the E-Class Coupe in E50 4Matic flavor is said to pack the all-new M256 engine. In other words, we’re dealing with a 3.0-liter inline-6 with two turbochargers strapped to it for good measure. Slated to debut in the facelifted S-Class, Mercedes-Benz promises more than 408 PS (402 hp) and 500-plus Nm (367 lb-ft).

It remains to be seen just how frisky the M256 will get under the hood of the 2018 Mercedes-AMG E50 Coupe 4Matic, but one thing is certain: the 48V electrical system. According to the automaker, the 48V system is a must due to the “electric auxiliary compressor.” So to speak, one of the two turbos is driven by electricity. 300 milliseconds is all it takes for the eZV to spool up to 70,000 rpm. Hence, the automaker is promising a “dynamic engine response with no turbo lag” from the soon-to-debut M256 twin-turbo inline-6 engine.

What happens when the low-rpm high torque from the eZV starts to wither? The larger exhaust turbocharger cuts in, of course. Beyond the fancy go-faster stuff, the integrated starter generator of the 48V system packs hybrid functions that include a momentary boost of 15 kW (20 PS / 20 hp) and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) during kickdown. Hence, every Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG model equipped with the M256 inline-6 can be considered a mild hybrid.

With that logic, why offer an E 63 saloon, because it might eat a lot of S 63 saloon sales?

And why are people assuming there isn't going to be an E 63 version? The text reads: "All up, Mercedes-Benz plans to offer up to five E-Class Coupe models from the start of sales".

It's just talking about "from the start of sales". It doesn't say there won't be other models later on.

Bingo! My thoughts exactly. There is clearly room for a E63 Coupe. It will still be like many thousands below the S63 Coupe and the S63 Coupe will likely pass 600hp next year in standard trim.

2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe: we take a ride
Ahead of its launch at the Detroit motor show in January, we sit in the passenger seat of the E-Class Coupe on Austrian roads
We spent a morning riding in a pre-production prototype of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé with Peter Kolb, the man who has overseen the extensive test and development operations for the latest German two-door, which is set to make its world debut at the Detroit motor show in early January.
Within a couple of miles of setting off along a closed road to our destination at an altitude of 2500 metres, it was obvious Mercedes-Benz has delivered a much more compelling and rounded car than its predecessor, which has been on sale in the UK since 2010.
The prototype we’re riding in is the E400 Coupé. It runs the more moderately powered version of Mercedes’ M276 petrol engine, a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 kicking out 328bhp at 5250rpm and 354lb ft of torque between 1200 and 4000rpm.
Straight away, it is clear the initial range-topper doesn’t lack for straight-line performance, nor mechanical refinement in the most soothing of its four driving modes. Mated to Mercedes’ smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission and with the optional 4Matic four-wheel drive system providing a nominal 55% of drive to the rear wheels, the 60deg unit propels the E400 Coupé along in a wonderfully effortless manner and is whisper-quiet at anything but manic revs.
It is only when we approach a series of corners and Kolb switches from Comfort into Sport mode that Mercedes’ efforts in imbuing the longitudinally mounted V6 engine with a hint of sportiness is exposed as a raspy crackle is unleashed through the exhaust on the overrun.
With a month to go before the new car makes its public premiere, Mercedes is holding back on official performance claims right now. However, Kolb says the E400 Coupé should be good for a 0-62mph time of about 5.0sec and a top speed limited to 155mph. That places it on the same performance plane as the old E500 Coupé, whose twin-turbocharged 4.7-litre V8 kicks out a considerably stronger 402bhp and 442lb ft of torque.
Kolb also reveals that the entry-level E200 Coupé will feature a six-speed manual gearbox, while all other models will be fitted with the nine-speed auto.
Improved handling and ride
Kolb says that along with a clear focus on performance and economy, the prime objective during the three-year development of the new E-Class Coupé was enhancing its handling and refining its ride in a bid to make it more attractive to a wider group of customers. “It started during the initial digital prototyping stage and has played a central role right the way throughout its development,” he says.
In a move he says has contributed to a heightening of its handling and provided the basis for increased comfort, the new model also receives a much stiffer body structure than its predecessor. No details are yet available, although the forthright test and development expert divulged that torsional rigidity, in particular, is better than that of the latest E-Class saloon despite the decision to continue with the pillarless design that has become a signature element of the car over the years.
As we continue our run along a valley road, Kolb also reveals a lot of work has been focused on broadening the characteristics of the standard Dynamic Select system, which provides the driver with the choice of four different drive modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. “The tuning is unique,” he says. “We have widened the range of settings so there’s now a greater spread in the steering, throttle and gearbox mapping in each of the modes.”
“Sheer agility and poise”
What immediately strikes me as we begin winding our way up the side of the mountain on more challenging roads dusted with snow and ice is the sheer agility and poise of the car.
Pushed along at speeds few potential customers are likely to ever experience, it corners with great enthusiasm and very little body roll. Fitted with 18in wheels shod with 245/45 Michelin Pilot Alpin tyres, it also delivers impressive grip and, in combination with four-wheel drive, terrific traction out of low-speed corners.
It is the quality of the ride that impresses the most, though. Despite sitting a nominal 15mm lower than the saloon, the coupé manages to soak up the worst of what the Austrian roads have to throw at it with great authority.
The prototype Kolb has brought along runs one of three suspension options that will be offered on the production version: a comfort-orientated set-up with Mercedes' latest Air Body Control system, which provides outstanding compliance. Also available will be a standard steel set-up with fixed-rate dampers and a so-called sports system with steel springs mated to adaptive dampers.
Also of note are the outstanding acoustic qualities. With a drag coefficient of 0.25, there is very little wind noise, even at high speeds. The real achievement, however, is the excellent isolation of road noise.
But if you’re after a more definitive verdict, you’ll have to wait until we get to drive the new E-Class Coupé for ourselves early next year. There is little doubt the new model is a vastly better and more rounded car than its predecessor. From the passenger seat, it displays all the endearing qualities potential buyers will surely be seeking; engaging performance, entertaining handling, superb ride quality and outstanding refinement.

