The most recent data available for an accurate comparison in the US is from 2024, but I estimate that it shouldn't have changed much by 2025.
GLE - 67,928 units
X5 - 72,573 units
It's a fact that, considering the work done by each (a second redesign, strange and outdated from the start, versus a completely new model, more innovative than ever), this difference will only increase, just as it will in the rest of the world. The economic importance of selling 10,000, 20,000, or 30,000 units or more than before shouldn't be underestimated; that's why all this work is being done.
The foundation of BMW's current success lies precisely in more work and better execution, with products more in line with the needs of today's consumer. Mercedes' recent designs seem to be targeting an older demographic, which, in my opinion, is one of the reasons their market share is declining year after year.
Not to mention that the new X5 includes an electric version, while the GLE doesn't, so yes, it all seems to point to an epic defeat. The GLE is a beautiful SUV, but like everything, it has an expiration date.
