Pre-eCoty 2010 - the contenders?

Martinbo, I think you're on to something. I was thinking of the GT-R, just like Guibo, but that, of course, was available through grey import.

On the other hand, I don't think they would exclude the MP12-4D-F45-G6 McLaren if they got their hands on one for the test.

I have a couple of cars for the shortlist:

Aston Martin V8 420
Audi RS5
Audi R8 V10
BMW M3 GTS
BMW M3 Competition
Citroën DS3
Ferrari 458
Ferrari 599 GTO
Ford Focus RS500
Lexus LF-A
Macca MP4-12C
Mercedes E63
Mercedes SLS
Porsche GT3 RS
Porsche GT2 RS
Porsche Boxter Spyder
Renaut Megane RS 250

I have a feeling it will be one of the bold ones.

The new Evora S should be in there as well. Considering how highly praised the normal Evora was, expect the S to be the giant-killer in this year's incarnation.

I think it should be there if the crew can get their hands on one.

Not Evo, but here is AutoExpress's PCOY test group:

All right guys, got the issue today.

Here are the contenders:

Audi R8 V10 Spyder
Ferrari 458 Italia
Ford Focus RS500
Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4
Lexus LFA
Lotus Evora S
Mercedes SLS
Nissan GT-R
Porsche 911 GT2 RS
Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Now, let the guessing begin. :D

Do I have to guess or would that spoil the surprise, not that it will that big of a surprise to anyone. ;)

BTW, no surprise to me that a convertible R8 was rated 3 places higher than the Lambo.

...or, that is not the ranking :D Did I miss something?

This should be some read! I'll log off until I've got my issue.

No, final placement put the R8 three places infront of the LP570.

Porsche did rather well ;), as usual.

GT3 RS winner is my guess... but don't keep us waiting too long for the results, PLEEAASE !

Sounds about right. One of the Porsche "RS" cars probably wins, Ferrari is probably in the top 3, LFA in the top 5. Seriously, there are no losers among that lineup, they're all just different shades of awesome.

^ I think this was the order of the winners and losers.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Ferrari 458 Italia
Porsche 911 GT2 RS
Lexus LFA
Audi R8 V10 Spyder
Lotus Evora S
Mercedes SLS
Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4
Nissan GT-R
Ford Focus RS500

The results

The list is the following:
1. Porsche GT3 RS : 96.3 (6 top votes out of 10)
2. Ferrari 458 : 95.6 (4 top votes out of 10)
3. Porsche GT2 RS : 93.8
4. Lexus LFA : 92.5
5. Mercedes SLS : 91.5
6. Audi R8 V10 Spyder : 90.9
7. Lotus Evora S : 90.5
8. Nissan GTR : 90 (MY 2011, so the new one)
9. Lamborghini Gallardo LP570 : 88.5
9. Ford Focus RS500 : 88.5

Didn't go through the full 40 pages but here is a very quick a summary of the conclusion (reverse order):
9. Gallardo is old school versus the 458.
9. Ford focus is a very good car, with good traction and pleasant to drive, but cannot bear the comparison vs all the other cars which are in a different league.
8. Still as potent as before but it lacks the novelty effect. Suspensions are still an issue, lacking feedback. The new GT-R is not a revolution and if you didn't like the previous one, this is not going to change.
7. Dynamics is top level (steering, ride, handling) but quality is disappointing.
6. Nothing new, always the same review for R8: easy driving, everyday usability, top-performance. Good conversion into convertible.
5. Divided the opinions (some high scores, some low ones, not a lot of average). Everyone loved the engine, most reviewers hated the transmission (worse than some auto, not at the expected level for a DCT).
4. Very special car which shows passion. Extraordinary V10 engine comparable to the CGT's. Tough ride.
3. Less satisfying that a GT3 RS, but could have been a winner on another year.
2. Astonishing car, from the cockpit to the drivetrain and the handling. Less involving than the GT3 RS.
1. Best driver's car...

As a Porsche-fanboy I have to say: Italia over the GT3 RS. :D Anytime.
:t-cheers:

If I had only a limited period of time with and never owned then I would have to agree, the 458 would probably set the hairs on the back of my neck more than the GT3 RS.

P.S.
It's fine and dandy discussing and debating these things but imagine actually being in the position to have to decide which to own. Now that would be wonderful. :t-cheers:

Evo (SPOILER): COTY-458 Italia, Lexus LFA, 570-4, '12 R35.2 GTR, GT3 RS, GT2 RS, SLS

Winner I found out was GT3 RS and runner up was 458 Italia.

Anyone has scan for this one yet? Also, why no 599 GTO??

New evo Issue 152. Picking 2010's performance car of the year | evo

^ I can tell you why no 599 GTO: Ferrari.

They didn't want two Ferraris in 2010 eCoty as then one would have to end up a "loser". Ferrari claimed that they had no availability of press units. EVO then offered to source a customer-owned GTO at which point Ferrari said that they would pull the press car. So confident were Ferrari that the 458 Italia would win... Now this seems to have backfired on them in two ways:
1. By going up against two of the greatest Porsches in many years, Ferrari's chances were significantly diminished.
2. As a result of their rather public spat with EVO (first the uncondoned 458 vs GT3 RS comparo, next the similarly unapproved GTO vs GT2 RS article and then the jilting over the GTO) Ferrari's PR image has taken a knock.

Seems like one can only test a Ferrari on Ferrari's terms alone. I guess it's why they pitch up with a whole truckload of technicians and equipment before anyone can begin a road or track test. It's borderline anal...

Porsche on the other hand - well they just dish out a car (a stripped out one with no Satnav or aircon) and another one while they're at it. The best car won and it deserved to do so.

I'm not disappointed with the result - certainly not - though I was hoping that this would be the 458 Italia's year. Close. Oh so very very close.

By the way, I don't have the issue here with me now but there is a double page spread photo of the GT2 RS and GT3 RS in synchronised oversteer at Cadwell Park in the wet. It's trucking femendous! What an epic shot really.

What's new? :t-hands: Ferrari have always play thing to their favour for as long as I remember. They cheat in Formula One with team orders to receive nothing but a slap on the back of the hand.

They are the divas of the motoring world, always have and always will be.

Porsche on the other hand - well they just dish out a car (a stripped out one with no Satnav or aircon) and another one while they're at it. The best car won and it deserved to do so.

That shows faith in their products, something that Ferrari seem to be lacking. :D
