RUF RUF reveals all-electric Porsche 911 concept

Ruf Automobile GmbH (stylized as RUF) is a German car manufacturer. Formerly using Porsche bodies in white to build cars, today they build vehicles on their own bodies and chassis. They also manufacture performance parts for various Porsche models, including the 911, Boxster, and Cayman. The company rose to fame when in 1987, its Porsche-derived CTR reached 211 mph, surpassing the Ferrari F40's claimed top speed of 201 mph. Official website: RUF Automobile

from German tuner RUF has reached a major milestone, with confirmation today that initial testing of a prototype 911 has been successful. RUF had originally planned to install its electric powertrain in its Cayman 3400K model but decided to go with the bigger body of the 997 911 due to better packaging and cooling of the required lithium-ion batteries.

The multiple battery arrays add an additional 550kg to the 911’s mass, bringing the total kerb weight of the electric version to just under 1,900kg. There are a total of 96 battery cells, all supplied by British company Axeon. Despite the substantial increase in weight, the electric motor they power, which is rated at 204 hp (150kW) and 480lb-ft (650Nm) of torque, can accelerate the vehicle from 0-100km/h in a brisk seven seconds and see it reach a top speed of 224km/h.

Now this is what I call a mark, 2 thumbs up for another great job from Ruf :eusa_clap ...!

Good start but 1900kg, Lol!! What a way to kill weight distribution and the entire character of the car.

You have to consider thought that this is the first attempt to make an electric 911, so don't expect it to be as good as the gasoline one, from day 1 ;)

Ruf, the specialist tuner famous for taking Porsches and making them even faster, has unveiled the eRUF - though to be the world's first all-electric 911.

Apart from the unusual slatted front and rear skirts, the eRUF looks much like any other 997-generation 911; but the flat six rumble has gone, replaced by, well, silence.

Of course, Tesla has already taken the 'first electric sports car' trophy with its excellent Roadster, so we already pretty much know what to expect, but the eRUF boasts some impressive stats nonetheless - as well as the kudos of being wrapped in a 911 body shell.

All 479lb.ft of torque is available from standstill, so response will be instant as the 150kW (201bhp) motor takes the eRUF from 0-62mph in 'under seven seconds'. In fact, Ruf claims the motor is so strong that the car can pull away in sixth gear.

Top speed is 160mph, and its range is between 155 and 200 miles, depending on how heavy your right foot is.

The eRUF uses lithium-ion batteries - the same as those used in the Tesla - which can be fully charged from empty in 10 hours, though they're in constant development and Ruf hopes to improve on that figure. Hopefully they'll get lighter too: the batteries are responsible for over a quarter of the eRUF's near two-tonne kerb weight.

Still, Ruf owner Alois Ruf happens to own a handful of emissions-free hydroelectric power plants, which means the eRUF can be charged using clean energy if you live nearby.

There's no word on whether the eRUF will make production yet, or what it will cost if it does, but it seems that a guilt-free Porsche is closer than you think.
