Volvo has always been my favourite alternative to the big German 3 (Boris Becker, Steffi Graf and Das Grose Shiza ) they have really advanced themselves since the early 2000's and seem to get better and better. They just need to get their big saloon the S80 to drive like a luxury car then it will be a fantastic rival for A6, 5 series and E class!

They need a new version of the 850 T5-R. That was a monster! I'd love to see a new sporty Estate like that again with the new design language as seen on the new XC90. This V90 could just be it if they play their cards properly.

That 850 T5 (and T5-R) estate were fantastic cars, very popular in South Africa in the 90's when they came out, I think this was the car that put Volvo on the right map to success. It made people like station wagons for not just been people carriers but sexy and fast movers as well.

The news isn’t a shocker as last November, Volvo had indian autos blog that its new plant in Daqing, China will rollout “all new premium sedan” based on the SPA, though a timeline or market name was not mentioned.

Does this mean, the new S90/V90 will not be produced in Sweden?

2016 Volvo S90 spied, it has Thor's hammer headlights

Since Volvo presented the world with the all-new XC90, the Swedish automaker hit the jackpot. The exterior styling, the oily bits and bobs, as well as the welcoming cabin design are bang on, translating to huge demand for the all-wheel drive mid-size SUV. Without a shadow of a doubt, the upcoming 2016 Volvo S90 sedan has lots of chances to enjoy the same commercial success as the XC90.

A faithful reader of the Dutch automotive publication AutoJunk.nl captured the 2016 Volvo S90 testing in The Netherlands and good golly, it's got the same Thor's Hammer headlights as the XC90. This bit of news doesn't come as a surprise though because Volvo stated that the replacement for the S80 would be underpinned by the same SPA (Scalable Platform Architecture) that debuted on the XC90.

Other than the distinctive daytime running lights, the S90 test mule carries a prominent front grille design sans the diagonal slat with the Volvo badge featured in the middle. Even the bumper design and the lower radiator grille hark back to the XC90, but the hood appears to be a flatter affair than that of the SUV.

Despite the swirly camouflage on top of which sits black-painted padding, it's easy to tell that the roof rails are exaggerated, as is the hump on top of the trunk door. While the dashboard design is impossible to see from AutoJunk.nl's set of four spy photos, the driver's moustache is downright groovy!

Jokes aside, those headrests feature the same design as those that equip the XC90. This makes us presume that the cabin design, including the thumping great tablet-like infotainment system, will be remarkably similar to the interior of the Volvo XC90.

To be built at Volvo's Daqing plant in China, the 2016 Volvo S90 is believed to debut at next year's Detroit Auto Show with 2-liter turbo petrol and diesel engines. AWD could be offered as an option on the D5 and T5 engines while a 2016 Volvo S90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid could come to fruition as well.

You can actually see the Glasshouse quarter light through the camouflage and it looks exactly like this.

Hopefully they look like the Coupe and Shooting Brake concepts and a perfect accompaniment to the XC90. Although I do have a fondness for the S60 and V40 they have a distinctive Swedishness to them. I cannot wait to drive the XC90.
