911 (997) Porsche 997 GT2 Official Thread

The Porsche 997 is the sixth generation of the Porsche 911 sports car manufactured and sold by Porsche. Production: July 2004–2013. It was succeeded by the Porsche 911 (991).
i want to eat that steering..looks like a doughnut..haha:D

You are making me very hungry... almost 4 am here, time for some early breakfast

Sweet! Thanks Monster, but I can't say that I'm a fan of what they've done with the exhaust treatment, etc.

Personally, I'd rather have the '04 996 GT2.

Yeah i prefer the 996 GT2's exhaust and rear bumper treatment, but i am sure this new design is for aerodynamic reasons. Judging from the photos i have seen so far, the bottom of the engine compartment is completely covered with some sort of tray to reduce air turbulence around that area. Because of the tray the exhaust tip location cannot be the same as the one in the 996 GT2, and since the hot air cannot excape from the bottom of the car, the engineers have put extra vents along the bottom edge of the rear bumper to allow the hot air to escape in a controlled way.

At first I hated the design of the lower bumper and though it was fake camo but eventually I warmed up to it. It's not superb but looks alright to me:
Though I have to admit that I don't like how it look in the shots posted by monster.

Thanks for the information, Monster. :usa7uh:

Yeah, I'm not feeling it.. Frankly, there are far too many styling aspects which bother me. I'm not shocked or surprised though, because let's face it, Porsche has been running this car around the roads with next to nothing in terms of camo

I'd rather own a 2004 996 GT2!

No doubt though, this new GT2 will kick ass.

No problem mate :D The new GT2 will definitely kick ass but it will also bite the driver's ass. All that power+2WD+rear bias weight distribution = very fun for skill driver, not much fun for average drivers.

Absolutely. That's why the GT2 is called the 'The Window Maker' in the States :D

I slightly agree with you guys about the front and exhaust placement. However, I think Porsche went all out for performance with this car and that every little piece of beauty that has been sacrifised has been gained in performance. And seriously, I think Porsche will have the top 2 spots on Sportauto's supertest ranking. And all the benefits of these changes outweigh the negatives, I'm simply in love with this car! Just as I thought I would be.

hmm i just noticed they changed the front abit..they added that black plastic lip down there.. wich i dont like..plus some plastic bars in the grill
i liked it this way.. as on spy shots.. it looks more raw

Here's the test from Autocar on the car:

These are the first official pictures of the new Porsche 911 GT2, the fastest and most powerful 911 ever built for the road.

Autocar can bring you them first (see the full selection in our gallery) after brochure shots leaked out from Porsche USA over night.

Porsche GB consented to release these shots late on Friday afternoon, with any media release schedule they might have set having gone up in smoke. The best of them can be found in our wallpapers section so, if you like the look of Stuttgart’s hottest ever 911, you can decorate your desktop with it.

Porsche GB also confirmed a few other details for us when it delivered our shots; the GT2 will go on sale in the UK in November 2007, but it’ll cost a little more than we’d anticipated: try £131,070.

That sets up the Porsche 911 GT2 perfectly for a meeting with a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera and Ferrari's forthcoming F430 Challenge Stradale, early in 2008, on the pages of Autocar magazine. And our palms are already sweating at the prospect.

Here's another picture of the car:

Earlier today the web was abuzz with leaked pictures of Porsche’s hottest car of the year. An American brochure was doing the rounds with all the juicy details of the hardcore GT2 revealed.

Porsche responded to the leak and released the first official details and pictures weeks early, revealed here for the first time. Read on for comprehensive coverage of Porsche’s ‘widow-maker’.

The headline grabbing figures are 0-60 in 3.6 seconds, 100 in 7.4 and a top speed of 204mph. That betters the Turbo by a few tenths on both counts and 11mph at the top end.

Weight, or rather lack of it. At 1440kg it is 145kg less than the Turbo, and only 45kg more than the lightweight GT3. As well as the lack of a front propshaft, a glass-reinforced plastic engine cover, titanium exhaust system and standard Porsche Carbon Composite Brakes (PCCB) complete the diet. The brakes alone are 50 percent lighter than equally-sized steel discs.

Headline figures are 530bhp at 6500rpm (50 ponies), while the 505lb ft is 45lb ft stronger, and available from 2200-4500rpm. Enough said really.

Oh yes, and helped by Porsche’s new launch control system. Hold down the clutch and accelerator, wait until the twin turbos reach 13psi of boost, step off the clutch smartly and the ECU will sort out the rest. The engine management system makes sure there’s no turbo-lag, no wheelspin, just relentless acceleration.

With a tried and tested 3.6-litre boxer engine and a few interesting tweaks. There’s VTG (Variable Turbine Geometry) as first seen on the Turbo. The turbines move to eliminate turbo lag at low revs, whilst adapting again to provide big power at high revs.

This is all helped by the 'ram effect' created by the air intakes in the new fixed rear wing, which has an integrated lip spoiler. Combined with the full bodykit, including a GT3-style air outlet ahead of the bonnet, it creates positive downforce front and rear.

Not quite, for this Porsche gets traction control and stability control for the first time. Luckily, with Porsche Stability Management (PSM) you can turn off both, and once they’re off, they’re off until you turn them back on.

However, the car also comes with PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) so you can switch between ‘Normal’ for everyday driving, and ‘Sport’ for some track action.

The 911 GT2 is pretty much the same as the GT3 inside, apart from assorted logos. The Chrono Package Plus is optional and lets you time your laps, and there is a new shift light indicator integrated into the rev counter. But this is no sop to economy, but rather designed to make sure you have optimum acceleration.

Porsche has confirmed the price and on sale date: £131,070 and November 2007. Luckily that price includes a Porsche driving course, so perhaps the GT2 will no longer have the nickname 'the widow-maker'.

Based on the production mules we have seen rolling on the roads the latest weeks I find the Official shots to be very weak.

The car looks a little less flattering in the real life shots.

So, is the GT2 going to be a hard core Turbo basically? Where does that place the GT3? Sorry I know very little about the GTs in Porsche's lineup. :eusa_doh:

Yap, the GT2 is always the hardcore, lighter and more powerful version of the Turbo.
The GT3 is the hardcore, lighter and more powerful version of the Carrera S
:t-cheers:

Can you say...freaking monster!! However, I prefer elements of the Carrera S, like the chrome quad rear exhaust pipes....

3.6 factory 0-60 time with the 6-Speed....insane.

Me too. The only thing I don't like on the GT2 are the small exhaust tips. They look kinda silly. The GT2 would look so hot with quad exhaust tips.
