The GTI will most likely have 220hp/350Nm. And 6,2l/100km fuel consumption. With the weight reduction as seen on standard Golf, it will be plenty fast. Huge power increase is not line with price reduction and Audi S3 specs.

It's odd these outputs, my dealer was overtly excited about the diesel having over 200hp so this figure of 185hp sounds like a single turbo version and not a bi-turbo one, also 220hp for the GTI whilst an improvement is well short of it's main competition so does this mean that Volkswagen no longer see the GTI as their iconic model of performance?

I'am not sure about the story behind these figures or what VW want and what they define
as a progression with their products but these are the figures I am presented with the new MK7.
All I can personally say is that Horsepowers is not all that counts IMO.

Indeed output isn't everything but it's still important in comparison tests when the GTI is lagging behind just about everything else.

No my puzzlement was centered around the diesel model and it's sub 200hp figure, as I said the local dealer was very excited about a supposed 200hp bi-turbo model to compliment the GTI which would tie in with recent comments in the press. Could he and the press both be wrong, sure but this engine is already known and it's doubtful it would be detuned to be dropped into the new Golf which makes me think this model is still yet to be confirmed.

Is it possible that the 185hp engine isn't the GTD or if it is then could there be a more potent offering due later?

Astra OPC probably cost the same as GTI but comes with 280 hp. Same goes for Focus ST with 247 hp. The new GTI must be pretty darn good if 220hp is enough.

Well his words (the dealer) was he believed it might have as much as 215hp and this wasn't from reading magazine, according to him it was from the manager when he was over at Volkswagen. Within a year we should know for sure if this is indeed true.
