Brave New World...BMW's (Front) Wheel Drive Future...

* 1001 Is the models internal designation.

It is possibly the most irregular concept that strikes fear into BMW enthusiasts everywhere.
In marketing BMW has always kept the BMW image strong by 3 core principles. Image , Dynamics and Rear Wheel Drive.
Now with the revelation that BMW have indeed drawn up plans to introduce a Front Wheel Drive car the reactions get louder and increase the debate and the fear.

First of all contrary to media reports and enthusiasts of the BMW brand , Front Wheel Drive is part of a strategy to help the next generation MINI and it's future variants to become more profitable and more cost effective for BMW to produce.
Initial strategies had lead to talks with PSA , Fiat and of course Daimler where the beginnings of a proposed MINI and Smart sharing programme disintegrated when BMW decided to go it alone.

The online enthusiast board reaction has been to overwhelm the negatives of the BMW philosophy but some overlook one very important ideal - BMW already do Front Wheel Drive and do it well , a car that has seen off new impressive competition such as the Fiat 500 and Audi A1 when it comes to make a Front Wheel drive car that handles , has a great image and offers the customer a perfect choice of flexibility.
It is called the MINI.

The Front Wheel drive BMW is limited to a small car concept that will remain within this segment only. BMW have no intention to completely kill it's golden goose and sacrifice it's core models such as the 1er , 3er , 5er etc to accomodate Front Wheel Drive. These models will remain rear wheel drive.

The key to this is a brand new compact platform shared with the MINI that if the first outcome is successful then BMW will build a range of models to support it's new segment.
This new Platform which has been engineered to support the MINI and BMW 1001 will be used within each Brands variants. MINI of course will be the first to expand and after an establishment period has indicated that BMW's concept was a success then BMW's design teams have on the table a range of additional concepts for the expansion.
Another key to the cost effectiveness of the car is that engines will also be shared as well manual, automatic and electric drivetrains. Engines will also be shared ranging from three and Four cylinders in both petrol and diesel format.

The big issue facing engineers and designers is whether to imitate the BMW Concept or start afresh aiming for an entirely new appearance to signify this new direction? You will have typical BMW design elements but reinterpreted to give a new impression of a totally different idea of a BMW.

The overall shape of the car differs completely from the typical MINI format , the closest intention on the market today is possibly the Honda CR-Z. In order to really sell home the concept. BMW wants the car to really strike out not just from the MINI but also it's competition.

The designers have gone for an edgier three-dimensional appearance in it's explanation it forgoes the use of lines to enhance wheelarches and now becomes more Three-Dimension as it is now stamped so you can see the widening of the rear quarter.
One idea intended to signify the new direction for BMW is expanded design cues talked about previously such as an enclosed normal glasshouse that is pushed inwards allowing a line that curves around the rear window forming the typical BMW kink impression in metal instead of the glass that follows through the doors to the front wing. The A-Pillars follow the direction shown with the Vision Efficient Dynamics concept and continue down into the front wing leaving a typical BMW wheel at each corner look , triangular shaped lights sit upon each corner, with the typical BMW double round headlights stepped with one slightly below the other another idea is the inclusion of indicator signals directly underneath the angel eyes.
The front of the car gets a smaller twin kidney grille again more three-dimensional as the front of the car allows the grille to be pushed further back.

At the rear of the car we have typical on each corner light units faired inwards with the body covering over the top parts of the units.
An expansive glass area wraps around but leaves a reasonable typical BMW C-Pillar. The shape of the glasshouse is dictated by the shape of the roof allowing a typical BMW sloping roof.

The stand-out stylish design has been chosen to really signify the new direction , a regular typical hatch would not be a major selling point to deliver the concept.
The interior will be unique to the car but as per BMW group the stuff you can see will be individual to the brand whilst the wiring etc will be shared across with MINI and BMW.

Another key factor for BMW is the driving comparisons with MINI and how the engineers will go to lengths to make sure that both MINI and the BMW 1001 offer as much differences underneath as they do in appearance.
The MINI will retain it's typical MINI Go-Kart trademark handling whilst BMW will be looking for a more dynamic approach , both levels of dynamics for both cars are attainable.

