Recent cars with the greatest character.

Yeah, while I like all the cars you guys are posting, I'm just not sure if they all have real character - the Phantom for example, you guys know how much I like it, and it does have some character no doubt about it. I just wonder if it's boldness, size, and audacity, give it a commanding pressence more than real character.

To me, character is something unique, something expressive and special about that particular car. The Phantom is very special and exclusive etc., and I really love it, but it still lacks a certain feeling of authenticity about it somehow. The Bentley Arnage, on the other hand, is the real deal.

I just love this man's work.

Quality post, Roberto - I appreciate how much thought and passion you put into making sense of your automotive world.

Thank you very much Martinbo, I appreciate that very much and may I say the feeling is very mutual :usa7uh:

Why dont you two go and buy a wedding ring :D It's really cute. I'm starting to cry here :)

Hmmmm, as tempting as that sounds Just_me, I just don't think I'm ready for the commitment, and I'm almost certain that Martinbo is already taken sadly.

Jealousy makes you nasty. :D Don't worry Just_me, you're still my favourite bey.... whoa! Let's not go down that road again. I'd hate to ruin a perfectly brilliant thread.

Right, back on topic...

I got real close to one of these yesterday and for me it's just the berries when it comes to character. Yes, its ugly. Yes, it has more protuberances than a warthog. Yes, it has an aerofoil bigger than the wing of a light plane.

But I don't care because this car's road presence is simply massive:

Just_me, kudos for posting the pics of my favourite 7er, the exceptionally distinctive pre-facelift E65 7er. That car has such an intriguing combination of form in its entirety and detail elements in isolation. I love the "grumpy grandpa" droopy eyes and the smooth, simple contours of the lower front valance.

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo and RR Sport have bags of character too imo.

Saw my first M6 yesterday, in black. It has presence, sure, but it lacks the character of the M5.

And laugh all you will but this car (and I drove it for the first time on Friday) just exudes unashamed, unapologetic, in-your-face character, oh, and it goes like stink too:

It's an old car, I know, but I just can't get enough of this car - it exudes character like you wouldn't believe. The French seem to have an uncanny skill in designing cars which are so passionate and just full of personality and character.

I also love the Ferrari 275 GTB/4 - again, not really recent, but still a fabulous looking car; exclusive, charismatic and just plain beautiful. Just it's huge long bonnet, through to the thin A-Pillars onto those beautifully sculpted rear guards. Fabulous.

Oh sheesh - what a shot. :icondrool :crying6cc

Skyline - just about brings me to tears, sniff sniff. Take nothing away from the mighty RS6 but in this shot the GT-R looks diabolical and much more purposeful.

Skyline in above pic looks million times better than the RS6. Together with Supra, definitely my favorite "far east" car.

:t-cheers:

Hmm, I can't help thinking the next GTR will be a bit soulless. IMO, it's hard to judge whether brand new, on sale cars have character, because they're sort of exciting just for their newness. I'm almost tempted to think the latest M5 has performance and power, but almost not character.. but hey, I'm not a masochist :D I guess it just has a different sort of character to what I prefer. Still, I also think the CLS doesn't have character. Striking design, but not character.

I second that Roberto (but count me out of the wedding!). It's more than just great performance, or good looks. It's more than rareness or exclusivity. It's something special, something that makes the car outstanding. Not just 'more than its peers', but something different.

I second the Delta Integrale and the Skyline GTR; I liked the R32 the best, actually. The shape is a killer. Otherwise.. it's a little bit older, but the Ferrari 288 GTO? Homologation car for the road. Porsche 959, to go with the F40. McLaren F1 - I was never such a fan, but its infamy brings it a modicum of character, not to mention its performance. I think the Z8 and the Clio V6 have character, too.
