Porsche Panamera Turbo vs. Mercedes S560 Coupe

Hey everyone,

I want to replace my A8 with a comfortable but exciting car at 80-90k euro.

The best options are Porsche Panamera Turbo and Mercedes S560 Coupe (S63 is over the budget).

How does the Panamera compare to S Coupe on NVH level?

Porsche might get more road noise from its fat tires, all come with 20-21 inch wheels. The new 3 chamber air suspension has great reviews on how it combines comfort and sportiness. I might look for one with PCCB's, I've heard that ride is slightly improved.

S560 Coupe is definitely more comfortable but less exciting to drive, still people are amazed buy the way it drives. Suspension tech is older but still one of the best air suspensions.
I think the frameless windows might get more wind noise at high speeds.

While both are same size, the Porsche looks like a bigger car, the S Coupe hides its size better.

The depreciation on both will be similar over 3-4 years of ownership when I'm moving to electric.

I'm leaning towards Panamera, it seems to be a great all rounder.

What are your thoughts?

Tough call,I guess I'd take the extra performance coming from the Pana. If you're looking for something more exciting that is. Good luck on your choice, you'll love either one at the end I'm sure.

I have seat time in both. The S560 is a rolling isolation chamber in comparison. The ride is floatier, the car is less interested in taking corners, the seating position is much higher, and serenity is the priority. The Panamera fits the "athlete in a suit" phrase. Taut and covered in fine materials. That being said, the Panamera can come off as being clinical in its competency.

I respect the Panamera but don't love it.

2 very different cars. I owned a Panamera e hybrid. It is one hell of a car it’s the jack of all trades.
The s class is on its way out while the panamera has a good 4 years left on its life.

drive them both and wait until the new S is out before you buy this, and wait until the FL of the panamera is out before you by it.

Should help you offset the loss a bit.

my vote goes for the panamera. it is comfortable enough and the most sporty car in this category. You just get more.

Very tough choice and totally different cars. The Panamera is more practical as it probably has more space the the S560 in the back seat and a hatch with folding seat backs if I am correct. It’s a more sportier car to drive but for comfort and low noise levels the Mercedes is king. 68db at 160kmh compared to 72db for a Panamera for sound measuring. The S560 coupe apparently is even quieter than the saloon. Panamera Turbo will kill the S560 on ultimate performance, 3,8sec to 100kmh vs 4,6sec but even the Merc is more than fast enough.

if I was buying I would go for the S560 it’s a more classier and stylish car and will be a worth a lot more in years to come as I would reckon it doesn’t sell as much as the Panamera

Panamera 4 e-Hybrid perhaps ?

Used, is expensive like Turbo so I don't see the advantage, just lower running costs.

Let me know where to buy one at 80-90k euro :))

Is the S Coupe better soundproofed or has thicker windows...? Porsche also has acoustic glass and I'll be looking for that. I guess the Turbo engine is pretty quiet in normal mode.

I don't mind a supple ride but I hate road/wind noise, my AMG GT makes me nervous everytime I drive it on long trips.

I'm trying to understand why the Panamera is louder. I think its because of 20/21 inch tires and maybe the engine is more noisy. Most S Classes come equipped with 18/19 inch tires.

Coupes are low volume cars in general but I don't think it will hold value well. The S500 is selling for 60-70k. Indeed it looks good and the interior design is a piece of art.

Its hard to find a place to rent the S560 Coupe, I can rent the Panamera GTS from Porsche Drive in Stuttgart, its same engine so I will get the idea of how it feels.

Waiting is a good idea but I'd like to get it this summer for few road trips before winter comes.

Yeah, it seems it offers more for same price.

I think @sako has both, maybe he will post some thoughts.

They're both quiet, but I found the Mercedes to have less tire noise and slightly less noise. I'll note the Panamera Turbo I drove had aggressive summer tires which contributed to the tire noise.

Tire pressure and wheel size plays a significant role in road noise and comfort. I remember the first day I collected the AMG GT from the dealer the ride was horrible because the tire pressure was way too high, 3 something kpa. When I reduced it to recommended 2.1 the ride quality improved a lot.

Hi, forgive me, it won't let me send a message yet. I saw your post on another forum - did you ever upgrade the Panamera 971 sound system? I am looking to do almost the same thing and was wondering if you ever went thru with it, if so how were the results? Thanks

Hey, I replaced the subwoofer with a RF P3SD4-8 wired at 2 ohms, central dash speaker with 971035415C and tweeters 971035412 from Burmester. The overall sound improved especially the bass. For Burmester level sound the Bose amp must be replaced together with mid tone speakers from doors.
