Any idea when we can expect mild hybrids in MQB platform cars? Is it likely to be a 1.4TSI + 54hp motor replaing the 2.0 TSI?

New 2019 SEAT Leon confirmed with plug-in hybrid coming in 2020

Next SEAT Leon due in showrooms next year, with a plug-in hybrid variant planned.

SEAT has revealed that the next-generation Leon will be in showrooms next year, and will be one of the Spanish brand's first electrified models.

The fourth-generation Leon will form a key part of a major product offensive from SEAT – the most intensive rollout of new or heavily revised models in the Spanish company’s history. It's also a key car from an electrification point of view, and a plug-in hybrid variant has been confirmed for release in 2020.

Dr Matthias Rabe, the firm’s board member with responsibility for research and development, told Auto Express last year: “It’s our biggest push ever. We’ve had Ateca, now Arona, the renewal of Ibiza, the facelifted Leon. But it’s only now that we really accelerate; over the next three years we’ll see six or seven new models, and most of them will be totally new.”

The next generation of Leon will continue to be based on the VW Group’s MQB platform technology – the same chassis parts that underpin the current car as well as the Skoda Octavia and VW Golf. However, we can expect SEAT to stretch the Leon’s wheelbase by a few millimetres in a bid to boost rear cabin space. Three-door variants will be dropped, with only five-door models and ST estates making showrooms.

The engine line-up will look familiar, too, with 1.0 and 1.5-litre petrols, and a 1.6-litre diesel. It is also likely to get at least some of the electronics architecture from the forthcoming Mk8 Golf – allowing the potential for a 48V-based mild hybrid, although this may arrive later in the car’s life. The plug-in arriving 2020 will be able to travel 31 miles on electric power only.

The overall profile of the third generation of Leon will remain similar – although as previewed by our exclusive images, it’s likely to get a revised front-end appearance. “The styling of the car is not a revolution but it’s a big evolution,” said Rabe. “You will be able to see that it is a Leon; you won’t be able to mistake it for any car in the segment. But that is what we’ve been working on, across our range; now we have a clear, consistent product design identity.”

SEAT EVs on the way

Alongside the Leon PHEV, SEAT has confirmed that a bespoke, all-electric vehicle will arrive in 2020, which is likely to take on the SEAT Born name when it arrives.

Speaking to Auto Express last year, SEAT head of design Alejandro Mesonero admitted that the vehicle had been signed off. Mesonero directly compared it with the Leon – a further hint that the two cars have a similar bodystyle.

“The process for the MEB car was actually quite quick,” Mesonero said. “It is clear to see it is a SEAT. I’ve been enjoying looking at the MEB car sitting beside the next Leon in the studio, in fact. The EV sits a bit taller, because of the battery location in the floor, and it’s different from it because of the packaging.”

SEAT also has ambitious plans for its recently spun-off Cupra brand – starting with the new hot Ateca. And as Auto Express revealed back in August, the firm is considering badging its high-performance models as Cupras in their own right. Rabe declined to comment on this speculation, but he said: “It’s clear that Cupra is not just limited to Leon. There are lots of people in our organisation supporting it.”

Looking good already.
One of the first models from the Volkswagen Group’s portfolio to use the MQB platform back in 2012, the third-generation SEAT Leon is very close to its retirement. The Spanish company is busy working on its successor and these new spy photos confirm the engineers are progressing rapidly with the development of the vehicle.

About two months ago, we spied the new Leon for the first time, but back then the prototype was heavily camouflaged and featured fake plastic body panels, a set of auxiliary lights at the front, and weirdly disguised interior. This new prototype sheds most of the additional panes to reveal much more of the hatchback’s actual shape.

The overall proportions of the vehicle appear to be almost unchanged over today’s model, but most of the shapes, as far as we can judge, are sharper and more aggressive. In fact, the new Leon will be a tad larger than its predecessor with a couple of inches added to the wheelbase. This, in turn, should free up more room inside the cabin and provide a larger cargo area.

dropped the three-door version of the Leon and when the new generation model debuts we will see a five-door hatch and a wagon. According to some sources, a Leon-based crossover is also in the cards set to be positioned slightly below the current Ateca.

