Phantom Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé

Rolls-Royce has used the Phantom name on full-sized luxury cars and limousines since 1925, making it the longest used car model nameplate in automotive history. In the 20th century, the Rolls-Royce Phantom was a very low volume, hand-built limousine, which in its first four generations was custom coachbuilt to the customer's requests, and sometimes extravagant desires. Whilst automobile manufacturing over time became more mechanised and prolific, and vehicles from other manufacturers could be built in greater numbers and at lower prices, the Phantoms remained hand-built, and production of individual cars only began once the order was placed. The use of the name "Phantom" is a long tradition of naming Rolls-Royce models after ghosts or spirits.

Rolls-Royce has announced a Zenith special edition will serve as epilogue for the outgoing Phantom.

The seventh-generation Phantom hit the assembly line in Goodwood more than 13 years ago, so naturally Rolls-Royce is making all the efforts to replace it. However, the Phantom Coupe and Drophead Coupe will not receive a new generation as Rolls-Royce has decided the two body styles will be terminated for good.

To give these two Phantoms a proper send-off, RR is launching a Zenith special edition for the Coupe and Drophead Coupe limited to 50 units. Production of the Phantom duo will come to an end in November and the limousine will also reach the end of the line this year.

Rolls-Royce mentions the Zenith collection will be “the best of its kind; the highest standard achievable by which everything else is judged”, according to Director of Design, Giles Taylor. He goes on to specify the “Zenith will be the sum of all the best features of Phantom Coupé and Drophead Coupé, with a few surprises added.”

The Phantom Coupe and Drophead Coupe Zenith are going to feature unique instrument dials, a special finish for the Spirit of Ecstasy figurine, and a Tailgate Hosting Area. Moreover, these 50 cars will have laser-etched armrest showing the original launch locations of the 100EX in Villa D’Este and 101EX in Geneva. As a final touch, all 50 owners will also get a “money cannot buy” portable memento of the high-end vehicle.

As for the next-gen Phantom limousine, we know it will have an evolutionary design and will ride on a newly developed aluminum architecture set to underpin all Rolls-Royce models starting early 2018.

So what are we getting back in return when they discontinue the Drophead and coupe @EnI ? A roadster based on the Phgantom? Maybe even with the V16 we've heard so much about?
Still, a shame we're not getting a new Phantom coupe. That car is sick on several levels.

Also, what's a Tailgate Hosting Area?

Yeah, probably within a year. The car has roughly been twice as long on the market as all other cars, so it's about time..

The Wraith and Dawn will suffice until they consider what to do regarding the next generation. The popularity of the two is far too strategically important to diminish. They have sold with 90% of DropHeads being completely bespoke.
An exclusive RR Roadster for two as a limited model is still in discussion.
A tailgate hosting area fits onto the drop down tailgate so you can accommodate your RR picnic centre or even the cocktail/Champagne cooler with two individual folding seats so you can watch the Polo or Oilgarchs act out Fast and Furious type drifting in a field somewhere.

I think what will happen here is that they will replace the Phantom Drophead and Coupe with something that isn't called a Phantom, as with the Ghost, Wraith and Dawn. All Ghost derivatives but not labeled as such. It's a play on words IMO. NO way they're going to just let that market go IMO. If Bentley does a Mully based droptop Rolls will have to respond.

Rolls-Royce introduces the Phantom Zenith Collection

Time has come for the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé and Phantom Coupé to leave the stage, a moment that will be marked with a remarkable Bespoke Collection. The Phantom Zenith Collection – representing some of the very last Phantom Drophead Coupé and Phantom Coupé motor cars ever to be built, will serve as true collectors’ pieces. All 50 examples have already been commissioned by connoisseur customers who will add them to some of the world’s most significant luxury collections.

