P1 [Spy Shots] McLaren P1 XP2R Hints at New Special Edition

The McLaren P1 (codenamed P12) is a flagship sports car produced by McLaren Automotive. It is the second installment in McLaren's Ultimate Series after the McLaren F1. Considered to be the spiritual successor to the F1, the P1 was one of the first high performance sports cars to be introduced incorporating hybrid technology; the Porsche 918 Spyder having begun taking orders prior to the P1 and the LaFerrari introduced alongside it.

Is McLaren already preparing a beefed-up variant of the P1?
Having put the P1 hypercar firmly in everyone’s thoughts after a scintillating display at the Goodwood FoS, McLaren looks to be preparing a special edition model of its 903-horsepower flagship. Spied at the Nurburgring with the British carmaker’s chief test driver Chris Goodwin at the helm, the P1 was caught wearing a sticker reading “XP2R prototype vehicle.” The “XP” nomenclature is McLaren’s internal code for experimental prototype, and the “2” perhaps signifies this is the second such vehicle.

However, the “R” remains a mystery. Visually, there don’t appear to be any differences from the regular P1 but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any. We could be looking at a new limited edition with more power, say in the region of 1,000 horses, or this could be a racing-spec variant developed by the guys at McLaren GT. We just hope it’s not simply one of the final prototypes of the P1. Only time will tell.

Please read this everyone.
This is not a new limited edition or whatever the websites are calling it. This is false information.
There are no plans from McLaren for a special edition P1 as of yet.
This is an old XP (Experimental Prototype) that has been rebuilt.
'XP2R' stands for 'Experimental Prototype #2 rebuild'.

McLaren has offered the first hints of how its special track version of the P1 hypercar will look.

Called P1 GTR, the new model will cost £1.98 million and offer more power, performance, grip and downforce than the standard car. The 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 has been pushed to 986bhp (1000ps), it will come with track-focused slick tyres and the track has been widened.

So far McLaren has only released this sketch, but the P1 GTR is also set to have more aggressive and distinctive styling. It’s also thought that it will have a fixed rear wing, rather than the automatically deploying one on the standard car.

Exact production numbers have yet to be set, but only existing Mclaren P1 owners are eligible to buy the GTR version. It’s understood that all 375 of them have been contacted and the ones that have responded positively will put down a deposit.

P1 GTRs will only be built after the P1's production run has finished, which is thought to be by the middle of next year. 2015 will also be the 20th anniversary of the Le Mans-winning F1 GTR.

Buyers of the P1 GTR will become part of the GTR programme. Owners will get consultations with McLaren’s design director Frank Stephenson, chances to be trained by the Formula 1 team’s fitness instructors and access to the F1 driving simulators, plus a minimum of six dedicated track days at F1 circuits around the world.
