I don't think MB S class and good snow capabilities, would have expected an Audi to won this, due to quattro!

4-Matic is avalible as a no charge option on the S430 and S500.
I`ve herd some excellent reviews on 4-Matic BTW.

Really? If it's free then why not just make it sandard.

I think its good two have two choices.

Re: S-Class rated best All-Weather sedan by NEMPA

Well it doesn't exactly hurt to have it even though you don't want it. Okey, a few hp might be eaten up by the four motion system but I don't think that S500 cares about that. Anyhow does anyone know how much this option cost if you have an E or C-class?

Its worth the extra money for sure....

It was free the first year production as a promo, since then there is a charge for it....

Perhaps one of our MB employees can verify....

I'm not sure how much 4-Matic costs, but I think it's good to have an option, as well, even if it were free.

The 4WD system would take up (depending on if it was permanent or part-time) some engine power, and thus increase fuel consumption, and even if those aspects were minimised by it being only part time, it still adds weight to the car.

The S500 really doesn`t care. Last time I checked the speed time for the
4-Matic S500 were exacly the same as the normal S500 according to Car&Driver.

Interesting, but I'm sure some people might not prefer to have 4-Matic on their vehicle for the above reasons, and seeing as how RWD on the vehicles seems to draw no complaints from anyone it doesn't really matter. Having the system available does matter though, and it does work.

Been driving with confidence in 4-Matic MBs for a longtime now, no complaints, works fantastically, saved my life a couple times :usa7uh:

Interesting how the RL won in the $30k-$50 arena, its got some tough competition, but I hear/read that they have a very advanced AWD system.

Yeah 4Matic should be an option. The are parts of the U.S. where awd isn't needed. It would just be an added expense.

i for one would opt NOT to have the 4matic...
Apart from extra fuel consumption, i think it generates more noise... and i always like RWD more...

Cars like S55 and S65 should have 4M standard, would improve the traction.

Past winners of the Overall Winter Vehicle of the Year award include:

2004, Ford F-150; 2003, Volvo XC90; 2002, Ford Explorer; 2001, Audi allroad; 2000, BMW X5; 1999, Mercedes ML 430 and 1998, Mercedes ML 320.

Only one Audi

The 4Matic system is totally silent in it`s operation. It generates no more noise than the standard RWD system.

Proof? I'm sure it has to produce noise, although probably not loud enough that people would hear.

If you live in the desert, there's no need for 4matic. Choices are always good.

I had a chance to ride in a E350 4Matic. The system is absolutly silent!
An eletronic database operates this system. Its not old-fashion mechanics. You obviously have not experienced this system, therefore your thinking about old fashion mechanical noises, not so! You should take one for a test drive.

There are many AWD systems today which produce no mechanical noise.
