Well, it’s been quite a year for the BMW X range, the Germans rightfully calling 2018 ‘The Year of the X’. A lot of new models have come out throughout 2018 but the year started off with a rumor that some – including myself – simply wouldn’t believe: that BMW is pondering an X8 model. Time has passed and a lot of rumors started piling up as the reveal of the X7 came closer. Even our own sources inside Munich told us that there’s a lot of talk going on about such a prospect.

The rumormill churns out that G09 X8 could receive the green light and arrive in 2020. The new car, however, will not be a coupe version of the X7 but instead a more luxurious model, with a more bespoke finish for the discerning customer looking for the ultimate luxury. When unveiled it will also be more expensive than the X7 and will most likely become the priciest car with a BMW roundel on you can buy.

The G09 X8 will use the same underpinnings of the X7 but will offer seating for four, with individual seats in the back, kind-of like what we can already see on the X7. Whether a third-row of seats will be offered remains unknown right now, but according to our source the roofline will be different than on the X7, and it will not necessarily resemble the one of a Coupe. Therefore, just don’t expect an oversized X6 because that’s not what’s in the making here.

Luxury will be the aim here and that’s what customers will get, along with plenty of room in every seat. Engine choices will most likely be similar to the ones on the X7 but we’d definitely like to see a V12 under the hood of this model, especially the 610 HP 6.6-liter version from the M760Li. Chances of seeing that powerplant being used on the X8 are slim but that doesn’t mean we can’t still keep our fingers crossed.

Rumor: Is the BMW G09 X8 coming to the market?

The X8, if it ever becomes reality, should carry the internal code "G08", not "G09". Or am I wrong and the G08 is reserved for the ultra-luxury, four-seater X7 version and that is why the G09 is rumored for the X8 instead?

As I remember G08 is code for X3L for China.

I think it would be good to make a thread where we keep track of all BMW internal codes and keep it updated with the newest model codes, so we can all quickly see what car belongs to which code.

G09 ...

AutomotiveNews in March 2016 said:
BMW will sell two versions of its new X7 crossover -- the already-announced seven-seater and a $100,000-plus four-seater with a distinct look, said brand sales boss Ian Robertson.

It is coming. Just give 6/7-seat X7 and 4/5-seat Cullinan some break first to be properly launched & established. And then ... (y)

You mean you haven't got them all memorised? Pfft.. man, I thought you were cool.

Seriously though, the internet is awash with such lists... bimmerarchive.org/e-code/ is a good place to start as it links through to the individual model production codes.

I don't mind prepping such a post later on however. I'd be mortified to find I didn't have any memorised correctly!!

G09...X8. How sure are you that it's coming? For me, it just doesn't make sense.

G09...X8. How sure are you that it's coming? For me, it just doesn't make sense.

It makes sense to me for several reasons
The X7 is the most "square" of all X or if you want the most utilitarian and practical in terms of design, the X1,2,3,4,5, 6, all have to a greater or lesser extent a touch more "sport" than utilitarian, which is why in my opinion the X7 is the most indicated to have a more stylized big brother.

Another reason is that SUVs of all kinds and forms are in a boom that nobody would have thought a few years ago and sedan sales are so bad that they are canceling, traditionally untouchable brands like Ford - canceling all their sedans and Chevrolet / Cadillac - killing 6 models, some of them recently launched.

The platform is the same as the X7, (cost cutting ....)

And finally the insatiable affinity for super premium vehicles, the more expensive, crazy, more individual and less practical the better and the more they sell
Perfect moment..

Strict 4 seats, taper the roof line towards the rear a little, massage the front end a bit... put the V12 in it... bish bosh bash... X8.

This time I think (hopefully) that more than taper the roof line towards the rear a little, it is an opportunity to do something much more crazy and nice, taking advantage of the enormous length of the platform, something that makes the difference as a new reference and provokes the same as when we saw on the street the first X6, that was wow! a kick in the face, something that nobody else had until then

Early prototypes have already commenced tests @ Miramas, South France BMW private testing track. (y)

Hopes for winter test in Arjeplog soon? If so, then spy pics are imminent.

Also: some marketing activities going on regarding M60 trademark. I guess it's X8 / X7 related thing.

P.S.: the X8 is coming as performance SAV 4-seater exclusively. Planned model line: M45e Performance PHEV, M50d, M60i - numbered limited edition; available in selected markets only - , X8M.

So apparently the X7's likely V12 deprivation will be absolved by the X8 M60i
The X8M's V8 will have to be significantly more potent than the X6M's though.

Since the new X7 came out, there was a question that always stood out: is BMW considering an X8 as well? Yet to be officially confirmed, but it looks that the X8 will a bespoke luxury SAC with its own identity and not just an X7 Coupe. Earlier, we published the information that X8 prototypes are already being assembled at the BMW plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. So, it is safe to say that we will soon see the first test vehicles hitting streets all over the globe.

We also heard that the highly unique BMW X8 will come in three variants with at least one of them being a full-fledged X8 M model. The third member of the X8 family was rumored to be the brand’s first M Performance hybrid with the badge BMW X8 M45e attached to it.

Autobild has also just reported that the G09 X8 lineup will include an outrageous X8 M variant. To be powered by a consistently re-engineered 4.4-liter V8 engine, the high-performance luxury SAC could boast a staggering peak output of 700 hp or beyond, which decently renders it as the most powerful BMW M model in history.

We’ve also learned that almost certainly the X8 won’t take the shape of an X6 or X7, but rather have its own identify within the design language at BMW. Think along the lines of a new kidney grill design and overall shape. The X8 has always been rumored to be a more luxurious model, with a more bespoke finish for the discerning customer looking for the ultimate luxury.

The X8 is expected to become the priciest BMW model in history, with the entry-level price starting somewhere near EUR 150,000 (166,000 US dollars). Powertrains will most likely include petrol and plug-in hybrid configurations. Prices for the X8 M variant could possibly start at around EUR 180,000, which is nearly a hefty 200,000 US dollars.

We will likely see the BMW X8 family before 2022.

The X8M talk somehow makes me nervous about the M Supercar.

Wait a second....

We know BMW's working on a car like the M Next, and we know they've not ruled out the X8 as an M standalone model...

.. put the pieces together(as I did, using some incredibly advanced algorithyms..)

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
