Report: Maybach Brand faces wind down

They gotta stick a cork in that dated and hideous thing. Or at least, take the plunge and make one that uses a newer platform. I'd rather have a W221 over a Maybach. Fancy luxury decadence, and amenities aside, it's a better vehicle.

I'd take any of RR's offerings out right now over one personally.

Report: Maybach will soldier on, gain hybrid

We've all but assumed Maybach was a goner. With the economic downturn and sales hovering around the 300-unit mark annually, Mercedes-Benz' rebadged uber-lux brand makes a hard business case for itself. However, Automobile reports that Maybach may be down, but it's not out, and a range of new products are on the way.

With the S-Class due to be replaced in 2012, the range-topping Benz will offer up its revised platform for five new Maybach models. The standard 57 and 62 will benefit from upgraded sheet metal, interiors and electronics, while a CLS-like four-door "coupe" will be added to the line-up along with the oft-rumored long-wheelbase convertible – a sort of mash-up between the 62 Laundaulet and Mercedes' Ocean Drive concept from 2007.

Despite M-B's ongoing issues with CAFE standards, motivation will continue to be provided by the same 6.0-liter V12 powering current Maybachs, although horsepower is expected to rise, torque output could crest 850 pound-feet and Mercedes' seven-speed automatic will be part of the package.

More intriguingly, Automobile says that with the new transmission, an electric motor could be fitted, boosting output by 20 hp and allowing the massive sled to drive in full electric mode for up to 10 miles. There's also talk of a new nine-speed automatic transmission being fitted and fuel economy rising by around 25% – so figure around a 2-3 mpg improvement for both the 545-hp and 630-hp versions.

In order for Maybach to survive, it has to be more than just a reworked S-Class and to that end, an insider told Automobile that future models will be "jewels on wheels and at last worthy of the brand." We shall see...

That is just Autoblog referring to the original article on Automobile that was already posted here by Marcus. ;)

Yes, that is what most Automobile websites do and try to add their own spin. Thanks for taking the time to point that out!

So do you feel they added something substantial to the original article? I don't, therefore I wanted to point out that the original source was already posted in this thread. No need to get worked up.

If they could make the exterior design to be something that stands out yet classic and luxrious, they will have a good rival for Rolls. Maybach's downfall of the current version is the exterior design.

I've riden in a 57 and the interior is absolutely amazing, there is no rival, but the exterior leave a lot to be desired.

Interior is the best when it comes to confort and gadget but style wise, while not ugly like the exterior, it suffers from the same complete lack of character.

Next time just PM me to avoid the back and forth, which adds nothing to the topic at hand.

Exactly! It more of an exterior issue with the Maybach. It seem so low key compared to it's competitors. I will say that this was produced before the Rolls Phantom and Bentley Mulsanne, so they did have an advantage. I just would have like to see a dramatic change in the facelift version, but it's almost like they didn't even try.

If they do produce a new model, it would be nice if they distance it from the S-class look and make it look more sophisticated and attractive. If they don't, I have a feeling that sales will stay the same.

I thought the Excelero would have thought them something.

Just spotted one in traffic this AM, a pearl white 57S on 101 southbound from San Francisco. Looked majestic.

Is there any word on Maybach using Aston Martin to help design the next generation Maybach (If they decide to produce it)?

I think that deal fell through. It would have been really something, but knowing Mercedes they probably wanted too much control over Aston-Martin and Aston said "uh no". Imagine Mercedes' engineering and Aston's design for a Maybach, that would have been Bentley's and Rolls' nightmare.

I won't be so sure considering how boring and similar their recent cars are.

I am hearing that the Coupe will debut in Paris as a Concept , with rumours that both Smart and Maybach are debuting Concepts in Paris.

Especially Smart where World-wide sales have all but collapsed.

The facelift comes soon:

A total of 5,800 smart fortwo were sold last month (August 2009: 7,000) representing a decrease of 18 percent. However, the company expects demand for the innovative two-seater to pick up again, when the new generation of the smart fortwo will be launched on the market on October 2nd.

Yeah, the FL of the century... They didn't change any piece of the exterior, only colour coding some and adding optional LEDs...

I'm eagerly waiting ti see what Maybach has in store, hope it's not yet another slightly upscaled Mercedes...

Maybach needs to develop its own styling, very different from Mercedes', or they're gonna continue the agony.

Maybach has long been assumed to be at death's door. The brand is actually profitable on paper since the ramp-up investment has been fully absorbed by Daimler AG. Still, at a homeopathic 200 to 300 units a year, it's hardly worth the continued cost of a special distribution and service network. It doesn't help matters that current Maybachs are based on the previous-generation S-class -- not exactly state-of-the-art. Disillusioned and lacking a clear strategy, previous brand leadership was very close to putting Maybach out of its misery.

But now there's new leadership and new hope. Daimler board member Joachim Schmidt, recently brought back from the Far East to run Daimler's sales and marketing, sees plenty of new opportunities for ultraluxury cars in China and North America, along with the Middle East and Russia. Additionally, there's an obvious platform for Maybach's revival in the form of the next all-new S-class, which debuts in 2012.

The extended Maybach range likely will be comprised of five models, including a four-door coupe and a long-wheelbase convertible (a spiritual successor to the 2007 Mercedes Ocean Drive concept). To keep things relatively simple, all Maybachs will be powered by the same engine: the faithful 6.0-liter V-12 used in Maybach's current 62S and Zeppelin editions. Now putting out a brutal 850 lb-ft of torque, it will be mated to a seven-speed automatic that can accommodate an electric motor good for a little over 20 hp and a zero-emission range of approximately ten miles. In a second step, Maybach will almost certainly switch to an even more efficient nine-speed automatic and offer a more advanced hybrid. The "base" engine delivers about 545 hp, while the S version is good for some 630 hp. Sources claim a 25 percent improvement in European fuel economy testing, but given the current car's abysmal 12 mpg EPA combined rating, these still won't be any shade of green.

A broader approach to the full-size luxury-car segment is essential to fund the second chapter of the Maybach adventure. The next S-class, which itself will be available in no less than six variants, should be able to battle everything from the Hyundai Equus to the Maserati Quattroporte. It will be up to Maybach to compete in Bentley Mulsanne and Rolls-Royce Phantom territory. According to one insider, future Maybach vehicles will not be mere exercises in badge-engineering but "jewels on wheels and at last worthy of the brand."

Time will tell.

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
