I'll be back...

The prodigal son returns. As with the Biblical parable, a well-loved son (ably played in real life by Wolfgang Bernhard) leaves the comfort of home (Bernhard previously served as Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche's second in command) and embarks on a journey away from his family.

And lets bring back Brunno Sacco while we're at it!

M

Hmmm Wolfgang. He's a haloed name within MB, but his name was always around trouble as well, so I'm not so sure. He was responsible for w220 quality at launch for example. He also played a big part in the crap that went on at Chrysler. The cars released under his watch weren't exactly great.

Marcus, do you remember the top designers MB has hired recently? Wagoner apparently isn't going to play such an instrumental roll. I'm trying to think about what happened, but its not coming to me at the moment.

To be fair, Bernhard was assigned to fix the quality glitches of the W220 at the very last moment and he did a great job. He was the only man fit for the job and that cemented his reputation of "Mr Fix-it" within Mercedes Benz. That was also why he was sent to fix Chrysler's operations and production lines.................

What worries me is Bernhard's abrasive style.

Looks like Merc1/Marcus is too busy to answer?

Recently Karim Habib joined the Mercedes design team.

Before that, it was Joel Piaskowski, from Hyundai.

After becoming head of Mercedes design in mid 2008, Gordon Wagener, who was responsible for the interior of your E350 CDI (you probably know), the SUVs, and the Ocean Drive concept, also expanded the design studio in California, and moved it from Irvine into the larger facility in Carlsbad. It's now headed by Joel Piaskowski.

And a new studio was opened in Beijing, which is headed by Olivier Boulay, who also heads Mercedes Yokohama studio.

Interior design at Mercedes often becomes inspired from the work done at the Mercedes Advanced Design Studio in Como. Here's a link to a recent paper given by Francesca Sangalli, who joined the team in Como a few years ago. This was mentioned in the CLS discussion recently:
