Report: Maybach Brand faces wind down

five or six S-Class models? First article says 5, second 6??? ;)

Model line-up

There will be five models in the range: a four-door saloon, two extended-wheelbase cars, a short-wheelbase coupé and, for the first time, a soft-top convertible.

The standard and long-wheelbase saloons are due for launch next year, the extra-long- wheelbase Pullman and coupé in 2013 and the convertible in 2014. The Pullman will satisfy demand in China for an even roomier car than today’s LWB S-class.

The coupé will replace the current CL. It will form the basis of an all-new S-class cabriolet, with an advanced fabric hood previewed on the Ocean Drive 2006 concept car, and targeted at the Bentley Continental GTC.

"Plans are already in place to fill the void left by the axing of the Maybach 57 and 62 with the next-generation S-class, which will be offered in three wheelbase variations and six different body styles, including a top-of-the-range S600 Pullman.”

I'd bet that Daimler could sell a $300K car with the "Mercedes-Benz" name on it before they could sell one with "Maybach".

The M-B name has far more cache than Maybach. Props to Zetsche for FINALLY making a decision on this and doing what's best: Killing off the dead weight and investing the efforts into capitalizing on the Mercedes-Benz name. If they do it right, they will reaffirm the fact that even though BMW and Audi can outsell Mercedes in the mass-produced aspect, M-B will always be considered higher end/higher cache cars, and people will justify spending more on them.

It seems MB is preparing a super S-Class, named S600 Pullman, and another sportier variant, a 4 door coupe, based on the W222 as well. Excellent news IMO, since Maybach meant nothing for the auto industry, except failure and weirdness.

:bowdown::icondrool:usa7uh::eusa_clap ---------> good night -.-

I´m sorry but the Maybach we see today is far behind everything else. Bentley, RR, or even some MBs are far ahead. It was a wrong idea to come back with the brand and I think MB is doing the right thing.

How do you plan to name the new Super S-Class that replaces the Maybach?

That's still undecided. In the past the 600 Pullman for example was an absolute icon. That could be an option.

Design aside..MM ain't lacking in ANYTHING else and if u think i'm wrong then clearly u haven't been ridden or been inside one.

It's sad and an admission of defeat for Maybach, But I like the fact that Zetsch understands the Mercedes brand so deeply, and understands that there is absolutely not reason why it can not take Rolls and Bentley head on. This is what separates Mercedes from Audi and BMW, the very top end. There is no way Audi and BMW will move into this market. Well at least not for a long long time.

Bring on the Mercedes super saloons, convertibles and coupes!

That is one soild fact right there.History alone is enough for MB to go comfortably head on with RR and B.

Now this was to be expected really. Now Mercedes can fully develop the S-Class platform to compete with the usual suspects all the way up to the Ghost/Phantom/Mullsanne. Hell the old 600s where superior cars, easily out performing and out engineering anything from England, those relics. I can see a new 600/Pullman or something totally different to take on the upper end of the market. This is truly the best decision for the long run. Lets just face it, Mercedes doesn't do other brands well, and they're just getting back to effectively managing their own brand so this is the way to go, especially if AM isn't going to play a part. The single biggest problem for Maybach was that in order for it to work, MB had to build a better car than the S-Class I just don't think they can do that, on a physiological level. With "Maybach" gone they can build the super S-Class they've always wanted and call it just that an S-Class. This time around when you see a mere S550 you will know that it belongs to a much more expensive and prestigious family of vehicles that smacks A8s and 7-Series' around by day and rubs bumpers with Phantoms and Mulsannes at night. Forget the Ghost, it is already gone once the next S-Class appears since it uses the 760Li as a base. This is truly great news in the long run. The V12 has to live now for sure.

I just hope they do something truly bespoke with the S-Class platform, a 4-door coupe would be stunning. The CL/S Cabrio is another one that should have happened years ago, especially with Bentley about to stoop lower with the GTC by offering a "V8" entry level version.

A 4-door convertible might be too much from an engineering standpoint, but it would be a stunner. I can't wait to see what they're going to do now. Imagine a 250K S-Class and what that would be like.

I dunno who annoys/repulses me more, Bird or Khaled's large ass standing right next to him.

Which brings another point against Maybach. It seems most "Ultra Rich People" have moved way past the brand, those who buy for quality, etc. The seemingly ONLY group of Ultra Rich who flock to the Maybach are seemingly Rappers, and even then, many of the less respected Rappers. Talk about negative publicity. Rolls and Bentley are far better balanced. They naturally have the blingy Rap Culture flocking, which gives the cars "cool points" for some younger kids, etc. gives the cars a boastful "strive to get it" image right there in Pop-Culture-Dome, yet they still maintain a customer base and values that can attract customers with opposite personalities from the "Ultra Rich" side of the road.

Are you implying that there are respected rappers?

Lol. Yes, but let's just say you probably aren't gonna hear them much on the radio, and I'll bet that most of 'em aren't parading around in Maybach's throwing money out the Convertible roof. :D

How can this incoherent sub human being acquire such a huge amount of money?

OK, Maybach is gone ... Finally!

And I cheer the Daimler's decision to (at least trying to) fight entry Bentley & Rolls-Royce models with the Mercedes-Benz brand. It's a logical move - to make MB more special & upscale brand than Audi & BMW. And MB can even achieve that goal - since it has much greater cache (when it comes to luxury).

Although I doubt MB (even in Pullman 600 edition) will ever be able to reach Mulsanne / Phantom territory.

But with Maybach gone MB can introduce various models above S-class - the ones once reserved for "baby Maybach" family. And Pullman 600, CL cabrio & CL 4dr coupe sound like a nice edition to S SWB, S LWB & CL 2dr coupe. And this MB's step into entry ultraluxury segment will definitely hurt Bentley Flying Spur / GT (not so much the Ghost since it's much more expensive car).

But still ... VAG & BMW can still push Bentley & RR higher, and introduce models above A8 & 7er (like A9 & 8er families), to fight expanded S class. And Pullman 600 may force especially Audi to introduce XLWB A8 - at least for Chinese market.

Actually VERY sad that a true German brand with such an interesting and rich history has to be put back in the "gone but not forgotten" bin:crying6cc

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