The 1001 will be used as a guinea pig to establish whether there is a market for a new BMW concept but the general idea of thinking ahead is very much evident in ideas for additional concepts.
The 3dr city car will come first but other ideas on the table seem to indicate an expansive strategy with a cabrio , small SAV or possibly Sport Activity Coupe , a Compact Tourer and even a small sedan.
One other thing in regarding to the 1001 is that it will not offer an expansive personalistion programme in the same vein as MINI, there will possibly be more of an personalisation in the guise of performance parts but the problem with personalisation is that since the advent of the MINI competitors have begun to realise the profits generated by specifying optional equipment , to which newer competitors have crossed the lines of what personalisation involves with more image enhancement - some very much in bad taste.

What about Performance , What about M?
Again it is too early to reveal whether such a concept will be attempted by the M Division such as the thought of which is causing sharp gasps of air at the mention of M Division and Front Wheel Drive?
What has been discussed and actually has been added by a designer is an RR model using the colour pallette from the S1000RR Superbike.
Something that has caught the attention of the BMW board and marketing because it establishes a new performance concept without sullying the sacred M Division although many feel that has already been done.

Why the need for a Premium Front wheel drive Concept from BMW?
The recent recession taught us that customers are willing to downsize to other segments if there vehicles offer the same luxuries and features as traditional luxury concepts. The prime example being MINI where in some markets for MINI sales were actually rising it was only to further examination that a higher majority of these cars were being built with nearly every option in the brochure.
To signify the importance BMW will preview the City Car concept in the future and be ready for launch in 2014.

JOY IS.... Down to the smallest detail

When BMW launch a new car it is not only in one form. BMW Miniatures have been a mainstay for enthusiastic collectors the World over. From a collection spawning from Classic BMW's from the 1940's to the 1980's but to the racetrack and today's new models.
Perfectly respondant in accurate detail and quality BMW miniatures can be found in 1:87 , 1:43 and 1:18 format with some exclusive models available in 1:12 scale.
BMW employ many companies renowned the world over for their detail and quality in the development of a BMW Miniature , with Schuco more recently coming aboard have produced highly detailed 1:43 versions of todays best selling models such as the BMW X1,
X6, 5er Sedan,Touring and Gran Turismo and soon the new BMW X3 and 6er Coupe and Cabrio and the latest MINI model MINI Countryman.

Not only are BMW models included , but other BMW group brands MINI have already a full line of Miniatures with Rolls-Royce arriving within the last quarter of the year.

The following extract is taken from a Schuco newsletter but provides a fascinating insight into the replication of our favourite models in a smaller scale. BMW Miniatures are available from BMW Partners and at the BMW on-line shop at www.BMW.COM.

So accurate you can't tell the difference: the new 1:43 Schuco model BMW 5 GT.

For collectors, the historic models by luxury model car maker Schuco are the top of the range. The precision and quality of these vintage cars are unsurpassed. But the miniature car makers also produce the very latest vehicles. They'll have done months of work behind the scenes even before the original bursts on the world – at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, for example. One such secret has just been revealed: the BMW 5 GT, Fürth version.

Nowadays, as soon as a car manufacturer has settled on a new model, the call for tenders goes out to miniature model makers. The small edition has to be in the shops at least by the time the new automobile hits the showrooms. The delivery date often coincides with a big international motor show. So in this case: the Sixty-Third International Motor Show in September in Frankfurt am Main. The new BMW officially came onto the market just two months later.

In summer 2008 Schuco's Senior Product Manager, Michael Baumgärtner, received yet another secrecy agreement from BMW AG. Strict confidentiality is the normal state of affairs for people who work for Schuco. The head of department had to sign and return the confidentiality agreement before he could even access the tender documents via a locked online portal. The access code is sent by phone or e-mail.

Strictly confidential
Undercover agent Baumgärtner prepared the costings for several thousand model cars. A big international concern like BMW never calls for tenders from more than two or three trusted partners. Price, quality and brand reputation will decide who wins and who loses. The decisionmaking process took nearly two months. Baumgärtner was proud to hear that Schuco had won. "Just a few years ago we had no presence in the new car market," he admits. But thanks to the hard work of Baumgärtner, his team, and Schuco's Far Eastern manufacturing partner over the last three years, this traditional model-maker – which has sold over 100 million models worldwide – is now a favorite with big modern automobile manufacturers as well. Schuco regularly conjures up miniature marvels not only for BMW but also for all the other German car makers.

