the Subaru design chief says that the new Liberty will be longer and roomier than the current model.

Inside, the premium look Legacy concept will be a closer match to the production version apart from the quality of materials, according to Subaru’s design boss.

“The materials we used in the concept car are very expensive. There’s a full leather dash and premium grade metals, which are too costly to be used in a production car in this segment,” said Itano.

“However, we have taken at least 50 per cent of the concept’s interior design to the next Liberty,” he added.

Subaru has also confirmed the new Liberty will get more advanced safety features including a new, and more sophisticated version of Subaru’s Eyesight Driver Assist system.

It looks great. However, I guess. Well, I can actually bet on that, the production version will look nothing like the concept. Just like the WRX.
