XM [Rumors] BMW X8 plans

The BMW XM is a full-size automobile manufactured in the United States by German marque BMW since 2022. It is a crossover SUV with a plug-in hybrid electric drivetrain, and is the second car developed entirely by BMW M, after the BMW M1 in 1978. Official website: BMW M

As long as the V8 lives on.

The V8 is not going anywhere. Its retirement is aparently set for 2028. 5 years after the V12 is put to rest. I would assume the M50i engines will switch to the I6 Hybrid debuting in the G70 7er, and the 4.4 V8 will live on the M cars until the next X5 M, X6 M and so on debut in the late 2020s.

Here is an article by Kacher from August 2019 but that has proven so accurate on everything, including the details about the X8 we are now discussing:

Was expecting this. Expect a flood of them now that the M4 cat is out of the bag. They have a new lignage in which to base all future renders on now. They will be wrong of course.

It seems to be an attempt to render an X8, obviously from an X6, incredible that the magazine pays an illustrator employee to do something so basic for a renowned publication, there being no previous antecedent any "designer" could fly their imagination but instead they do this

On the other hand the reflection of the time in which we live all the news are SUVs

It was confirmed already a few times (at least here) that the X8 would not be a coupefied X7 but have a profile more in line with X2. Aside from Georg Kacher not too many car journalists seem to be real insiders in the industry. Any idea when the first prototypes will be on public roads?

Seems to be adopting a similar front end to the new 7er and LCI X7, or at least using the same kind of camo. Really curious to see how it plays out for those models. But as far as the heavy camo goes, It does seem to adopt something similar to the X2's profile, interesting. But most of all, I thought this car was being developed exclusively by the M-division, so it seems that isn't the case? If it did I we would be getting a bespoke model, right?

Even though I like the X7's interior, it will be already on its LCI by the launch of this car. And that is something that happens to a lot of cars from different manufacturers..the car was recently revealed, but uses a interior that's already played out. Look at the X3/4..pre-historic interior and they didn't even get an LCI yet..also pretty much what happens to the GLS every generation given its market introduction right before the new S. Just because its the S that has to debut a new interior, the GLS gets the old theme and by the end of its life cycle, its getting real bad. I hope the X8 gets the new 7er interior, even if that means to delay its introduction, or better yet, a bespoke one, like the AMG cars from merc gets.

A big ass X2. Hopefully the 'XM' reported name is just as wrong as 'iX' apparently is for the production iNext. There needs to be a number in the name, and... XM is kind of already taken

Isn't it an EV?
Edit. No it isn't. It reads hybrid test vehicle. Obviously this white elements are meshes and the exhaust tips are hidden behind them.

I was expecting something similar to what Aston did with the DBX, but it has nothing to do with it, instead the aprouch that is clearly perceived is something similar to Land Rover's strategy, this looks like a kind of Land Rover Sport but giant.
In any case welcome, a totally new model is always nice, we'll see what turns out

I don’t really like the approach they went for, because it seems like a mixture of different, non fitting elements:

- The car has an X7 size, and overall profile but with a coupeish rear. The least coupeish cars are the Q8 and and Cayenne coupe, but they were executed very well. Here it seems like they just put a tilted window on the X7.

- It has a very defined direction from the front to the back, and it’s get higher and higher, this reminds me the Urus, but the Urus is a bit smaller and the whole car is sportier, so I don’t see why they make this profile. As Dalab pointed out it has a Range Rover Sport feel, but the RR Sport looks great because it’s way more balanced, it doesn’t have this huge difference between the front and rear higher above the wheels. I’m afraid the area surrounding the rear wheel will be spoiled here just like it got spoiled on the new 4 series.

Idk, I really hoped since the rumors of it being a dedicated M car, that it will be something like the RSQ8, which in my opinion is the best looking performance SUV now. Aston Martin did a great job with the DBX but it was not intended to show some aggressive performance capability, like an AMG 4 door or a dedicated M car should. This is like they couldn’t agree what to do but they did it.

I would hope that if they do implement a programme for the X8 that they keep the original Sport Activity Coupe outline to the X4 and X6.

Should an X8 be prothesised? I would hope it would follow the more upright X2.
Will it happen? The world is full of possibilities and they did announce that further luxury concepts are being conceived.

My Post from 2018.

X8...

.. so they were serious about that huh. Oh well, I'm sure BMW USA will find a way of shifting them...

So must say I also hoped for something more DBX or Urus so as to justify its’ M genes. This is indeed more high on its’ heels so RR Sport like which is a nice car but far from sporty..curious though how it turns out.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
