SolarWorld plans to bid for German Opel sites

Wed Nov 19, 2008 7:29am EST

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German solar company SolarWorld on Wednesday announced a surprise plan to offer to buy General Motors Corp's four German Opel plants as well as its research center in Ruesselsheim, Germany, sending its shares tumbling.
The company, which last year had sales of just under 700 million euros, said that it could offer up 250 million euros ($315.6 million) in cash and another 750 million in credit lines, which were conditional on a German government guarantee.
The move comes days after Germany's state and federal governments said they planned to decide by Christmas whether to extend a guarantee of 1 billion euros to Opel, should its Detroit-based parent General Motors file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
SolarWorld chief executive Frank Asbeck told Reuters his company's offer for the Opel plants was serious, but declined to detail his strategy for Opel following a potential takeover.
"We have not yet talked with GM," he said. "We are waiting for a reaction from them."
Shares in Solarworld fell 15.1 percent to 13.84 euros at 6:41 a.m. EST.
"This is a great gag," said Juergen Pieper, car analyst at Bankhaus Metzler. "Even if they are serious about this, it is absurd. SolarWorld is only getting itself in the news with this. Opel on its own is hardly able to survive."
SolarWorld said that a major precondition for its planned offer was Opel's complete separation from General Motors and that it would receive a compensation of 40,000 euros per German worker, which it said would amount to around 1 billion euros.
SolarWorld added that should its offer succeed, it would plan to develop a new generation of vehicles at the four plants with energy-efficient and low-emission engines.
Opel has plants in the German cities of Ruesselsheim, Bochum, Eisenach and Kaiserslautern. Its main plant in Ruesselsheim has about 16,000 workers and assembles up to 270,000 vehicles per year.
GM Europe has ruled out a collapse of the German carmaker, which traces its roots back to 1899 and has been part of GM since 1929, longer than rival Volkswagen has existed.

:t-hands:

Don't know, what I think about…a bad joke or really a great offer for Opel… :t-hands::eusa_thin

Already old news! GM has given Solarworld an annulation - reject the bid…

This means the end of Opel or not? And by the way, what is SolarWorld?

I am really waiting for your comments Eni..

Well, it looks like Opel will get some money from the german state. And Solarworld is a young german company, that produces solar cells! :usa7uh:

Just for those, who are interested in - here is the chart of the Solarworld stock (for the last 8 years):

So are they interested in buying Opel's factories (as assets) so that they will produce solar cells there, or they are interested in buying Opel as an automaker and continue to make cars?

They wanted to create the first "green" automobile manufacture. :t-cheers: Don't know about their plans - I'm no insider… :D:D …just write what they showed in the news.

Article

I just read here, that this offer will take effect only if Opel seperates 100% and cuts off GM. Also in this article is stated what you said, that they will try to produce more green and environmentaly friendly Opels. They don't say wheather they will keep producing the current Opel line-up or not, though..

actually i think that this could work.
with the help of electric cars solar panels could experience a "second spring". just imagine leaseable solar panels for your home or portable solar stations for your city car. after all solar panel companies are/have been owned by crued oil companies, so i suspect the development in this area wasn't really supported by this fact. this new connection(SolarWorld & OPEL) could ignite a whole new affordable trend.

I don't think this will work! Solar powered car? Many have tried, but solar power is not efficient to power a car. I know, because we had a solar powered car project here in the local univercity a few years ago, and we all could see that the technology offered today, is not enough for such a use...

yep, this has been proven not to work - i don't think that they would plan something like this
mounting stationary solar arrays ontop of a garage (for example), to charge ones electric car, would make more sense.
i could also imagine charging bays in citys e.g. near a shopping center

Yup, but this has to spread around! Same thing with the Hydrogen fuel stations

Opel and Saab NOT for sale! General Motors spokesman just confirmed it.

Sorry, but the article is in greek.

Economic Times Article

Here is another source!

The Article said:
NEW YORK: General Motors said on Thursday its German Opel nameplate is "not for sale" despite the perilous situation of the US auto
giant.

Tom Wilkinson, a GM spokesman told AFP that some global brands like Opel "are so integrated into GM's global operations, we would not or could not sell them. Opel is not for sale."

Any talk of a sale of the German unit "is just purely speculative," he added.

The comments came after a news report in Germany that car dealers could make an offer to buy the company.

An Opel dealer in Stuttgart told the magazine Automobilwoche in comments to appear on Friday that the idea was "under discussion and taken seriously" by dealers and that it was "not impossible."

The regional parliament in the German state of Hesse voted unanimously to provide Opel with up to 500 million euros in loan guarantees in the event that General Motors declared bankruptcy.

Wilkinson also said that Saab, a Swedish brand acquired by GM, is also "completely integrated into GM's global operations," and that "any talks about selling any of the brands are purely speculative."

GM has said it will run out of cash as early as January if it does not get help from the US government and analysts have said it would likely be liquidated if it was forced into bankruptcy.

So guys what do you think?

I think that's quite right. Especially after what I just now read for the first time in the original post:

GM Europe has ruled out a collapse of the German carmaker, which traces its roots back to 1899 and has been part of GM since 1929, longer than rival Volkswagen has existed.

Opel will be sold when GM is dead. Not before.

I only hope that Opel, Saab and Volvo won't be sold to the chinese when the americans collapse...

:t-cheers:

Well, that is great news and a great example of forward thinking, too!