So far these test drives seem promising..but I would have preferred it, if they test drove cars with the standard steel suspension instead of Air Suspension to get a more definitive review.

Mercedes-AMG E50 to be performance range-topper for new E-Class Coupe

ad49a38d6c5efaceed6276791ebcf4f5.webp

The current Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe doesn’t have a dedicated Mercedes-AMG offering with one of the tuner's hand-built engines, and neither will the redesigned model.

That’s according to Autocar which is reporting that the performance range-topper for the redesigned E-Class Coupe will be a new model dubbed the E50 Coupe.

The “50” in the name is said to signify two things. Firstly, it indicates that the car is positioned higher than the current E43 sedan. And secondly, it helps celebrate next year’s 50th anniversary of the founding of AMG.

Mercedes is yet to announce when the redesigned E-Class Coupe will debut but sometime early next year is likely. The E50 model should arrive alongside the regular E-Class Coupe or shortly after it.

Prototypes for the redesigned E-Class Coupe and E-Class Cabriolet have been spied for over a year. The E50, which should be offered as both a coupe and convertible, should feature unique styling elements as well as performance-tuned suspension. It should also have a unique power rating.

According to Autocar, the engine will be a new 3.0-liter inline-6 equipped with an electric compressor and delivering 402 horsepower. Mercedes has already previewed the engine.

Mercedes-Benz Passion Blog confirms that the first photos and details of the new E-Class Coupe will be published next week, most likely on Wednesday, December 14. A teaser video might also be released prior to the moment, as far as I learnt.

However, it is such a shame that we will witness the extinction of the 8-cylinder variants for the E-Class Coupe. An E 500 with the new M176 engine rated 476 hp and a full-blown Mercedes-AMG E 63/E 63 S 4MATIC+ Coupe with 571hp/612 hp would have been a mind-blowing achievement.

I hope there is still a slight chance to see those models in the next two years. :angelic:

Seems they haven't learned the lesson yet.
Shame...
And even after this :

I think we will see a E63 coupe, eventually. I remember reading news of Mercedes marketing personnel regreting not making a E63 coupe for the current generation of the E-class and that they would not repeat the same mistake.

Motor-Talk asked the E Coupe chief developer about that V8. :)

Whether Daimler will screw an eight-cylinder engine into the engine compartment, Früh would not say yet. We would be surprised if the just introduced E 63 did not also come as two door.

I think you're all getting worked up over nothing at this point. Just let the official information come out and see how the do the introduction of the models during 2017. I can't see them NOT doing an E63 Coupe. What I don't like is that they're going still use the current V6 in the E400 Coupe. Get rid of this engine. This car should also debut (along with the 2018 S-Class) the new I6 engines from top to bottom. The E400 with 365hp and the E55 with 490hp and the E63 602hp all with Cabriolet models should be the lineup IMO. The E63 Cabrio should be a wider car like the C63 Cabrio is, and it would be gorgeous. There is plenty of room for these cars as they won't even come near the price of a S63 Cabriolet.
