Looks exactly as you would expect
The second generation Audi R8 Spyder is making its spy photo debut ahead of next year's expected launch.

Spied this morning near the Nurburgring, the upcoming R8 Spyder looks exactly as you would expect and makes the switch from the coupe's fixed metal roof to a fabric top which will likely add some weight. As a consequence, the extra bulk will hamper performances so the 0-100 km/h run will take a few ticks of a second more than the V10 coupe which needs 3.5 seconds for the task while the V10 Plus coupe does the run in 3.2 seconds. Consequently, top speed will likely decrease a bit from 200 mph (320 km/h) and 205 mph (330 km/h), respectively.

Seen in the attached spy photo gallery is the standard V10 version, but we expect a more powerful V10 Plus model to be available from day one, with both of them being substantially more expensive than the equivalent coupe. Compared to the old model, the new Spyder will be up to 50 kg (110 lbs) lighter and will utilize an evolution of the 5.2-liter naturally aspirated engine set to deliver 540 PS (397 kW) and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) in the standard model and 610 PS (449 kW) and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) if you upgrade to the Plus variant.

Chances are Audi will stage the world premiere of the all-new R8 Spyder in March 2016 at the Geneva Motor Show, with sales to begin in the second half of the year. Later during the car's life cycle, a new entry-level version will be added to the range and is set to employ a six-cylinder turbocharged engine.

Audi R8 Spyder spotted testing in Spain with the fabric roof up

Audi R8 Spyder testing continues as our spy photographers have spotted another fully camouflaged prototype stretching out on public roads.

Caught on camera somewhere in southern Spain, the open-top R8 was being tested alongside the coupe showing subtle cosmetic changes. Aside from adopting a fabric roof, the most significant modifications can be seen at the back where the Spyder has a more upright rear window and a new ventilated engine cover.

By removing the fixed metal roof, Audi’s engineers have to make some reinforcements and this will have an impact on the supercar’s weight as it will increase a little bit over the coupe. As a consequence, the level of performance offered will suffer a minor decrease when compared to the standard model.

That won’t matter a lot for someone who is in the market for open-top supercar thrills and is willing to pay more than the €165,000 asking price of a standard R8 Coupe. In the top-spec V10 Plus guise, the R8 Spyder will likely surpass the €200,000 threshold taking into account the equivalent coupe starts at €187,400 in Germany.

Audi will sell the new R8 Spyder exclusively with a naturally aspirated V10 5.2-liter engine developing 540 PS & 540 Nm in the standard version and 610 PS & 560 Nm in the aforementioned V10 Plus specification. The latter will likely run the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in approximately 3.4 seconds since the coupe needs 3.2s for the same task while top speed will likely decrease a bit from 205 mph (330 km/h).

Audi will probably decide to introduce the new R8 Spyder in the second half of next year, possibly at the Paris Motor Show set for early October. We are not excluding the possibility of a Geneva reveal in March to have the car ready for deliveries in time for the summer.

2017 Audi R8 Spyder Spied Undisguised in Namibia

Audi engineers are putting the finishing touches on the 2017 Audi R8 Spyder because the Audi product roadmap suggests that the drop-top supercar is going to debut in April. Happily, however, we can now show you what the second-generation Audi R8 Spyder looks like in the flesh, without any camouflage concealing its body shell. Hat tip to autoevolution reader Silas for the great low-down.

As mentioned earlier, the 2017 Audi R8 Spyder will be officially unveiled in April. Its first public outing should be at the Beijing Motor Show in China, which is slated to open its doors on April 25. Until then, two pics uploaded by cars_in_namibia on Instagram will have to suffice. Both units of the Audi R8 Spyder have been snapped west of the border of Namibia with South Africa. The location is near Upington, which is a stone’s throw away from the Kalahari desert.

Temperatures in the Kalahari occasionally reach 113 degrees Fahrenheit (45 degrees Celsius), which is perfect for putting a test mule through its paces. From above we can see two arched cowls that give the hood a similar appearance to that of the first-gen R8 Spyder. The cowls taper from the bulkhead and include air vents. Furthermore, a wide discharge vent is located between the cowls.

The diffuser, shape of the tailpipes, the taillights and the vents located underneath are identical to the fixed head Audi R8. As for the windscreen frame, anodized aluminum makes for an appealing contrast with the stainless steel brackets for the top. Expect Audi to offer the fabric roof in two colors: black or red. The electrohydraulic soft top will be similar to the mechanism used by the Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4 Spyder, so expect the top to open or close in approximately 17 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph (50 km/h).

The V10 Plus variant of the 2017 Audi R8 Spyder will employ a naturally aspirated 5.2 V10 with 602 horsepower (610 PS) and 413 lb-ft (560 Nm) of torque. Thanks to a fast-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and the quattro AWD system, 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) should occur in 3.4 seconds. The maximum speed will definitely be lower than the 205.1 mph (330 km/h) of the fixed head Audi R8 V10 Plus.

Namibia of all places. The engineers probably thought they could test undisguised without being snapped by a photographer.

The last two sets of "spy" photos look as undisguised as official press release photos.

Did somebody forger to release the damn car officially or has Audi gone snob and just allowed it to be bought?

:D

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
