RUF RUF developing all-electric Porsche Cayman

Ruf Automobile GmbH (stylized as RUF) is a German car manufacturer. Formerly using Porsche bodies in white to build cars, today they build vehicles on their own bodies and chassis. They also manufacture performance parts for various Porsche models, including the 911, Boxster, and Cayman. The company rose to fame when in 1987, its Porsche-derived CTR reached 211 mph, surpassing the Ferrari F40's claimed top speed of 201 mph. Official website: RUF Automobile

One of the most talked about electric cars in recent times is the Lotus Elise based Tesla Roadster, a car that is quickly become more and more popular in performance circles because of its supercar performance and cutting edge technology. Well-established Porsche tuner RUF, a company that has been building cars for more than 60 years, is now poised to launch its own Tesla rival in the form of an all-electric Porsche.

RUF plans to unveil an all-electric version of its Cayman 3400K model (pictured) as early as next month, although the company is yet to announce production schedules or estimated prices. According to Auto Motor und Sport, the car will come with a 204hp (150kW) electric motor with 480lb-ft (650Nm) of instantaneous torque. Power will come from an array of lithium-ion batteries, with charging capable from an ordinary household power outlet.

New to the forums, and this particular announcement is what caught my attention. Kudos to Ruf and this may be my next Porsche in a few years when battery technology catches up. Alas, I still have hope that a diesel turbine powered engine connected to a generator is what powers electric motors in the near future rather than the plug-in recharging designs I've seen so far. Train engines have been diesel (piston) electric hybrids for decades and are very efficient. In either case, it's great to see Ruf in the game!
