Spy Shots: First look at production VW Scirocco!

After going back and forth on whether or not it will be offering the upcoming Scirocco hatchback in the U.S., Volkswagen still appears to be up in the air on the matter. These spy shots taken by KGP Photography in the deserts of California further confuse things. They are the first shots of an actual Scirocco prototype, not a Golf-bodied development mule.

Despite the front and rear ends being covered, it's easy to see that the production Scirocco will retain much of the style previewed on the IROC Concept last fall. It's clearly much lower than the Golf hatchback, with a cab-forward type greenhouse and short hood. It has a low-slung look, almost like the last-gen Honda Civic Si hatchback, but even lower and wider. The face, though obscured, also appears to sport a honeycomb grille almost identical to the one on the IROC Concept.

So will it come to the U.S. or won't it? We don't know, but we're hoping this prototype's presence in California is a good sign.

Re: SPIED: VW Scirocco

Hell yeah! That's what i was awaiting from VW! Bring it on! The legend reborn!:usa7uh:

Thanks for the post, Martin! :usa7uh:

:t-cheers:

Re: SPIED: VW Scirocco

It looks like the production version is staying true to the IROC Concept car.

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

Even the funky grille.

Re: SPIED: VW Scirocco

the shape looks pretty promising, what's its position in relation to rabbit/gti? suppose to be below it?

Re: SPIED: VW Scirocco

For the life of me I can't find a reason for this car to exist. It is just another hatchback, slightly squashed, not a real sports coupe like the Scirocco or Corrado were. Another pointless VW that will only conflict with the only VW hatchback that matters, the GTI. No wonder the head of the VWoA stated that he didn't want this car, its pointless!!!

Re: SPIED: VW Scirocco

Lol, you see i'm totally blown by this car given that i liked the old one very much.

Together with Corrado, my fav VW of all time.

Same here Marcus. I find this new Scirocco to be a hatchback as well just like the golf. So what's the point in offering two hatchbacks of the same size under one brand? Will this Scirocco be a Golf alternative or what? IMO this concept has nothing to do with the original scirocco. Just using the name for marketing purposes...

Re: SPIED: VW Scirocco

Yeah the Corrado was one of my favorite cars during that time too, especially when it got the VR6 engine. VW is making me sick with all these half-arsed things they're doing especially their treatment of the U.S. market, it is deplorable.

Re: SPIED: VW Scirocco

So ...

Will VW offer both 3dr Scirocco, and 3dr Golf / Rabbit / GTI? :t-hands:

Both of similar size, similar engines, similar shape (3dr hatch) yet different styling. :t-hands:

Is that really a good idea?

In the past Scirocco / Corrado differed more from the Golf - design, size, and price wise. And don't forget the Eos - the Coupe/Cabrio. What a crowd. :eusa_thin

Will 3dr Golf be ditched? :t-hands:

Re: SPIED: VW Scirocco

We don't even know anything about Golf VI, so i'd say it's too early to say anything. Scirocco will debut after Golf so i'm somehow sure they know what they're doing...

:t-cheers:

Re: SPIED: VW Scirocco

The Scirocco will be a coupé GTI so to speak. The 3-door GTI sits a little too tall, even if it has 2 doors like the Scirocco. I see this selling very well, I expect it to be sportier than the GTI.

Maybe it can be placed alongside the Eos. So cabriolet and coupé in a upper market segment than the Golfs.

Re: SPIED: VW Scirocco

According to some reports Winterkorn was not happy with the design of the Scirocco (and i can't blame him really) so he ordered for a redesign.

So my guess is that Scirocco (if made) will be different than the concept.

So why the testing prototype looks almost the same as the Concept???

Even the grille looks very similar to the one on the Concept car. :t-hands:

Could it be all reports about "Winterkorn ordered redesigns" were false, and just a fruit of wild imagination? VAG never commented such claims.

I beleive the Scirocco is longer and wider than the Golf not to mention the different looks. Further more it will be more expensive than a Golf. Think of it as a Golf coupe. :)

So, why not a more coupe-ish shape then (and less hatch-ish)? At least something similar to the Corrado.

Re: SPIED: VW Scirocco

Good to see that are keeping the concept looks, I wonder if they will offer the green paint job!