As far as the engine lineup is included, probably the most important novelty will be the addition of a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Leon is expected to become the brand’s first electrified model offering a pure electric driving range of about 31 miles (50 kilometers).

Reichel render is not accurate, parts of the render do not even match the prototypes, it's just an Ibiza, leon side windows, the idiot didn't even change the window profile on the other side from the ibiza, skoda lower bumper and tarraco grill/headlights. Autobild going down the drain with their renderings.

2020 SEAT Leon Rendering Sees Into The Future

2020 SEAT Leon Rendering Sees Into The Future

This is what SEAT is trying to hide with the camouflaged prototypes.
SEAT has been testing the next-generation Leon since May this year and we’ve spied a number of prototypes, giving us a pretty clear idea of the new vehicle’s shape. We’ve tasked our talented artists to virtually remove the camouflage of the trial vehicles and you can see the result of that striptease in the gallery below.

If the actual car is anything close to that rendering, we will be dealing with one of the prettiest cars in this segment on the European market. Shorter overhangs in combination with longer wheelbase should give the new Leon a more mature and dynamic look, as well as significantly more room in the cabin. Add to this many more customization options and new technologies, and you’ve got a pretty good all-rounder and a strong Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf competitor.

SEAT is set to preview the new Leon with a concept during next year’s Geneva Motor Show in March 2019. The production variant should follow later the same year, quite possibly in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Spanish automaker probably won’t sell it as a three-door hatch as demand for such vehicles is very low, but some reports say a Leon-based crossover is in the cards.

Seats and Skoda designs are becoming too predictable. Basically the head and tail lights get thinner and more angular with every new model.

2021 Cupra Leon Rendering Takes After The Spy Shots

We've spotted the hot hatch covered in camo and now we're attempting to see what was hiding underneath the disguise.
Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo is kicking things up a notch in terms of high-performance offerings by turning Cupra into a standalone brand. For this reason, the next generation of the sporty compact will eschew the SEAT branding altogether to go by the name of Cupra Leon, complete with the inverted triangle logo in copper created specifically for the newly formed subdivision.

We spotted a heavily disguised prototype of Spain’s feisty hatch at the beginning of June, and based on those spy images, Motor1.com’s artist in charge of rendering future products has now imagined the Honda Civic Type R rival. Looking as sharp as you’d expect a SEAT model to be, the Cupra Leon digital design exercise takes after the Formentor concept from where the C-segment performance model will adopt the plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Indeed, the Cupra Leon has already been confirmed to switch to a 1.4-liter TSI engine that’ll work together with an electric motor to develop a combined output of “up to 245 horsepower and less than 50 g/km of CO2 emissions.” It’s a statement made earlier this year by Cupra boss Wayne Griffiths in an interview with Auto Express magazine.

Yesterday, our spies caught the Cupra Leon ST flaunting a quad exhaust system hinting at the possibility of a new R version with all-wheel drive. If that’s the case, the speedy wagon will likely up the power ante once again to about 300 horsepower, although the identity of the engine is not known. A plausible scenario would be the familiar 2.0 TSI with or without electrification.

Hatch Or Wagon?

Getting back to the adjacent rendering, it only shows the exterior of the new Leon in Cupra attire. However, spy shots from early July allowed us to take a peek inside the regular Leon’s cabin featuring a tablet-style infotainment sticking out from the center console in the same vein as on the mechanically related VW Golf VIII and Skoda Octavia IV.

When are we expecting to see it? Considering SEAT has yet to reveal the normal Leon IV, it likely means we’re at least a year away from checking out its Cupra counterpart.

Not the leon, that is the Tarraco FR PHEV interior

New product presentations by SEAT and SKODA are usually on my radar. Their "value for money" attributes make them, for me, the most plausible VAG brands.
