Emira [Report] Lotus Emira (type 131)

The Lotus Emira (codenamed "Type 131") is a sports car manufactured by the Lotus Cars. It is intended to be the firm's final vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine.
I do think that it's a bit unfair to compare the two, given Porsche's pedigree, resources, and the fact that the GTS is the ultimate iteration on quite a fine car––whereas the Lotus is still in development. However, I also think that the praise for Emira's looks/design is overstated, and I am completely turned off by its curb weight. A Lotus has to be light or it becomes indistinguishable characterwise from the competition, as we see in these videos. A pity, truly.

But the GTS is the Evora's closest competitor! Should we not compare cars unless they are designed with the exact same budget, development timeline, and engineering targets?

I agree that the weight is a bit of a disappointment but very few people care about curb weight, more care about curb appeal.

EVO UK didn't like it on the track, this will turn into every posers new ride this summer across Europe.

Anglesey Lap Time:

Porsche 992 GT3 Touring (Manual) - 1:13.5 (P Zero Corsa)
Lotus Emira (V6) - 1:18.5 (MPS Cup 2)

So not much faster than 10 year old base 981 which was probably not on cups?

Porsche Cayman (981)1:18.9

From an aesthetic point of view, it’s a league above the GTS. While the Porsche looks like a….Cayman, the Lotus has the design of a super car that’s twice the money,

LOL, take of your British glasses please.

This Lotus looks once more like a f'ing cheap kit car. Terrible. Truly UGLY.

It’s not perfect but an alternative worth considering over a GTS.

GTS? A 911 992 GTS?

I mean, really? No person outside of England is even going to consider this car, or even know it exists. Lotus is a dead brand, they sell like a 1000 cars a year. Matterless and meaningless, kept alive by British fanboys on the internet and patriotic car press.

It is what it is.

I'd take a 10 year old base 981 over this any day. Emira looks like it's been in an accident on the production line.

Cause of the hood vents? To me, at first glance, the vents look like the car is been in a fender bender and is now bend. I do like the looks otherwise.

Porsche Cayman (981)1:18.9

If I am not mistaken, the 981 tires (depending on size) were fitted with Bridgestone Potenza S001 / Goodyear Eagle F1 / Dunlop Sport Maxx GT / Pirelli P Zero.

Cup 2 was not available for the Cayman back then. The only two cars that came fitted with Cup 2's and N-Rated were 918 Spyder and 991.1 GT3.

Mostly the hood vents yeah. Every YT thumbnail I see makes me think it's been in a crash.
And upon further inspection, the proportions are awful too. The car is too tiny for what it wants to be (a wannabe Ferrari).

o_O

That's a dry lap I assume...? Also, who was the driver?

Besides the funny bonnet vents which make it look like its been bent in a minor bash, I feel the Emira looks great for what it is. Certainly not a kit car vibe by any stretch.
I feel that Lotus ought to do well with this car - the manual, supercharged V6 in touring spec looks to be the sweet spot. I certainly would not say no to one as, judging from the videos, the reception has been very favourable. Would I buy one over a Cayman GTS 4.0? Different story altogether...

The prelude to the "porous design" that is featured on the Eletre-and will be featured on further upcoming electric Lotus offerings as well. Acquired taste, perhaps-but I like it. The Type 131 Emira looks cool methinks. The Eletre is breathtaking IMHO. And I can't wait for the presentation of the Type 133 4 door electric GT.

Dry as a bone

Note: Tires used in the test was Goodyear Eagle F1, my mistake. I'm uploading tons of stuff and mixed up tire names.

No problem. Still, this means it was the Sport spec. Eagle F1 Supersports are about the same as PS4S/PZ4s when it comes to track performance, so the time is still kinda bad. 2.5s slower than 992 Carrera S on PZ4s and only 0.5s faster than the base 981 Cayman on PSSs!

They're do well in their local Shire, Lotus sells less cars per year than Porsche per day.

Sorry mate, but I think you need new glasses altogether...

Would take it over any Cayman, that includes the overpriced boyracer GT4 RS.

Like many others I would also have prefered that the Emira was lighter, after all lightness was the trademark of Lotus. I remember I was very disapointed when the Evora was launched, it weighed the double of a Elise and the same as a Boxter/Cayman, so with this the lightweight period of Lotus ended. Now they will also make a SUV…
If Alpine is able to make a superb 1100 kg sportscar, why can’t Lotus…?

Funnily enough, Gordon Murray recently announced GMA is working on two electric SUVs - one of which they might even manufacture themselves. Although I do believe they will hit the weight targets for the T.50 and the T.33, it seems that they are equally as happy to work on some battery powered pigs as well (although they, of course, same as Lotus, claim that the SUVs will be much lighter than the competition  ).

I think it's time to abandon the romantic idea that companies have "values" - they will just make whatever makes them the most money.

You're right: I'm not saying that the comparison is unfair altogether, but I do think that Porsche is in a league of its own nowadays. And I do insist that Emira's design won't age well; too much of a mainstream beauty tbh. Importantly, I'm fanatical about Chapman philosophy of "Simplify, then add lightness." The Emira feels like a betrayal from that perspective.

Yes, corporations don't have values. But they should stay loyal to their brands to the extent possible, especially when the brand's engineering identity is as iconic as Lotus's. Lotus can't and won't keep up with the likes of Porsche and Ferrari if it goes mainstream. The lightness of a Lotus, its pure handling prowess, are what attract (or did attract) customers to the brand.
