M5 Record-topping BMW M5 bows out

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M

The BMW M5’s five-year production run has ended after a record-breaking 20 548 units were built in that time.

A further 1 025 Touring models were created from 2007. Both sedan and wagon models were powered by a 373-kW five-litre V10 engine that regularly raked in accolades in the annual Engine of the Year awards.

The first M5 was created in 1984 when the performance car designed for use in daily traffic conditions was credited with creating a new vehicle segment.

The fifth generation M5 was the most technologically potent model to date, with its array of state-of-the-art equipment including an engine speed-dependent M differential lock, electronic damper control and the recalcitrant seven-speed sequential M transmission. On-point driver assistance systems included adaptive headlights and a head-up display specific to the M car.

The next-generation M5 will not be fitted with a ten-cylinder engine. It will, instead, gain a twin-turbo V8 powerplant.

Munich. After being on sale on the global automotive market for five successful years, the BMW M5 has ended its production lifespan with a new record high. The BMW M GmbH produced a total of 20,548 of the charismatic high-performance sports car featuring a V 10-cylinder power unit. The BMW M5 Saloon is accountable for 19,523 of these, with the BMW M5 Touring, which was first launched in 2007, contributing a further 1025 units towards the overall result. This means that even the production figures of the predecessor model, which was manufactured for a period of six years, have been surpassed. The BMW M GmbH sees this record result as a further chapter in the success story of a remarkable automobile, which reaches back as far as the year 1984. 26 years ago we saw the launch of the first BMW M5 – this also marking the birth of the high-performance saloon segment.

Drive and suspension technology inspired by motor sports combined with the spaciousness and travelling comfort of a midrange saloon car: When the first BMW M5 was launched, this concept brought about an entirely new vehicle category. With M-specific aesthetics and thanks to uncompromising premium quality, the new model was at the same time the first high-performance sports car designed for use in everyday traffic conditions. With the fifth generation of the BMW M5, this combination achieved a level of fascination it had never reached before. A V10 high-revving 373 kW/507 bhp engine, sequential M transmission Drivelogic with seven gears and Launch Control for maximum acceleration from a standstill, variable, engine speed-dependent M differential lock as well as model-specific suspension technology, including Electronic Damper Control (EDC) and a compound brake unit, guarantee the BMW M5’s outstanding performance characteristics. High-quality equipment features, which include innovative driver assistance systems such as Adaptive Headlights and M-specific Head-up Display, underline its premium character.
As an all-round athlete, dominating both the highly dynamic sprint and longer distances, the latest generation, too, is capturing a unique position within the competitive environment. In 2007, the saloon, which was also dubbed by the media as a “businessman’s express”, was joined by the BMW M5 Touring. This model offered a second body variant that enriched the character of the sports car, which was unrestrictedly suitable for everyday use, with additional facets.

The USA also proved to be the most crucial sales market for the fifth generation of the BMW M Saloon. 8,800 vehicles were sold in the United States. Ahead of the German market (1,647 units), Great Britain and Ireland developed the greatest demand on the European continent with 1,776 vehicles sold. Japan (1,357 units) takes fourth place among the most significant markets for the BMW M5 Saloon, followed by Italy (512). The BMW M5 Touring enjoyed the greatest popularity in Germany (302 units), Great Britain and Ireland (208) and in Italy (184).

