Porsche 918 Spyder Concept

Porsche makes money on Cayennes, Panameras and soon, Macans in order to make cars like the 918 Spyder possible if not profitable.

They do squeeze a lot more out of the options list, for instance, a floor mat on any P-car = extra charge :bag: and anything related to performance (Brakes, Exhaust, Power Upgrade...) gets you into the 4-5 digits

To be lighter than concept

A future Porsche 918 Spyder owner says the combined output of the powertrain will grow to 875 bhp (652 kW).
A TeamSpeed member (who also ordered the McLaren P1 and LaFerrari) says the combined output will rise from 795 bhp (593 kW) to 875 bhp (652 kW). This will be possible by uprating the V8 4.6-liter engine and we assume by tweaking the pair of electric motors.
He says the production version will look different than the concepts / pre-production models and most importantly, the car will be lighter than originally expected. The same source mentions it will be able to run the Nürburgring in less than seven minutes and drive on electric power for 150 km (93 miles).
Just like the 911 GT3, the new Porsche 918 Spyder will benefit from a four-wheel steering system, along with a targa top unlike its two competitors which have a fixed roof. Another member of the forum says Porsche will lose money with every 918 Spyder built and at the moment half of the cars have already been sold.
The production model will be reportedly shown in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Some things are not right here. First it is a Ferrarichat user and not a teampseed user. the guy on teampeed has quoted the user from F-Chat. Second the car can travel >25 km on electric alone and not 150, the guy has done a typo, but websites copy and past.
great news nonetheless.[/quote]

that is good news and hopefully it's proves to be true.

At least now we know it's going towards a good cause... :P

Here's Porsche:

Enzo replacement expected Powertrain: The long backlight stretches over a hybridized V-12 that should produce a system output of more than 900 hp.

McLaren P1

Combined power output is 916 PS (903 hp). As important as absolute power is the electric motor’s ability to provide instant torque, making the powertrain superbly responsive. It is also amazingly efficient. The best driver’s car in the world must also have exceptional straight-line performance and instant throttle response.

LaFerrari

It has a total of 963 horsepower- equivalent to 10 Ford Fiestas
The company said that LaFerrari, which made its world debut at today’s Geneva International Motor Show, is the fastest car in Maranello’s history and ‘the first hybrid in Ferrari history.’

At least now we know it's going towards a good cause... :p
I just exchanged emails with the project manager of the 918 program and asked him about the numbers that McLaren and Ferrari just published, 900hp+, Ring in under 7, etc. His response was: "We're not worried, the 918 is far from finished." So I believe everything that the teamspeed article reported. Porsche will most likely have the last word since the 918's final release is still 6 months away and they now know exactly what they're up against. They'll adjust/upgrade accordingly. We'll just have to wait :D

918 Project Manager: "Fast, throw out the hybrid crap and swap the engine. Put back that V10, otherwise we won't be able to beat Ferrari and McLaren."

Levi, while I feel you on having a pure ICE in the car, with ever-increasingly strict CO2 emission regs, it just is not going to happen.

Of all the sports car companies out there, including Ferrari, I have absolute faith in Porsche. They know what they are doing.

I'm not surspised: 11 years ago CGT and SLR prototypes were annunced @ 558ps and 580ps... after the Enzo, they were upgraded ( 612 and 626 ps)

Porsche previews 918 Spyder to customers

Stuttgart manufacturer shows off hybrid V8 hypercar at Bahrain racing event ahead of official launch in September
A batch of Porsche 918 Spyders have been caught testing at the Bahrain grand prix track. It is believed the cars were being demonstrated to prospective customers ahead of the 918's launch later this year.

Spotted by an Autocar reader at a recent sportscar racing event at the track, four 918s were at Bahrain; two pre-production cars and two development mules. Potential buyers, who have signalled their interest in the car to Porsche, were offered test drive laps around the F1 circuit in the 795bhp hypercars.

Though recently overshadowed by the debuts of the McLaren P1 and LaFerrari, Porsche is confident its hybrid contender will be a match for its rivals. The car has already posted a 7min 14sec lap time around the Nürburgring Nordschleife and its CO2 emissions of 70g/km are unprecedented in this high-performance class.

When it goes on sale, Porsche will offer customers a choice of two 918 Spyder variants; the standard car, at £682,000, or a version equipped with the Weissach Package. The latter removes 35kg from the kerb weight (taking it down to 1665kg) through the removal of the stereo, air-con and leather seats, and also uses lighter wheels.

Deliveries of the Porsche 918 Spyder are scheduled to begin on 18 September.

Now, the projected further weight loss and power gain that's somewhat a response to the P1 and LaF, will that only apply to those cars outfitted w/ the Weissach package or both?

[That may be a question you may want to ask your buddy...perhaps...maybe......:D ]

Sounds fantastic and with the exhaust so close to the ears, it is probably going to be the best sounding of the lot.
