I absolutely love it! ... The rear looks too Audi-esque though, but that can be easily fixed. Stunning!

Man why do you feel you need to stand up for BMW in every possible thread??? This thread is about Porsche technology and performance, not a comparison between Porsche and others. So please try to let this fanboyism out of such threads, we have enough of that already all over the forum. Thanks! :usa7uh:

:eusa_doh:

Sure!

;)

Design wise it´s definetly not my favourite car, but looks great, even whe I see some resemblance on the rear with the latest Audi designs. I wonder what the final engine will be like.

This blew me outta my chair.

For all the reading/skimming I've done, I still don't understand what's up with the plastic-covered wheels. What's the deal?

I am pretty sure they are there to reduce the air turbulence caused by the wheels when they are rotating.

This car is incredible. Not only does it have performance that are out of this world, but the design is stunning. Evolving from Carrera GT but still so new, dynamic and sporty. I am so pleased with this design direction, implementation of lines from some earlier models combined with new technology and shape! Real masterpiece!

Couldn't agree with you more......however I would like to say fanboyism is great and makes these forums so interesting and helps fuel the conversation, but once in a while we are privileged enough to witness something so amazing that we have to just stand back in admiration and let go of our prejudices as a mark of respect. This is one of those times......

That's what came to my mind as well. I've seen similar designs on racing cars to reduce drag. With that in mind however, how will this affect brake temperatures, especially on a performance car of this caliber?

From a marketing standpoint, was it such a smart idea to showcase this concept just a week after the official press release of the new Cayenne ? This completely overshadows the Cayenne which by itself would be a tad tricky to notice that it is a new model since it draws a lot of design from the first generation Cayenne.

:t-hands:

Overall though, this is one big bold message from Porsche. Using 'green-tech' on what will (hopefully) be the car that sits at the top of their performance line-up totem pole. Now that Porsche is under VW's umbrella, I can't imagine the level of resources and know-how that they'll have access to (regarding R&D as well as production).
Others like Ferrari will be doing this soon: :1zhelp:

It sure has shades of Audi at the rear, but much more Ford GT, Lotus and Porsche GT1/Carrera GT.

Some guy at rennteam mentioned the following:

it's not a concept.

My dealer told me today that he received this morning the info from Porsche Switzerland that the car will be produced in August 2010

"Thanks to the modularity of the engineering concept, hybridization can quickly filter down to the 911 and the Boxster, if required. Better still, all the R&D work was done in-house—and that includes the performance electronics and the electric motors. There was not a single systems supplier involved in the gestation process. As a result, we own all the intellectual property rights.”

"The body style is not yet cast in stone. Although the show car is a Spyder, generating a coupe version would be simple.”

That explains why no one saw the car coming, and there wasn't even a single hint leading up to the photo release yesterday. It's clear that the car was conceived by the higher powers of Martin Winterkorn, Christian Dau, Michael Macht and the ex-CEO of Porsche Wendelin Wiedeking. They all probably hudled up together somewhere in the Bermuda triangle, and with the help of unicorns developed this car, guarded by snow white Sabertooth tigers.

It wouldn't surprise me if Ferdinard Piech was kept out in the cold given that he joined Porsche AG supervisory board just shortly after VAG bought into PAG -- after all, he's got his own baby to raise, the Veyron. A car like the 918 Concept is not build overnight, especially when it isn't made out of clay. Development time is easily 2-3 years and it looks very market ready except for the futuristic cameras. Although they specs are astounding, they are not out of line for 2010-2012. It's plausable that it will be brought to market in the near future. This car is real as Scarlett Johansson's rack and lips.

This definitely looks more than a simple design study, obviously a lot of of R&D and thought has gone into the 918 both aesthetically and technically.

The count down timer also suggests Porsche are gearing us for something special.

I also think the 918 concept is highlighting what we can expect in the evolution of Porsche design language, so I would also look to expect some of these new design elements filtering down to cars such as the Boxster & Cayman.

In an era when we are seeing angular design permeating into most designs, Porsche seem to going for more muscular curved surfaces.

I can definitely see Bruce Wayne driving a black 918 in the next Batman movie.

Do you think this kind of enigne is suitable for these days?. BTW, the don´t say the combined power of the enigne, is it really 718 hp?.

With the combined output of 718hp like you pointed out, the 918 makes the Veyron look stupid with it's W16 engine. Porsche has presented the super car of the next 5 years. Although some are excited about the electric SLS I can assure you that if the car will be loaded with a passanger and a few items in the boot, the battery will drain very fast. The outcome will be an electricty bill that is inline with what a SLS 63AMG owner would spend on petrol.

Currently we are in a transition between petrol/diesel and electric powered car, and we need solutions designed specifically for that -- an interim phase. Porsche have combined the best of both world. They are showing that downsizing engines doesn't equal loss of exhilaration. 3.4L doesn't sound like much but with the addition of an electric motor less can certainly be more.

Owner of the car will love switching to full e-drive when they want to have little presence on the road and sneak by places silently. Like when leaving the house in the morning without waking up the neighbours.