A distinctive feature of both models is the 5-litre, ten-cylinder engine with a high-revving concept. The power unit, which was conceived using comprehensive expertise derived from motor sports, develops maximum output at an engine speed of 7,750 rpm, disclosing its unique character in particular through enormous pulling power that remains available across a remarkably broad speed range. Its exceptional position has been underlined by numerous awards. For example, in the years 2005 and 2006, the V10 engine seized overall victory twice in succession at the “Engine of the Year Awards” as well as first place during each of the two following years in the engine category exceeding a cubic capacity of 4 litres. Even after completion of the BMW M5’s production lifespan, the 10-cylinder engine continues to fascinate in a very special way. The exceptional power unit with identical power output and performance characteristics is currently featured in both the BMW M6 Coupe and the BMW M6 Convertible. The limited BMW M6 Competition Edition offers a particularly elegant way of expressing the high-performance coupe’s superior dynamics. A unique BMW Individual Frozen Grey paint finish and an individual interior design provide the coupe with an exclusive high-quality ambience. The BMW Individual full Merino leather trim is available either in black with light grey contrast seams or in the bi-colour version Silverstone/Black with light grey and black contrast seams. In both cases, the coupe’s individual character is underlined by doorsill trims boasting the “M6 Competition” logo.

The coupe’s high performance oriented profile is additionally enhanced by modifications to the suspension. Revised tuning of springs, dampers and stabilisers, lowering of the suspension by 12 mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear in conjunction with M forged alloy wheels featuring a double spoke design and a special combination of tyres, result in noticeably optimised lateral and longitudinal dynamics. Management of the suspension systems, the EDC Electronic Damper Control, the track and camber values as well as the characteristic map of the variable M differential lock have been perfectly adapted to match the suspension modifications.

Oww bad news...
That stunning car will be sorely missed. A fantastic engine, really, allied with a marvellous chassis... An incredible machine.

 to BMW's M magicians for having created such a beast.

It's interesting to compare against the E class AMG numbers for the same period. Maybe it will give the answer why BMW is changing its philosophy for the next M5

Yea, would be cool 2 see Merc W211 E class E63 AMG Numbers, i wont be surprises if its half as many M5. i do know that the E63 touring sold more than the M5 TOURING.

I salute to the general. The E60 M5 has truly been a pivotal car for the car industry, more so then the E39 M5. What it did was raise the profile of the transmission which today can be even more central to a car's performance then the engine itself. The Veyron and facelifted 997TT are grand examples of what a ground breaking difference a gearbox with a computeried transmission makes to the acceleration and fuel consumption. Being one of the few family cars in existence with a sequential gearbox, the E60 will go down history as one of the car to own at least once in your life time. An instant classic just like the E46 M3.

A straight up MONSTER..

Will be missed:(

Flawed but yet brilliant car. Was the benchmark for the segment once again.

Damn right. And the new one willof course set the rules for the next 5 years when it arrives.

But it's not the end of the V10 yet, because I don't think the M6 will be taken out of production just yet....

Changing what philosophy? You mean the turbo charged engine vs the NA engine? Because otherwise there is no change. And I can also assure you, going turbocharched has absolutely nothing to do with Mercedes Benz :)

The gear box (or so I hope), the chassis and the throttle response (assumed they don't ax KERS).

The chassis must be a killer in order for it to emulate sportyness in the huge and heavy car, agreed. Engine response? It would be great but, I seriously doubt this turbo V8 will be more responsive than the V10. The grearbox is something I have no opinion about... yet.

I don't get it, is that post up there alluding to the W211 AMG's outselling the E60 M5, year for year? I find that hard to believe for some reason, as it seems the W211 E55 was the hot seller for the AMG variants of that body type, and only competed against the M5 for one year, until the E63 came out.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of the quirky and old-trend (Trend-SETTING to be fair, but still too gimmicky of a style, which looks horribly dated now IMO) E60, but ALWAYS loved the M5 of that body. I don't know why, but I think the overall outstandingness of that car just allowed the flaws to be a part of how exotic I saw it. I always said I liked the W211 AMG's better, but the M5 was more exotic, interesting, and exciting to me.

The F10 M5 will top it in every respect no doubt, but what it will miss is that V10, which really added to the E60 M5's soul, and exoticness.

BMW is supposed to feature a hybrid boost system in the F10 M5. Nothing tops the response of an e-motor, so - still assuming BMW will actually use that tech - the system throttle response should be amazing. Comparing the engines alone, you're definitely right.

As to the gearbox, I'm still hoping for DCT. :eusa_pray

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
