2018 Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe Facelift caught testing for the first time

The mid-cycle facelift for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe looks like it will arrive a bit sooner than the customary “four years after model introduction,” especially since our spies have already caught a Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe that is all taped up to conceal its new design features.
Fret not, though, because the look of the model will be changed in a pretty modest manner, to say the least, with most of the nips and tucks taking place on the front and rear bumpers.

The front bumper will probably suffer the most under the knife, with the AMG-specific A-shaped front apron to be slightly restyled. Strangely enough, it seems that the engine grille could also be slightly restyled since engineers apparently went through all the trouble of camouflaging it.

Since this pre-production prototype is an AMG model, the biggest news is expected to be found under the hood, where the twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter V8 (M157) has had its days numbered for a couple of years now.

Instead of that dusty old mill, Mercedes-AMG will gift the facelifted S63 (sedan and coupe) with a more powerful version of the new “hot-vee,” a twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 that's already under the hood of the GT, GT S, GT R and the C63.

If we were to guess, when powering the AMG S-Class the new M177/M178 will probably deliver 612 hp and 900 Nm (627 lb-ft), or just as much torque as the current 5.5-liter and a bit more horsepower.

Transmission-wise, it is expected that the multi-clutch version of the old 7G-Tronic will be replaced by a similar variant of the 9G-Tronic, which will also be modified to accept an all-wheel-drive system on all left-hand drive markets.

Speaking of which, only countries like the UK, Australia, and Japan will get the rear-wheel-drive version of the S63, while all LHD markets will be blessed with AWD as standard. As a side note, Mercedes-AMG is expected to lose the 4Matic moniker on its all-wheel-drive models and replace it with one of five names that are currently being discussed.

Thanks to a slightly lower weight, more efficient transmission and more power, the model should be 0.1 seconds faster from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph), while the top speed will still be electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).

Expect the facelifted Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe to be released sometime at the end of 2017, as a model year 2018. Pricing should remain relatively unchanged.

Seems the S63/65 will switch to vertical slat grill like the AMG GT R.

The one I'm looking forward to see is the replacement for S400 with the new inline 6 and likely +400hp.

The vertical bars in the grill (from the AMG GT-R) can clearly be seen here on the f/l version from my 1080p computer screen.

Also, I am a fan of the elongated air dam openings on the pre f/l.
This design feature complimented the theme the S AMG coupe is built off of and was unique to the S coupe. The ram-air spoiler set up on f/l is sportier and more aggressive, almost screams F1 Pace Car.

My question is the headlights. The S-Coupe should feature a new set of graphics from the f/l
S-sedan in a slight redesign. Not featuring the set up of the current version.

I have read elsewhere that all AMG models except S63/65 will get a separate fascia specific to the AMG brand

I honestly think it already looks perfect as it is .... So this new facelift is something I approach with caution. Let's see how it will all pan out

Why can't they let the exterior like it currently is and just upgrade the interior...
I really hope that they don't mess around with the 217 :(

@GTA8.5
I guess it will be similar to the new E63 :

AMG GTR grill ? Don't think so...

Good chance it will happen.
As I pointed out above, the vertical slats in the grill are inline with the dots on the camo
and can be seen through it. The GT-R is top dog now, so some of the features, like its grill will trickle
to other hi-end AMG models in the lineup.
