BMW 1-Series Hybrid Spied for First Time

Spy photographers have snapped a silver example of a BMW 1-Series Hybrid doing the rounds near Munich. The car may look quite ordinary but a peek on the rear side window and bumper reveals stickers with the words "Hybrid Test Vehicle". It will join other new BMW hybrids like the 7 Series ActiveHybrid and the X6 ActiveHybrid.
Lexus plans to enter the compact premium hatch segment with a hybrid-only range. BMW is clearly planning a counter-offensive, depending on who brings their car to market first.

Finally, a hybrid that really makes sense, will it be coupled with petrol or diesel engines ? And how come they didn't hide the hybrid tags ?

Scott from what I have understood from your posts, this should be a 3cyl 1.3diesel coupled with an electric motor, correct?

Yes this is our Active Hybrid 1. Although it will not appear with the E87 the trials are underway for the forthcoming F20 1er. To which the technology and drivetrain has progressed to full working prototypes.

Why is this significant? When the F20 is launched at the 2011 IAA. The Active Hybrid 1 will be available almost immediately. Again ahead of the competition and will be the most fuel efficient car in it's class.

For the time being , the current 1er , next year will receive the "Efficient Dynamics" treatment as shown at the IAA with the 320d. Again aerodynamic elements as shown on the 3er will filter down to this model making it the most fuel efficient BMW on the market.

so does this mean that 1er availability in the u.s. will be in the spring of 2011 as opposed to the fall and would it be designated as a 2012 model?

I dont think the US Market will be getting a 1er hatch.
In terms of european launches the 1er will be unveiled late Spring 2011 , the world Premiere will be at the IAA in September 2011.

European markets next year will see an Efficient Dynamics 116d , BMW's most fuel efficient car yet.