The devil's in the detail
After winning the order on 1 September 2008, Schuco soon obtained the original CAD (computer aided design) specifications. It meant yet another password: security level red. Next step: a detailed analysis of the new-look BMW 5 GT (Gran Turismo) Coupé by BMW design chief Adrian van Hooydonk. This was exciting because there had never been an automobile design quite like this one, blending the BMW 7 limousine with the X6 introduced in 2008.

"It's important that you don't just look at the key figures: you've got to engage with the underlying philosophy," says Baumgärtner, describing their minute analysis of the specifications. One thing about BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke) really appealed: "BMW is the only manufacturer that still demands a hood that really opens." Because the engine is visible, it has to be made and built in, which is quite a challenge in the model car business. "It's a chance to display our know-how and superior quality," says this master of the mini-limousine. It also determined the decision to go for the 1:43 model size. "At that level we can showcase all our skills: only zinc die casting does full justice to our precision," he adds, summing up Schuco's successful new-car strategy.

Every millimeter counts
As soon as the data analysis is complete, the CAD data are re-checked by measuring against the original at the BMW works in Munich. It takes three hours. Every minute detail, every molding, every alignment, every line in the headlamps is noted on the blueprint and photographed.

The package of photos, sketches measurements, and rules is then rushed off to the development team in Dongguan, south China. For over twenty years, Schuco has been working together with King's Favour and its 800 employees, who have fully embraced the Schuco philosophy.

The prototype, made of flexible epoxy resin, which is easily corrected

The designers and engineers take six to eight weeks to produce the prototype – a model made of epoxy resin. It's twice as big as the eventual model, making the details easier to see. The prototype was air-mailed to Schuco's headquarters in Fürth and shortly afterwards shown to the customer. Then BMW sprang its big surprise, a tiny extra highlight for the customers' delight: the model had to have the panoramic glass roof which counts as special equipment on the original. Phew! A gasp from the Schuco team. But there's still time. "It's easy to make changes at prototype stage, because the casting mold has not yet been finalized," explains Baumgärtner."These last-minute changes are an additional challenge, of course, but our Schuco specialists can cope."

Finishing touches
With the prototype on show the finishing touches are discussed: Where is chromium needed? Where would it be best to use stamp printing, i.e. color rather than engraving? Spacings, for example, are often engraved, because real openings look too big on the model and spoil the overall impression. After the last big decisions have been made about the little car, the prototype is flown back to the Chinese manufacturer, which prepares the steel molds for the bodywork. This can take another ten to twelve weeks. The first models are exclusively for BMW: either sapphire black, with beige interior, or damask red with black interior. Schuco can subsequently produce other original colors for the specialist retail sector.

The first tiny beauty
At last, in July the first four models from the Chinese designer are ready for the final inspection. While the Schuco experts perform the absolute final check, back in China the mold is all ready and waiting to be fired. Tiny corrections are still possible at this "soft" stage. You have to be careful with test injections to ensure there are no slippages to the most delicate of edges or to a millimeter of engraving. The mold will not be fired until the customer has given the final go-ahead. This happened at the end of July. Including waiting time, the Schuco team had been working on the project for almost a year.

Something special about Schuco, and about the new BMW miniature, the underbody is fully formed. This high level of detail is unique to the market. "Best of all, our cars roll really well, which is more than you can say about many models on the market. Furthermore, the Schuco experts have endowed them with their own headlamps and tail lights – split, just like the full-sized version, and the interior is protected by a glass cover. On earlier models the lights were just pinned in.

Unique to the smallest detail
The interior detail is unusually authentic too. If you peek through the two fingers-wide windshield, or the side windows, you can see safety belts, contoured upholstery and the map on the tiny navigation system. You need sharp eyes, of course. "We always set out consciously to go that bit further than our competitors," explains Baumgärtner.

When the full delivery arrives, in blank cardboard boxes with Chinese characters, happy smiles flit over the faces of the six-man Schuco team. The little newcomer is a tiny work of art: a one-off, but many of them, you might say. But arrival of the new BMW 5 Sedan and Touring is already well advanced, and that goes for the models as well as the originals. These models too are very, very small. And beautiful.

