Saab to present 9-4X in Detroit next year
Saab is close to completing development work on a new midsized crossover it plans to launch late next year. The new model will be called the 9-4X and, according to Saab boss Jan Ake Jonsson, will be appearing at next year’s Detroit Auto Show in January. To spread development costs, the platform for the 9-4X will be shared with a similar Cadillac model and both cars are expected to get GM’s new diesel co-developed with VM Motori, which outputs 250hp (184kW) and 550Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque.
Jonsson also hinted at the development of a baby Saab 9-1, which would be aimed BMW’s 1-series. Though nothing is confirmed, he did mention that the 9-1 project was under serious consideration.
As for the 9-4X, Jonsson revealed the new model would be built in Mexico alongside the Caddy version. Both cars will be exported to the U.S. and Europe and will feature a range of petrol engines as well as the aforementioned diesel. The Saab version will also feature the new XWD four-wheel traction system developed by Haldex.
