Early Wednesday morning we ran a story about the production of the three millionth Audi A3. In the materials Audi released with this story was one particular shot of every A3 variant produced thus far including 3-door, sportback, sedan, S3 versions, e-tron and g-tron, while at the center was one unknown car under a cover.
For fun we posted the shot to Facebook and put the question of identifying the car out to fans. We guessed RS 3 sedan because, hey, who wouldn’t want to see the RS 3 get dropped ASAP. Considering the timing and known spy photos thus far, many of our astute readers aimed theories at the idea of an A3 Cabriolet since the car was obviously notchbacked and that’s the expected configuration of the next-generation A3 droptop.
In the time since we made that post, we’ve seen the question/post get asked by others on Twitter, answered by many of our readers on our Facebook page and asked by still more Audi fan pages also on Facebook. Of course Audi’s not going to simply answer, so we decided to take a closer look… literally.
We’ve downloaded the largest version of the photo and close-cropped it to simply the covered car. Looking closely, we’ve decided to rule out any Cabriolet variant. Clearly you can make out the chrome window frame underneath the cover in the close-up and our own spy photos of A3 Cabriolet mules show that brightwork around the windows won’t be part of the ragtop’s design.
Given this, we’re most confident the car is a sedan of some sort. Is it an RS 3 sedan? It may be a bit early for such a car, but then again maybe not. It may also be an e-tron or g-tron variant of the A3 sedan. None of these versions have yet been shown and thus any could or would be teased by a silk cover.
Given these new clues? What say you? Follow the discussion link below to chew it over with other A3 enthusiasts in our forums or post a Facebook comment and let us know.