SCOTT, could you tell us what car is the one on yor avatar?. Z SS?.

is it odd that I like the 5GT model car more versus the real deal?

Can't wait for part 2 of the update!

The above is too conventional , make no mistake that BMW need to cement this strategy and to do this they have to think out of the box in regarding the design. To sell the concept and in particular the "FWD" Angle. The car has to show something on the outside packaging before anyone is convinced about what goes on in the inside.

Why does this car have to exist ? Why isn't Mini and I cars sufficient ?

Scott, your avatar is the 1001,? I' think looks special, thanks for you response.

We know to some that this car is a form of Blasphemy but at least the design team have made sure that it will be a "sexy" looking kind of blasphemy.

Personally I think it's appearance will be it's main drawing card , it will be so different to it's competitors that use a conventional 3dr hatch shape. If you get that right then to some, whether it is front or real drive will not be the concern it is made out to be.

If I have faith in this product is because fo MINI and RR. BMW doesn´t use to piss me off with its other brands. This is stil a BMW, so I´m sure it will be at least on par with the nicest car of the segment (a.k.a. Audi A1).

Maybe it's just me, but BMW seem to be getting in over their heads. SO many new models coming up, and some of them (5'er GT, X6, to name a couple) are absolutely hideous to me, and I predict won't sell well. If all these new models don't go over as planned, and start becoming money losers, the brand might see themselves in some trouble in the future? Plus, I've been criticizing M-B for this too, however, with BMW being even worse, I don't see how having so many new models (especially so many that are getting more and more in the "affordability" range) will help them maintain a "Premium Brand" status as the years/decades/etc. roll on.

Anyway, that's worst case scenario. Of course, there's always the plus/beneficial side, that they obviously predict from all of this.

What you describe there, could be indeed the worst case scenario, but fact is that the X6 and the 5GT, especially the X6 do sell very well

The X6 was supposed to sell 30.000 per year before the crisis, but in its first full year of sales during the recession it sold 45.000 if I am not mistaken.

Just because some models don't look like they sell good in the US, it doesn't mean that they don't sell at all in the rest of the world.

I have to agree with that...and if your avatar is a hint, BMW is off to a good start.

That US article and response about the sales of the 5er Gran Turismo was totally inaccurate and showcased poor journalistic judgement.
First of all they were referring to GT sales as a whole when in fact that article was purely about the launch in North America.

in Europe GT sales have just passed 20,000 units since it's introduction in November 2009. Whilst it is not as big numbers as say the X1 which is creeping up on 60,000 units but thats not the issue regarding the GT.
The GT is not a high volume BMW whereas the X1 is .

Another thing the journalism failed to mention is that US sales of the GT since late last year to last month have eclipsed two years sales COMBINED of the car the GT replaced the 5er Touring.

The Journalist late his hate for the GT get in the way of being objective.

As for the X6 it has doubled it's initial projections of 40,000 units to over 80,000 units within it's launch in Spring 2008.
Hopefully in the not-so-distant-future we will announce the passing of 100,000 units.

It is of no secret that BMW see both concepts as ideas ripe for downsizing. That is why we will see a BMW X4 and a BMW 3er Gran Turismo, there is demand for stylish concepts in that segment.
In the X4's case there is a lot that can be shared with the new BMW X3 to provide a highly cost effective solution for doing so.

Speaking of new segments, congratulations are in order for the MINI Countryman - The model has now sold out for the rest of this year.

It looks like exactly what it says it is: MINI Scooter E Concept, debuting in Paris. http://www.facebook.com/MINI#!/MINI?v=wall I guess that means project i isn't limited to BMW cars only, but also includes bikes and even other brands within BMW Group (MINI). It makes me believe project i is huge, and will be exercised through various brands and vehicle types, including MINI Scooter. :t-hands: Scott, is there more BMW Group surprises waiting to be premiered in Paris? I wouldn't even be surprised by a Rolls-Royce Hybrid Concept.

I had heard the GT was to be the first body variant in the new 3er lineup, and it was delayed in order to evaluate the 5er GT success before launching. ¿Was it right? ¿Does it mean the 3er GT has all green lights now for a quick launch?
