Once upon a time the in-house performance studios of Germany's finest automakers wouldn't have anything to do with crossovers and SUVs. But several Mercedes-Benz G55 AMGs and BMW X6 Ms later, Audi's quattro GmbH is reportedly looking to join the fold with a pair of super-tuned Q5s.

The reports claim that Audi is preparing an SQ5 and an RSQ5, both backed by versions of the supercharged 3.0-liter V6 found in the latest S4 sedan, offering 333 horsepower in the SQ5 and as much as 408 in the RSQ5. Along with the engine upgrades, we could expect commensurate chassis, brakes and appearance enhancements as well.

For better or worse, these appear to be simple rumors at the time, but we'll be keeping our eyes open for more info, so stay tuned.

Then is it safe to assume that BMW is thinking of an X3M? After all, this is the dream of every engineer at M: To make another M SUV :D

^Actually I would love to see an X1 M. Either way an Q5 would be impressive. I'm already a fan of the regular model.

If that is the case then it is safe to say that we know who the new leader is:Audi.

Q5 S could happen but I'm doubtful we'll see any RS-models based on Audi's SUVs...

It's almost certain that the Q5 will receive the 3.0SC engine, the question is the state of tune it will be in. There is another two engines destined for the Q5 among other models, they are both bi-turbo diesels, a 2.0TTDi (200hp) and a 3.0TTDi (300hp), both these engines will spice things up and finally give BMW some competition.

Footie where have you got your information from regarding the diesel engines in particular the bi-turbo 2.0TDI 200HP?

I hear things. ;)

Ok, what I have heard is that until there was a DSG capable of coping with the levels of torque this engine would produce it have been kept from production until such times. But as the TT-RS is due to receive such a gearbox very soon so there is nothing stopping it's release now.

My guess is that the face-lift TT will receive this engine first or possibly the new A8.

I think BMW is also going to build a poor mans X5 M, the X3 M with the new M3 TT I6 engine slightly detuned, just as X5 M vs. M5.

With Porsche and Lamborghini both looking at adapting the Q5 platform to product their own versions of a high performance SUV I now wonder where this leave the possibility of Audi developing their own. A 400hp Q5 has already been developed but would either Porsche or Lambo be happy with such a car making it to the showroom at a price significantly less then either of theirs?

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