“As we begin to write a bold new chapter in Rolls-Royce history, I am delighted to present a Bespoke Collection that so elegantly celebrates two of the world’s rarest and most celebrated luxury goods: Phantom Drophead Coupé and Phantom Coupé. Phantom Zenith Collection motor cars speak of the marque’s unrelenting commitment to setting and advancing the standard by which all other luxury goods are judged.” Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

Phantom Zenith Collection serves to celebrate these two extraordinary motor cars with a suite of exquisitely executed bespoke pieces, designed to amplify the beauty and luxury of two of the rarest and best-loved luxury goods in the world.

In conceiving these two motor cars, the Bespoke design team dedicated themselves to understanding how both cars augment the lifestyles of the marque’s discerning customers. Every possible detail was considered. For example, the split-tailgate has been enhanced with the addition of a beautifully engineered companion to a perfect touring day’s picnic. A glass shelf, housed within the rear section of the tailgate can be effortlessly deployed serving as the perfect place from which to serve Champagne. No concession has been made to compromise. A champagne fridge, large enough to hold two standard bottles and eight Rolls-Royce glasses, occupies a large portion of the boot, while the comfort of those who wish to sit on the rear-tailgate is ensured with the use of the finest padded leathers.

Phantom Zenith Collection customers were invited to complete their collection in the finest style with the addition of a special Bespoke version of the Rolls-Royce Picnic Hamper. This unique accessory – created to add a touch of glamour to a day’s touring – will be personalized further to match the materials and colour palette of the customer.

On opening the coach doors, owners are greeted with an intricately executed nod to the history of these remarkable motor cars – beautiful laser etching to the armrest cappings. These stylishly express the locations of the global debut of the experimental version of each car (Villa D’Este on the shores of Lake Como for 100EX – Phantom Drophead Coupé’s forebear and Lake Geneva for the 101EX, the car that would become Phantom Coupé).

The central fascia drawer has been used to house a priceless memento signifying each car’s status as one of the very last. Upon opening, owners discover a removable polished aluminum case, laser engraved with their motor car’s unique identification number surrounded with a beautiful application of Best English Blacking – a technique most commonly associated with fine gun-making.

The speedometer, is presented in brushed steel – serving to draw the eye towards a key signifier of the car’s unique, effortless power delivery. The interior design color scheme further nods through the use of a highlight leather color for the front seats that harmonizes perfectly with a darker rear compartment. Finally, the Starlight Headliner, a design that made its debut on Phantom Coupé is given a subtle Bespoke treatment to reflect this, with the individually hand-woven stars clustered to the front and faded to the rear – bathing the driver and front passenger in a warm and inviting celestial glow.

In styling the exterior and interior color and materials palette, designers drew from Rolls-Royce history to create schemes inspired by some of the most celebrated Phantoms in Rolls-Royce history. The subtle contrast presented in the Madeira Red and Jubilee Silver Phantom Coupé, for example, is inspired by a 1930s Phantom II. A bolder, more defined contrast can be seen in timeless yet highly contemporary presentation of Midnight Blue and Artic White that echoes the genteel ambiance of a very special 1930s Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental, whilst a new glass clear coat has been engineered to enhance Phantom’s mirror-like shine.

The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2016 was the place to be to see Rolls-Royce's Phantom Zenith Drophead Coupe, which celebrates the retirement of the current Phantom generation.

On display alongside the BMW 2002 Hommage Concept, the British luxury drop-top benefits from a series of special features on top of the standard Phantom, which can also be found on the special edition coupe.

All cars will be dressed up to suit the needs of their customers and will get unique paint schemes, some of them inspired by the 1930s Phantoms, new glass shelf housed in the tailgate, laser engraved armrests with Villa d'Este in the Drophead and Lake Geneva in the Coupe versions, reminding where they were first seen in public, numbered plaque on the dashboard and brushed steel housed speedometer.

There are also a large fridge, which can store two champagne bottles, a picnic table, a special starlight headliner, hints of the Phantom Coupe Aviator Collection in the central tunnel, Blood-Orange tips on the instrument dials, aluminum-machined cup holders and "highly modern materials", as the manufacturer explains. All 50 examples of the Phantom Zenith have been already spoken for.
