The Porsche 991 is the seventh generation of the Porsche 911 sports car, produced from September 2011 to December 2019. It was unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show on 15 September as the replacement for the 997.

Dutch Autoweek says it's 45 kg lighter than the 997. And 5.6 cm longer, 6.5 cm wider and 1.1 cm lower!

Multilink rear suspension exclusive for the new 911, front suspension and other parts shared with the upcoming Boxter.
Carrera 3,4 liter 350 hp, Carrera S 3,8 liter 400 hp. 7th gear is an overdrive gear.

PS,

6.5 cm wider is huge. Will make a big impact visually.

An evolution, yet it makes the old one look old.

The front reminds me a bit of the first generation New Beetle :D :D

Thanks for the pics Sunny. I have to get used to the back, I think I like the one of the 997.2 better right now :eusa_doh: But real life pics will make a huge difference probably....:eusa_danc

BTW, guys, we need a proper official thread!!!

Love it, and love that Porsche kept this thing carefully timeless and mostly anti-trendy, well done and it keeps the 911 in its own plateau.

I'm not crazy about the rear lights, as they're too slim and angular-cut on an otherwise rounded body, and I find that to be the more gimmicky aspect of the design (that can age it in the future, whilst the rest just looks classic and timeless). I prefer the more natural look to the 997's rear lights, but we'll see in real life....

Also, I really really hope they're joking with the badging in the back.

I have always found "regular" 911's to look lacking, like too "open-canvase", begging to have some additional aesthetic options or mods, and this is no exception, which is a good thing, because once modded to look right, or better yet WHEN looking right, i.e 911 TURBO, it will stand out all that much more.

What a subtle, yet noticeable (side by side) evolution. Porsche is a design master when it comes to the 911. I want a cabrio please.

I agree with Sunny. The new one makes the old one look vintage, but thats not a bad thing.

Still though unless you just bought a 997 911 GT3 RS 4.0, you might kick yourself when you bring your 911 GTS or whatever in for service and see this beauty on the showroom floor.

And only IRL will we appreciate the new proportions. Lighter with more power too, can't wait to see it! I see 996 turbo in this design, anyone else?

Have they lowered the roofline a tad bit? If you look at the side profile pictures you can see that the side windows, particular the rear ones, a tad bit slimmer.

First new 911 in 13 years and they do this! Good job, really good job. A striking feature is the Lotus/Macca-ish rear, it works really well and somehow disguises the hunchback look.

Also a nice evolution of the old one, not as button laden as the Panny and the Cayenne.

Maybe I'm being nostalgic, but after seeing a classic 1970's 911 drive past me earlier today, I feel that the new 991 has forgotten it's roots. Curves, a semblance of a flat rear deck, a swept-back A pillar and a low roofline? Are we really talking about a 911?

The 991 evokes supercar-esque superlatives - sleek; curvy; sexy. These are words that I do not associate with the 911. The 911, at it's core, is ugly. It has design cues that would not work on any other car. Those large, circular headlights, that upright windscreen and the frog-like rear end - imagine a Ferrari with any of those styling elements and Luca di Montezemolo will personally come and punch your lights out. But ultimately the 911's looks have become it's defining character; a car which shouldn't have worked, whether it be from a design or engineering standpoint, but which has gone on to become an icon of the automotive industry and a design classic. It is an institution and the elements that make the 911 a 911 should always remain.

But from a styling standpoint, the new 991 breaks the trend of it's forefathers and has become something different. Too big, too curvy, too sleek. I'm sad to say, it just doesn't look like a 911.

I've said it before and I will keep saying it. This is a Ferrari 911. Reminds me more of a 360 Modena than a 911 to be honest :D

who wants the old now?

GTS, GT3, GT3 RS, GT3 RS 4.0, GT2 RS????

MEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Michael, yeah, the new 911 is 1.1 cm lower than the old one.

So it appears that again there will be a choice of multifunction steering wheel with PDK buttons or Non multi function steering wheel with the PDK paddles.

If you want more ergonomic paddles than you can not have volume control for your radio on the steering wheel.
