Same Question , Different response.

I certainly like the adventurous front end of that impression. It's a cool evolution of the sinister Angles Eyes which eventually have to be replaced by all LED head light clusters. My only objection is that the front resembles a warthog and look a bit too muscle car-ish. Some refinement would have to be made for that concept to stretch across the entire range. On the other hand I like that the front bumper reaches from bottom to top with shut lines edge to edge with the head lights.

..."the Compact Activity Sedan"

Scott, is this different than the Progressive Activity Sedan?

I am a bit confused, hope somone can post a quick reply to help me.
I thougt that the supersport would be based on the current model and not the F20?
That chop and all the talk about different front ends and rear ends (including bumper and lights) seems to indicate that it is next modell that is getting the treatment. Which is correct?

Would be nice if it were so, i really like the previous bmw interiors from e46 and back, and from new x5 and the F01 I think they are spot on again after some struggling.

Compact Activity Sedan / Coupe is a small crossover based on 1er ... it will be a mix of a sedan / wagon / shooting brake ... a substitute for a classic sedan & wagon.

PAS = large crossover based on 5er
PAC = medium crossover based on 3er
CAS = small crossover based on 1er

1er family:

5dr hatch - conventional 5dr hatch
3dr hatch - conventional 3dr hatch
2dr coupe - sedanish coupe with 2 doors
2dr coupe SuperSport - race-oriented 1er coupe; a substitute to M1 coupe
2dr cabrio - sedanish cabrio with 2 doors & canvas roof
roadster (Z2) - 2-seater roadster with canvas roof
SAV (X1) - AWD 5dr wagonish mini SAV
small crossover CAS (1er GT / Y1) - 5dr mix of a hatch & wagon & sedan -a substitute to conventional sedan & wagon which won't be offered

Under consideration:
X-cabrio - an AWD cabrio-crossover with canvas roof
Z2 coupe - a small 2-seater coupe with fixed roof ... based on Z2 roadster
1er Shooting Brake - a 3dr shooting brake vehicle either based on 1er coupe or 1er CAS

:t-cheers:

^ So you are saying the CAS and Z2 have been given the green light and are going into production?????

No. But the proposed new 1er platform is designed to be able to feature all the above mentioned bodies. Not sure which ones will get finally green light for production ... especially in these difficult times. Mind the list is still from pre-crisis times.

Today all past decisions are under revision ... It's hard to forecast the outcome ... which proposed models will be canceled, and which not.

But it's the easiest to offer many niche models based on 1er & 3er platform - since the economy of scales is on the reach here. Especially the trend is in small(er) vehicles. Therefore also MINI family expansion (crossover etc).

While the larger platforms (5er+6er / 7er / X) will be less attractive to build on ... very specific low-volume niche models only ... 4dr coupe, PAS, SAC, SAS etc.

Although next X3 platform is designed to also be able to carry SAS body. 5er / 6er platform - also compatible with LWB sedan, PAS & possible 4dr coupe body. 7er platform: sedan, 4dr coupe, complete baby RR family.

While the possible Z8 roadster, or super-coupe was planned to feature a special chassis / body - aluminum / magnesium / CF.

But as said: the times are very turbulent. BoD meets every week - reacting to current situations. The decision making is very dynamic, and the info are hard to get. Many decisions are even postponed - till the Spring / Sommer when it will be more clear how nasty the 2009 will be. And how much money will be available from the banks.

So is the new supersport 1er coupe scheduled for mid-2010 an E8X with different sheetmetal or is it based on the new platform?

^ That's what I am not sure about either....If they are really going to change the exterior looks of the SS so much, my best guess would be that it's for the next gen 1er (F whatever)

Thanks Eni for the information and rundown on the platform. I for one am interest in both the PAC and CAS. Where I live in San Francisco, parking is at an absolute premium ($350/mo for a space) so I need a vehicle that does it all and is fun to drive. I have a Cooper S but that is not big enough for two kids, the dog and all our crap. Wife doesn't like the clubman and I don't like the new Mini interiors. Always preferred BMWs anyway. So I say bring em both on.

Okay, it has been 8months. Has this been cancelled? We havent heard much in this department. I was hoping to see something a Frankfurt but it dosent look likely. I mean with the "M1" and "Z" getting all the buzz recently. The 1er is looking to be that redheaded stepchild that gets the shaft.
